It was so cold, 8 above zero. Boy! flowers froze in the room, just terrible; to much of a change; we put the flowers all in the basement. Steve Rennker brought over mail today. Not so many people out, to cold; the wind has gone down.

Went to Red Bud mass. Raining this morning & last nite. Clara Wagner came to see if they could get some water out of Uncle Fred’s cistern, there’s had been turned on, & is black. It sure is a terrible night, raining, sleet & colder.

There is telephone general election this afternoon, we heard, Mrs. Dueker has an application in for the board, & 2 others, but old officers & Liz Boll were reelected. There is a sale at the Public School, old chairs & benches, school desks, piano Wm. Birkner got for $2.25 to make butchering table. Rob Laut got hay. Mr. & Mrs. Steve Rennecker, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Watchel & son & Mr. & Mrs. Rob. Laut & son, were visiting here this evening, the men enjoyed in a solo game & ladies pinochle; what a time. Mrs. Watchel held 1500 trumps in diamonds. Miss Edith Klinckhadt is employed as wash maid at Roy Staufenbiel. All getting along O.K.

Mr. Kelley is being buried this morn., from the home of his daughter Mrs. Hess; he had a stroke. Mr. Hess is also in Red Bud Hospital, was operated on appendix; is pretty bad. Mrs. Getrude Irosi of Chester is getting operated for tumor at the Red Bud hospital this morning, Frank McDermott’s daughter. Johny McDermott is employed at Ill. Security’s Hospital at Chester. Roy Schmidt is sporting a new Ford V8 truck, the paper says. A. H. Breuggmann had a little baby girl; born St. Mary Hospital Thurs. evening Jan. 10. Mr. Ed. Rickert is census taker man in Prarire [sic] Du Long & New Design Precinct. The Waterloo CCC Camps will have all different classes; Nobbe’s Garage is giving free a place to study & work, auto Mechanics, Robinette giving musci [sic] lessons, Jerome Vogt teacher of agriculture & surveyoring. A man around advertising portraits; draw & if you win certain certificate, you can have a picture painted with the cost of $10. Berti drew the right one, but we had nothing done, sent him of, only some scheme work. A lady around selling home made chairs at 50¢ a piece. Rosie & Berti went to Red Bud got sack laying mash from Zipfel. Raining this evening, nasty. Aaron Papfenberg has purchase a car. Eggs are 26¢.
Thursday, Jan. 17, 1935
Fried in bacon. Henry & Leona went to Belleville, Billy [Willis] stayed here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon. We went to Donahue’s to Tipton Parish euchre party, played 10 games, we didn’t receive prizes, had 5 points; not much of a crowd, & no prizes; a quilt was raffled out & was won by Ruth May. Mr. Bill Kelley of Ruma, died will be buried tomorrow morning.
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1935
We washed, ironed; fried in sausage & ribs etc. Rose got a letter from Margaret McDermott, stating that there will be a card party tomorrow nite at Donahue’s, given by Tiptown Parish. George Wagner got doz. eggs @ 24¢. Renneckers boarder is leaving tomorrow for St. Louis, Mr. Smith, he has a higher position with St. Louis Diary [sic – Dairy]. Saymenger of below Red Bud, has his job at the station here now, has been working for last 4 days. The Fire House & City Hall is nearly completed now, except the roofing yet.
Tuesday, Jan. 15, 1935
Henry & Leona & Emil, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary all helped butcher, finished today, killed two made summer sausage; weighed 250 & 215 lb. hogs. It rained a little last night & morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went home this evening. Mrs. William Klotz is on the sick list, & pretty bad. Roy Staufenbiel’s have a baby girl born Sun. Eckert doctor.
Monday, Jan. 14, 1935
Uncle went home. We all went to Belleville got new dresses $2.88. Papa isn’t feeling well. Bought beef for summer sausage 12½¢ lb; 21 lbs; baked pumpkin pies tonight.
Sunday, Jan. 13, 1935
Went to Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed yet, Uncle went home; we had soup dinner, played cards. Went out to Henry’s, this evening played cards, ate cake.
Saturday, Jan. 12, 1935
Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & pap went out to Henry’s, went along to E. St. Louis. Chas. Wagner brought the recipt [sic] of fireman’s dues. We finished our quilt, took out of the frame. They stopped at Whielbacher’s at Columbia bought different things, dress goods, etc. We played 5 hand & 4 pinochle.
