Canned peaches etc. Bill [Klein] stopped in. Pap went to Waterloo this afternoon get corn check. $15.11 – with Henry’s & Feruer. Henry & family & Leo & family were here this eve; eating watermelons.

Sunday, Aug. 20, 1939

Went to mass. Martin Fahey was buried last day, he was in church on holiday 15. died suddenly. Mr. Geo Braun, of Hecker is getting buried this afternoon at Red Bud 1:30. Orville Schmidt & Lorreta Braun were published last time today, wedding Wed. morn. here at 9 o clock mass; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, Henrys family & Gregsons are all invited with special cards, of invitation to Log Cabin Wed eve. that is also Uncle Freds wedding day. Mr Clem Parker & Mamie Eichenseer were published 1st time here morn. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went down Miss. bottoms this afternooon. Rained again little shower. Freeburg have Homecoming.

Saturday, Aug. 19, 1939

Rained this morn. again. Went to Red Bud to Louis Deincks sale Mrs. Chas. Hepp’s father; this afternoon so much to sale & crwod. Percy Starr Auctioneer, we got jugs. 2 – 3 – 5 gal. each. 16 [cents] 35 [cents] things sold pretty good, good prices. Bert [Bertille] went to Cowells & got cigars won at Red Bud pinic [sic], took them to Guker’s & traded for small cigars – they were the 2 for 5 [cents]. $1.10 Henry came this eve. brought potatoes last now, all dug.

Friday, Aug. 18, 1939

Raining this eve. canning again today. Walter Jaeger of Waterloo sold his home, & going to build a house on his mothers lot, on Morrison Ave. The barn & building that burned on Freund place was about $5000 damages, Joe & his wife not being home at the time, happened 10 ‘oclock. Smithton priest Fr. Jansen will be changed next week to Lively Grove & Fr. Kunkil of there will be at Smithton. There will be women on jury this yr. Luella Wiegand Hilda Mertz.

Thursday, Aug. 17, 1939

Went to Leo’s took peaches along for her. she [Rosalia] got 23 qts., not has 46 if they don’t spoil. Pap went to Kleins look at heifers; didn’t buy yet; we had to go home by way of Schoenborn’s, also stoped [sic], seen Mr. Schoenborn who has been paralysed [sic] for couple years; oiling the road. Raining this eve. pretty nice for quite awhile. Mary Schaefer was buried at Hecker cemetery yesterday morn; Aunt to Jac Schaefer where she made her house, old lady.

Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1939

Went to Belleville, sold $6. peaches, tomatoes, potatoes, watermelons, eggs; got 18 [cents] – 2 for 35 [cents]. Wittenauers putting up hay. Peaches & tomatoes are still spoiling canned some more today again. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary pap went to Ruma to church pinic [sic]. Geo. Schilling was taken to St. Louis hospital today, has brain tumor. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went to Ruma to church pinic [ed. note – she wrote this twice]. brought some chicken along home & we had chicken & watermelon. Bill [Klein] came stayed here with Bert [Bertille]; they didn’t win nothing.

Tuesday, Aug. 15, 1939

Went to 6 o clock mass. Cooked catsup. Leo & family came, went to Burksville sale; such crowd. Chas. Mueth got bu. peaches. Leo & family stayed for supper. Bill [Klein] came from work, Bert [Bertille] went along home with him. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were also at sale. Emil was visiting at Henry’s, we took bu. peaches along out for them.

Monday, Aug. 14, 1939

Washed, ironed; canned peaches, tomatoes. Wittenauers plowing & cutting hay today. Mauff was here. Jac Orlet stopped took 1 bu. peaches along. pap picked 4 bus. today. Hy Bruns came brought basket back. We went to Kleins this eve; pap looked at horse & heifers they have for sale.

Sunday, Aug. 13, 1939

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile took some peaches along. Leo & family came for dinner. Bill [Klein] & Emil came this afternoon, had watermelon. The Ladies Aid having pinic [sic] at church hall, we went this eve. pap won cake cover & little dish playing bluey. New Athens band furnished musci [sic], pretty good & had nice crowd, large.

Saturday, Aug. 12, 1939

Raining showers on & off today, some pretty heavy ones; 3 houses were on fire in Waterloo this morn. electric wire, ran from one house to the other. Canning peaches so many fell of [sic] from wind. Pap went along with Emil out to Joe Schillings sale; things that Hess had bought on the other sale; Kettler has moved in there alreadys Hess lives on Uncle Adam’s place now; things went cheap at the sale. Ray Schmierbach & Luella Koerber are getting married in St. Louis today; dance tonite at Turners Hall in Smithton. Everybody welcome. Wagners left this afternoon, for supper. Hillsheim painted Wagners car blue & black; looks pretty good. Plenty rain for Wedding; Koerber boy & Verita Muhrmann & 2 from his side attendants; they had Favres V.8 Demonstrator, & Elmer Schmierbach turned it over, on slab near Smithton, car was damaged, but no one hurt.
