Pap went up to mass of Mary Grossheim funeral, pretty large, pallbearers were Gus Kabureck & son, Fred Neff, Con. Mueth, Jake Schaefer & Henry & one pap didn’t know. Frs. Orlet & Fr. Ratermann assisted Fr. Aydt; Mary wanted that way; Fr. Aydt made a very nice sermon, praised her. she was awful generous towards the parish, she bought & donated The Mother of Perpetual Help Statue. Josie Keller came out bout 11 o’clock had dinner here, called Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary to come up, played cards all afternoon & part of eve. All had supper here, she brought a cake out for A. [Aunt] Marys birthday celebrating it today. Hecker general telephone meeting brought a quite a few people to town this afternoon to elect officers & operator. Lizzie Boll received it again against Geo. Wagner 14 – Rapp 5. Lizzie got 23 votes.
Friday, Jan. 20, 1939
Leo & Rose [Rosalia] Wedding Ann.; but to muddy roads, can’t get there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, he took some wheat to Waterloo, she helped quilt. Pap went to Farmers’ meeting at Kammlers. Henry came on business. Boys got sore eyes, pink eye they call it, school is closed for couple days, most all the children have it. Closed today.
Thursday, Jan. 19, 1939
Cold this morn. 15 [degrees] above. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped here awhile, went out to see Grossheims. Henry brought a cow hide up. butchered one today. Osie Neff was the butcher; he also brought a bone along for soup. Susie sang song for a whole bunch from Floraville & requested by a friend of Hecker. A lot of people that have been vaccinated recently have sore arms. Josie wrote A. [Aunt] Mary a birthday greeting, said she was coming out Sat.
Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1939
Cloudy. Leo & family came down, we had chicken soup dinner; he helped pap fix fence, got 2 sows from here, took them there with Whip.; on trade for heifer from Leo, brought that home here; they did the work while home, had supper here, stayed awhile, quilted this eve. Steve Renneker came, paid for his hog $[unclear] @ $7.75. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to Euchre party, had 8 points got table cloth & Bill had 7 got can pineapple, quite a crowd present, had a dance after, musci [sic] by Jac. Schoenborn. Henry came to get black & [unclear]. Mary Grossheim was found dead in bed this morn. hadn’t been ill at all, will be 62 in May, buried Sat. morn.
Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1939
Leo & family came, he helped pap haul hay in barn; we put in quilt & started quilting; had dinner here. Snowing all afternoon & evening; Pap & Leo went out to Henry’s to get clover seed. Eggs went down 1 [cent] again 15 [cents] again. The boys [Henry’s children] got vaccinated this morning; all are alright.
Monday, Jan. 16, 1939
Pap went to Frank Kleins to see his pigs, he wasn’t at home; Hill came collected telephone dues $1.70. Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed. Steve Renneker came wants our fat hog to butcher; may be tomorrow. Pap stopped in at Leo’s this morn.
Sunday, Jan. 15, 1939
Nice day, little cloudy. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Jake Neff has small pox, put sign up today. We went to see Leo’s this afternoon, has supper there, Marita still has a little cold yet; quite a few people are still being vaccinated all around here. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to St. Louis to Audoritium [sic] to see Hill Billy Show, & it was good, seats were all filled 12, 000 then were so many standing.

Pap went to Red Bud to see Schreiber’s about clover seed; went out to Henry’s & weighed the seed 1400 lbs. in all. Went to Waterloo this afternoon, got seed fixed at the mill, samples to send of [sic – off] to have tested for sale; had to pay 12 [cents] postage.

Snowing this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville. Steve Renneker came got some straw for his chicken house. Eggs 16 [cents] today. Henry & family were up this evening.
Thursday, Jan. 12, 1939
Cloudy again today. We cleaned chicken house; painted chairs for Marita, had piegeon [sic] for supper. The Christmas card I send to Ed. McDermott at Washington D.C. came back unclaimed, it sure is funny it came back. Klotz’s family & Wagner’s family all got vaccinated for small pox.
