Shortest day. Winter begins. Went to Waterloo. Bert [Bertille] got permanent at Colonial Beauty Shop $3.00. Pap bought new radio from Bersche, gave $3.00 for our old radio, trade in on push button zenith stub $15.00. We got Christmas cards from Mr & Mrs Geo. Shecan [?] Emil Schilling & Josie Keller. Awful cold to be 20 tonite. Bill [Klein] came got Bert went to Belleville to Lincoln Theatre to see Jones Family in “Busy to Work,” giving a Ford V8 away.

Nice day, little cool. Washed ironed. Fried in sausage, 1 gal. cold packed 5 qts. Feruer brought load corn this afternoon, all of it now 75 bu.
Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1939
Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, cured the meat etc. Wm. Ganley came on business. We went to Belleville shopping; took our eggs along 6 doz. – 28 [cents] did shopping.
Monday, Dec. 18, 1939
We butchered one & 1 for Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary 220 lb. hog @ $5.65. Leo & family came & Bill [Klein] helped all day; all came back this eve. played cards; had supper.
Sunday, Dec. 17, 1939
Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile; Bill [Klein] & Brpicle [? – unclear] of Belleville look at Chev. We went to Burksville to see Williams this afternoon.
Saturday, Dec. 16, 1939
Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down again; this afternoon went to Smithton this afternoon to clean up there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon. Bill [Klein] brought Bert [Bertille] home.
Friday, Dec. 15, 1939
Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down; worked in barn. Wetzler of Maeystown died of rabbit fever & his wife is also sick. Paul McDermott son of Luke McDermott was out hunting Tues. nite, with his brother & cousin Willie & Ed Crook; he got tired stopped & built a fire & must of fell asleep clothing caught fired & was burned so badly & died. Elmer Matzenbacher & Emil Geodell found him called for doctor & took him to hospital.

Marita is still here. They are hauling hay in at home today, so just left her here; coming back tomorrow again. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, cakes, washed windows. Beautiful day was 24 this morn, early. eggs came down awful Mertz paids 19 [cents]. L. Dehn got doz. here yesterday for 19 [cents].

Orlets came, fried in meat & washed, ironed. Pap & Leo made fence. Bill [Klein] came went to see several people came back for supper & Bert [Bertille] went along back with him, stopped at Geo. Cortners, ordered goose for Christmas dinner.

Went to Belleville got 30 [cents] for eggs. Marita stayed here all nite again. Snowed a little this afternoon.
