Rained last nite. Pap went to barber. We went to Belleville, stopped at Smithton, also at Reisfsneiders farm. Leo & family were also at Belleville, all went to church. A fellow here looking at heifer & horses. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up last eve. for lent service.

Nice day. Bert [Bertille] patched socks etc. Thunder & rain tonite, also hail. Henry brought load corn up, the transfer of Catharine Dunn to Geo. Schilling was in [Waterloo] Times.

Bert [Bertille] went to Henry’s got hog grater. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped here, he went to Waterloo.

Went to Leos had dinner & supper, worked on brooder house, put in a floor. Mr. Orlet was also there. Rose [Rosalia] sewed herself a dress. We set onions out by her. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Red Bud to lent devotion this eve. got button for jubilee of the Bishop in Apr. 25. his 25 jubliee [sic].

Went to Belleville took 2 hogs in 385 lbs. @ $8.05. Washed, ironed, patched; washed sacks. Harms Bros. & stranger hit cars some way in public square here; each had their car tolled in; Chev. down & Harms to Belleville. Aunt Mary & Uncle Fred got card from Manda Reheis, Norman has a radio program every day Station KXOK; send requests to him.

Went out to Henrys butchering, killed 2. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had been here & Red Bud, drove out there for a few mins. to see how they all were. Chester Cowell of Chester accidentally shot his wife, she is in Red Bud hospital little below the heart, went through a purse [? – unclear] & arm, right under heart.

Rained all night. Timber man stopped in again. John Myerscough & wife & daughter Flo, were visiting at Emils & stopped in short while to say Hello to us. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s & Rose [Rosalia] to nite; roads pretty good.
Saturday, March 4, 1939
Leo & Rose [Rosalia] went to Belleville, Marita stayed here; had dinner or lunch when they came back. Raining this afternoon & eve. We now got Pope Pious [sic] XII elected Wed. Cardinal Paccellie [sic – Pacelli]; 61 yrs. old. German band played for Hess girls from Hecker.

Beautiful day. Boys stayed here & Henry & Leona went to Belleville; took clover seed @ 4 [cents] – 3 20 lbs. all had dinner here. Rob. [Robert] got mail. Bert [Bertille] got a cross & 16 more to sell – @ 25 [cents]; ain’t going to sell any.

Pap sewed clover seed. Emil came got bu. [bushel] potatos [sic]. Went to Belleville this afternoon; lot of people in town.
