Went to mass. The Hecker Evangical [sic] church & congregation celebrating the 50th Ann. today, with service 3 times & dinner & supper. everybody welcome. Smithton have firemen pinic [sic] today. Clem Schlotmann have baby; make 2 in the family now. Pap went over to Emil’s this afternoon. Leo Gregson & Vera Schmidt were published 1st time this morn. here. Bill [Klein] came got Bert [Bertille] went to Smithton, Firemen’s pinic [sic], Bill had to take tickets at door; from 7 till 9; nice crowd for dance.

Went to Waterloo this afternoon, sale of Mrs Wild Perry May Auct; not much of a crowd, things went cheap. A. [Aunt] Mary bought wash stand $1.40 & leniloum [sic] for kitchen $2.70. Frankie Englerth & Viola Einwich were married today, wedding dance at Brezzy Hill tonite. Bill [Klein] is invited to go. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came to get stand, we brought along home for them. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came to get Marita, had watermelon.

Hot again today. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies. Seen in Waterloo paper Clarence Voges & Irma Burgdorf were married at Waterloo by Rev. Kaecheim, on Wed. Aug 30 at 4 o clock Mrs. Edwin Reheis his sister & her brother attendants.
Thursday, Sept. 7, 1939
Bill [Klein] came got Bert [Bertille] & Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & Mr. Orlet all went to Belleville St. Marys Church, wedding of Isd. & Phyliss Bugger; bride wore white lace long train & veil & her attendant light pink, nose veil, marched down middle isle & groom & best man from side door, was pretty, attended by friends; had nothing going to go for honeymoon to Chicago. Went to Orlets this eve. took Marita up & brought her along home again. So hot today 92 at 12 ‘o clock; all most as hot as it was all summer.
Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1939
Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she & Bert [Bertille] went to mass wedding of Eichenseer & Parker; bridesmaids Lucinda dressed in plum & Adelle Pour in greenish blue. Mamie all white satin, long trail & veil. Clem & his attendents [sic], Joe Parker & Clarence Parker in dark suits. Joe leading the bride in church, pretty wedding; dance at Daabs tonite. Leo & Rose, Bill [Klein] came, all went. Pap cutting corn these days, prices on things going up. hogs – 9.50 – veal or heifers 12 [cents]. eggs 15 1/2 & 19 [cents]; all on account opear. [? – unclear] in European nation, so many were killed & bombed terrible.

Went to Bellville [sic] with things all sold out; $6.31 all the melons & potatoes. Made peach perserve [sic] & cooking catsup. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he went to Red Bud on business; brought sugar & flour. Leo & family came, going to leave Marita here a few days while they are cutting corn. Sure some awful hot days.

Labor Day. Washed & ironed today. Rosalia’s birthday 28 yrs. old today. Pinics [sic] all over today Columbia, Walsh, Smithton Church pinics [sic] & pinic [sic] at Red Bud. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to Smithton church pinic [sic], didn’t win a thing.
Sunday, Sept. 3, 1939
Cloudy this morn; hot in afternoon. Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Bert [Bertille] went up to Mamies, gave her butter dish, shakers & cream pitcher & sugar bowl, for shower present, has all pretty presents. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] were here for dinner. Went to Waterloo to see parade. Then went to Smithton, Bill had to open at 2 o’clock, Favre went to Grange to pinic [sic], had to work there.

Sure hot this day. Pap got hair cut. Bert [Bertille] baked pumpkin pies & cake, made chicken for tomorrow. Hy. Ferner was here there is meeting all day in school hall here. Tonite is surprize [sic] shower for Mamie Eichenseer at Vic’s. Milsdadt [sic] has homecoming, parade at 6. o clock. German Band played “Beer Barrel Polka,” that A. [Aunt] Mary sent in for Rose [Rosalia], Louis Armstutz, Cletus Buehler, Joe Reheis, Willis Brand, 1 Lung [unclear] for there birthdays in Aug. & Sept. all nephews & nieces. Bill [Klein] came, went to Milsdadt Homecoming to see parade.

Awful hot. Bill [Klein] is starting in today, with Sq. Deal Motor Co. at Smithton, going in business for himself. Favre is going to open a shop at Freeburg. A customer of Bellville [sic] stopped in, bought 25 [cents] melon. Pap cutting corn. Bert [Bertille] canned 4 qt. tomatoes. Seen in paper Leroy Siefert & Eliz. Buss were married Wed; going to barn dance next Wed. nite at Brezzy Hill. He works in Kroger store in Waterloo. Al. Cleveland won medal $5. for Champion horse shoe pitching at New Hanover last Wed. at Farm Bureau pinic. John Koeinsbmork 70; died at Red Bud hospital will be buried Sat. morn. at Waterloo church & cemetery, manager of Waterloo Mill. We got card from Isd. Orlet, invitation to church wedding Thurs. morn. to Phylis Bugger of Belleville at St. Marys Parish. Went to Leo’s took watermelon along. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry’s family were all there celebrating Rosalia’s birthday.
