Wednesday, April 20, 1932

Papa & Rosalia finished strawing potatoes this morn. We got 10 hens & incubator hatching, 130 chickens we have, from them, we set 13 hens now again, & got 5 more hatching these days. Katie Klotz was here & asked if she could get cistern water from Aunt Mary’s, she got 2 milk cans, for washing & cooking soap. This evening we went out to Henry’s took the plow out, she planted out 30 tomatoe [sic] plants. The old Hepp building in being torn down here in town. Mamie Mueth got operated on this morn. for appendix at Red Bud.

Tuesday, April 19, 1932

Today is town election, Steve Rennecker, Ed Neff, Monike, are the judges. Ted Eichenseer & Phil Braun running opposition for town clerk. Ted received it by 6 votes. There where 99 votes cast. Rosalia & Bertille went out to help Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, paint the floor in the big room around the edge & polish furniture. We had lunch, dinner & lunch. This evening they came up & got some enamel. George Wagner was here wanted to borrow setting hens, but we have none. A man here begged for something to eat, & one wanted money, his legs where gone, came here in a car, last year he was here too. Joe Watchel boy has pneumonia pretty bad.

Monday, April 18, 1932

We washed, nice day & Christ Buehler was here, this morning, he came to get his shovel, & looked at the colts. Papa went down to see Jos. Gregson but couldn’t make no trade. This afternoon he went out to Henry’s then to Buehler’s. We washed windows & put the screens on this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here awhile this eve, they came from Waterloo, stopped by Henry’s, then came here, they bought a rug for the big room & paint for outside around the rug 12 x 15. They where invited out to Jonny Krehers for birthday party but didn’t go. we didn’t have not invitation. Jonny Wuertz was here & looked at our colts.

We went to Red Bud, it rained last night & this morn, makes things grow now. The Red Bud Social Club are giving a play this evening. Mamie & Angela & Pete where here a little while this afternoon, papa went up town. Hy. Armstutz & Steve Rennecker was also here. They got a teacher from Burskville [sic- Burksville] to teach the 2 weeks out, she is Wm. Susenwind’s wife sister, she gets $50 for 2 weeks. Mrs. Rennecker is boarding her, she has her car in Uncle Fred’s shed. This evening we walked up to corner & listed to the musci [sic] awhile, Harry Kammler gave a dance, Smithon [sic- Smithton] orchestra. It was a nice crowd there. McCarthy was in town got his books & clothes & also went to the dance. Egg man from Red Bud got 20 doz. eggs from us for 9¢.

Saturday, April 16, 1932

Papa got crushing done this morn. this afternoon him & Bertille went to Wm. Sheets sale, but didn’t buy anything. Greg. McCarthy the Hecker school teacher quite [sic – quit] his term here, & received his full pay, the directors where going to fire him, school was supposed to be out Apr. 29, but now I guess it’ out already. Wm. Harbaugh’s boy is in Red Bud hospital got operated for appendix. He is about 4 yrs. old. It was already bust open when he got there.

Papa & Rosalia strecthed [sic] wire fence today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up awhile this evening. John Braun was here & paid papa $1.00 for hog breeding, has 12 pigs.

We shelled corn this morning, then Papa & Rosalia went to Ernst sale between Mondaville & Foster Pond, bought $1.20, sprinkle can, pans, table, rake & hoe. I seen in the paper Frank Geschwinder got 2500 baby chicks from W.C. Heyl Hatchery.

Wednesday, April 13, 1932

It froze hard again last nite, ice. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henrys this afternoon & got a load of wheat took it to Freeburg 49¢. There are a few trucks hauling rock again this afternoon for in front of the church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we all went to Oak Grove, Melching gave a free dance. It was a nice crowd there. Vandereit furnished musci [sic]. The Ladies Aid of Evangical [sic] Church gave a euchre this evening in Kammler Hall. Papa got oil in both cars today. egg 8¢.

It is awful cold again, it froze ice last nite. We washed, ironed. Today is Election, lot people in town today. Roy Stauenfbiel’s children have the grip. Papa went out to see Roy on business. Danneberg & son & Ed Meng was here & looked at the colts, they thought they looked wild, because of the white in eyes.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed in Hecker, all nite & today we sewed dress, they had lunch, dinner & lunch, & supper. Henry was here for lunch, he brought the pig back again. Mr. Danneberg from Red Bud was here to look at the colts. tonite is Euchre in Tiptown.
