Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville with things eggs 32 [cents]; they left Marita here went home did there work & came back for supper. Bill [Klein] came this eve, played cards. Leo is going to trade his Ford for truck ford V8 from Bill soon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in going to euchre at Waterloo. Bert [Bertille] gave her 25 [cents] to play for her; also one at Broad Hollow Grange.

Leo & family came went to Belleville, sold out pretty much, 2 bacon & liver sausage was left. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here all day. Merz fixed sprouting at there place over there, had dinner & supper here, also did Leo’s. Bert [Bertille] brought doll along for Marita. Freebug has 3 day pinic [sic], starting today, with barbecue.
Monday, Nov. 13, 1939
Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary – Leo & family came butchered 190 lb. hog @ $6.25 was top price, surely going lower. We are going to take it to Belleville tomorrow to sell it. Bert [Bertille] took pc. bacon to Rennekers 20 [cents] lb. Henry brought load corn, boys didn’t go to school today, talking about not going up here anymore. Ben Heyl paid his heifers -3 for $75.00. Beautiful day.

Went to Belleville, sold everything. Eggs 30 [cents]. Had piece bacon & sausage left, turnips also. Leo & family had supper here. Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville with them. A Bruehl man near Belleville close to Ross Filling station killed his daughter & wife last nite, he is in jail; Another man was robbed & killed near a store; on Ill. Street. Wittenauer shocked load corn, took it home, & brought one here also. Papa & Marita went to election; in Firemens Hall; County Election. Schmidt won against Jost for Judge. Altes Co. Commissioner. Bill [Klein] came got Bert [Bertille] took Woody Acker to Belleville; also his girlfriend on business.

Leo & family left Marita here, Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville selling things got 30 [cents] for eggs; brought Mr. Orlet along out with them, had dinner soup here. Favre’s moved yesterday, had farewell party last nite there for them. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up she went to church. had supper here. Halloween tonite, some are going out playing tricks again.

Raining this morn. still warm yet. Pap went to Red Bud paid Fr. Spors $12.00 pew rent, got shoes. etc. Bert [Bertille] cleaned fruit cellar this afternoon. Mrs. Rudy Helfrich nee Otillia [Ottilia] Rheinhardt, was taken to Belleville hospital in ambulance yesterday morn; baby born at home, awful sick after. Bill [Klein] came brought Whip. Mrs. Favre came to get him.

Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville selling. Marita stayed here; had beef soup dinner. Eggs 28 [cents]. Bert [Bertille] varnished kitchen floor this eve. Ted Eichenseer is building double garage, he purchased a 1939 Demonstrator Chev. from Kaiser at New Athens. Hy. Bruns moved his family & household articles last Sun. to Gambach farm, were [sic] he will now start farming, there. Mrs. Fristsche has her house for rent.

Leo & family came Marita stayed here, Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, took potatoes etc in. got 28 [cents] for eggs. had dinner here. Bert [Bertille] cleaned kitchen cupboards & shelves, bought suitcase for Henry’s baby girl. Marita stayed all nite.

Rained last nite & morning. Went to Belleville with 2 hogs; left Whip. by Bill [Klein] to fix he took us home in his truck, & fixed our pump, had dinner here. We got sweet potatoes & turnip ready to take to Belleville tomorrow. Dorothy Pautler – Phil Pautler’s daughter of Evansville & Jerome Harbaugh of Boxtown are being married this morn, dance at Boxtown tonite. Ben Heyl was here looked at heifers. Oll. Englerth & Bill [Klein] came this eve. Bill & Bert [Bertille] & Al. Karban & girl friend went to St. Louis to see Veil Prophet parade, “Gay Nineties” it was beautiful.
Friday, Oct. 6, 1939
Went to Belleville with 2 hogs 435 [lbs] – @ $6.95, & by Herberts near Ross filling station. Christopher, guy living in Douglas passed us & had head on collison with another car, they were bruised a little on head; our fender damaged; other guys car was way in ditch, it was so awful foggy, awful bad driving; they had there car towed in by Dewein’s from Belleville, we could still drive ours. Went to Leo’s. Marita isn’t feeling well, didn’t sleep & has high fever had her at doctors this morn; he says its teeth; was pretty good when we left. Awful warm these days in 80 [degrees] cloudy this eve.
