Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s, washed ironed etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, fixing screens. Mrs. Al. Geodelle is in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, operated on head 2 hrs. for tumor; they say. We planted tomatoe & cabbage plants. Hy. Armstutz delivered Chickstarteven [? – unclear]; this eve. Eggs 17 [cents] going up now.
Sunday, Feb. 13, 1938
Went to mass. Mrs. Joe Wacthel, Mrs. Clarence Wittenauer & baby girl Doris & Lucinda came last nite awhile. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up all day, dinner & supper; we played 2 games pinochle; there Uncle went to see Mrs. Mike Armstutz who isn’t very good at present; Bert [Bertille] went along with them out to Mueth’s to see them, Josie isn’t so bad the rest are still in hospital, but getting along well so far. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] stopped in, went to Henry’s all day. Beautiful day 74 again. We went over to see Emil – Lester Gregsons family came also. At 9:30 car drove in here, it was Ed. Heap, looked at the pigs.

Rained a little today, & Boy the roads, terrible mess. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary wanted to go to Belleville, got as far as Sphalts’s land, turned around, & went home again, couldn’t make it she said. Pierre Laut came, asked for permission to go hunting on our ground. Geo. Wagner butchering today. Rennecker & Laut helping got it from Hy. Armstutz. Sure warm, but cloudy & south wind. The mail carried Schmidt has been going around the last several days, well all week, so far with the buggy & horses; some trip, & some mud. We got Christmas card from Fr. Joe Orlet Mon. Sun starting to shine.

Patched. Went to Belleville. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up, went to euchre in School hall, given by Altar Sodality. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came brought there mollasses [sic] down to Hy. Armstutz $1 gal. we played pinochle; warmer again today. Euchre in Waterloo tonite.

Went to 6 clock mass, All Souls Day. Went to Waterloo to 9 clock requiem high mass. Elder place was to be sold at court house, but was posponed [sic] on account of some heirs not being mentioned. Phil Mueth has it for sale 80 acres of ground. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up for church. Armstutzs were to see them last nite. Chris Buehler stopped got the hide from Henrys heifer to take to Drosts in St. Louis. Papa went to see Etling by Smithton this afternoon. It is getting colder this evening. Emil got some more furnitures from Querheim.

Canned qt. tomatoes. Pap went to town order laying mash & hog feed brought it down this morn. Received letter from Dupo stating who won there prizes, all of St. Louis, except 1 at Dupo & Highland 2 at Belleville; anyway not us. The wedding pictures of Papenberg & Schmierbach & Armstutz’s are all in paper, all pretty good. John Braun was here; going around trying to get signers for leasing land for oil, quite a few around here have signed up. Pap took 19 bus. wheat to Waterloo got 93¢. top is 95¢. Bert stayed at Henry’s. Seen in paper that Emil Brand gave the Times Editor a paper from 35 yrs. ago; they published the news, some of the items from that paper.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. We had winers [sic – wieners] for dinner. Raining all morning. Today is the wedding of Aaron Papenberg 24 & Mabel Rieso 21 at Smithton Church with attendants. Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Rittmeyer sister of bride & Miss Alma Weber & Vic Papenberg; it is also the 25 Silver Wedding Ann. of Mr. & Mrs. Rieso; a reception to invited relatives & friends will be held at Daabs Clubhouse tonite; we are not invited, going to live in Lizzie Boll’s house, 2 rooms; she got electric put in last week. Today is also the Golden 50 Wedding Ann. of Mr. & Mrs. Mike Armstutz; for only relatives, children & sisters & brothers for supper & rest, nephews & nieces, cousins etc at Maniers Park & hall tonite for a dance & reception. Musci [sic] by Wm. Birkners Orch. & all musicians. Miss Ida Schmierbach of Smithton & many of Fateyeville [sic – Fayetteville] being married at Smithton Tues. morning; dance in eve. at Fateyville [sic – Fayetteville].

Washed, ironed; got watermelons in 15 in basement. Hy. Armstutz here looking for shoats. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came brought truck home this eve. Hecker public school opened today Mrs. Pickett teacher. Bertha Karban is working at Pickett home at present.

Cut in 7 qts kraut. Uncle Fred came, Bert [Bertille] went along to Waterloo, with him. Washed ironed this afternoon; cut tomatoes 1 bu. for catsup. Pap dug all our potatoes. Circus at Waterloo today & nite. Walter Pour was here wanted peaches; didn’t have none right now. Pap went down to see Louis Armstutz about lime dust. Eggs 18½ ¢ now.

Hy. Armstutz came got 18 chickens, sold them to Mertz here, didn’t ship them this time was enough no coop full. Went to Belleville this morn; dentist wasn’t there gone on vacation. Raining this afternoon, real nice, heavy showers. Went to church pinic [sic] this eve; didn’t win nothing. J. [Josie] Keller was out to; lots city people & many priests, large crowd. Evansville band played. Leo & Rose were down to Fr. Orlet & Raternaun. J. Klinkhardt got $20.00. Zeno Birkner $2. crochet bedspread Grover Dashner, Mrs. Chas. Heff $2. quilt Levi Ganley, quilt Levi Gregson, that I know.
