Tuesday, August 11, 1931

Today we washed, ironed, patched.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up all day, working in there garden & pulling weeds.  It is awful cool today, cold wind.  Papa went over to Mengs this afternoon & got his horses, & started plowing the chicken yard.  There was a man here trying to sell burglar alarms to prevent the chickens, cause so much stealing has been carried on in Monroe Co.

Monday, August 10, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this morn – they where here for lunch, dinner, lunch & supper.  We threshed this afternoon.  Leona & kids came up to, we had them all for lunch.  We threshed 91½ bus. wheat & Henry threshed 658 bus. oats.  We got altogether, 218 from Henry, 43 bus. Pabst, & 17 from Armstutz.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner today.  Tonight is a dance at the Gun & Rod Club House.  Joe Watchel was here this evening.  We had a nice shower rain this eve, so that puts threshing off for a while.

Saturday, August 8, 1931

Papa was over at Meng’s by the threshing machine this morning, then he went out to Henry.  Bertille did the scrubbing for Aunt Mary today.  Henry & family & Mrs. Geodelle & Raymond, Dick Lanert, where out here threshing, had them for lunch & supper.  Mr. Geodelle came out in the evening.  After we had everything cleaned up we all of us went out to Mrs. Hy. Ronerberg’s birthday party, beer & cake where there refreshments served.  The people came there & left all the time. The Porter Bro. House & Henry Kammler gave a dance in the hall, but they say it is bum there.

Friday, August 7, 1931

Papa went to Waterloo to get he watch fixed.  Leona & the kids where here.  Steve Freund from Ohio was here & gave us a call this afternoon.  He is selling papers to help the young boys who are getting there free education to become priests.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up this afternoon, we baked a cake for Mrs. Roneberg’s birthday tomorrow.  Henry came up this afternoon & this evening to see about threshing.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for lunch.

Thursday, August 6, 1931

Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s & got a load of wheat & took it to Freeburg.  Bertille was at Aunt Mary’s all day for lunch, dinner & lunch, they brought her home, & had supper here.

Wednesday, August 5, 1931

Henry & the boy’s was here & brought some coal up for threshing.  Wheat is 37¢ bus. now.  We all went out & cleaned the cemetery, & from there we went up to Henry’s to find out about threshing, Henry & Pap went over & seen Geo. Schilling.

Tuesday, August 4, 1931

Papa is picking the potatoes through.  Today is wash day, but it ain’t so very nice yet.  It rained again last night, so threshing is stopped for awhile.  Alsa Eckert was here, she wanted to know if we wanted some plums or peaches, the little peaches they sell for 50 bu. & the big ones next week for $1 bu., we didn’t order any yet.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up again this afternoon.  Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s, & then came home & fixed fence.  Uncle Fred went up to the priest & paid pew rent.

Monday, August 3, 1931

We all drove to Belleville this morning & sold some sp. chickens for 20¢ & eggs for 20¢.  Adam Eckert’s are moving out today.  Yesterday was Smithton Homecoming & Singer fest in Millstadt but I guess the rain spoiled it all.  Ed Pabst was here & brought our oats up, 43 bus.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here for supper this evening, they came from Eckert up here.  We had spring chicken supper.  We got 1 can of pickles now.

Sunday, August 2, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner & lunch.  They & Bertille went to see Adam Eckert place where he is going to move tomorrow.  It is a old place, the house looks awful.  George Lorberg has a little girl born this morning Georgia Lee.  This evening Rosalia & Bertille went up town when we heard the crash, George Lorberg’s truck with Edwin Wacthel driving as he was going to turn in his place, a car came & crash it went, the man was Busche from Red Bud, no one was hurt only cars damaged, they had to pull them in with a wrecking car.  Lorberg has full coverage insurance.  Edwin has no chaffeuer license & was drunk as could be.  Mr. Martin May was here this afternoon.
