Nice cool day. Made pepper relish, perserves [sic], cooked catsup, canned peaches. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for pinic [sic], nice isn’t so hot. Bert [Bertille] got Sears order shoes, all O.K.; also got letter from Cowell’s Clo. Store at Red Bud to get $2.50 in trade prize I [Bertille] won at Red Bud Church pinic [sic] on Aug. 2. Surprize [sic]. Pap picked 3 bus. peaches this morn. they are for sale. Leo & family came for pinic [sic]. Bill [Klein] came all went to pinic [sic], sure had crowd for supper. Smithton band furnished musci [sic], prizes were won bycicle [sic] girl from St. Louis; set dishes, Frank Oxener. quilt – Minnie Staufenbiel; ice cream freezer Ray Braun; blanket Jake Klein. Fr. Aydt won something also Jung from Waterloo. A. [Aunt] Mary won quilt playing bluey. Flossie Kammler won 2 quilts

Sunday, Aug. 6, 1939

Went to mass. Pap went over to Emils, Levi Gregson was there also this morn. Cloudy today. Firemens pinic [sic] in Red Bud last nite & today; parade at 1:30 today. Orville Schmidt & Lorreta Braun were published 1st. time at Red Bud & Hecker today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bill [Klein] came, went to Red Bud Firemen’s pinic [sic] & parade at 1:30. Mrs Staufenbiel also went along she went to church. Had supper here had chicken today. Totsch’s have free dance.

Wednesday, Aug. 2, 1939

Billies [Willis] 6 yrs. birthday. Henry was up this morn. Raining this morn. & good shower this afternoon. Church pinics [sic] at Red Bud & Paderborn. We went to Red Bud for supper, Bill [Klein] came down from work at Smithton, & went to Paderborn pinic [sic], didn’t win a thing there. Some of the prizes, set of knives & forks to Ray Neff & quilt to Gert Neff, case beer to Cyril Haudrich, spread, Geo Orlet, gas [? – unclear] to Smithton spread to Jac Schoenborn; flour to Fred Watchels & others.

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had dinner here. Orlets and Bill came this eve.

Cloudy rained again this morn. We sewed, turnip seed last nite. Pap cut lawn. Bill [Klein] came & got Bert [Bertille], went out to Frank Birkner’s cut pickle 2 bu for them to take over to St. Louis this morn, Frank Birkner’s & Frank Kleins threshed this afternoon.

Monday, July 24, 1939

Washed ironed, canned pickles, apples, peaches; made peach preserve. Mauff bought bu. peaches for $1. No threshing today. Hy Wiegand was down by tractor. Pautler oil man delivered 5 gal here for Wittenauers. Awful hot this afternoon. Bill [Klein] came pap went along out to Walter Wittenauers, trying to sell him a tractor, he just bought one on Sat. from Mertz don’t think it works very good; the way they said.

Went to mass. Raining heavy this morn. till about 8 : o clock. Bill [Klein] came, & we went along to, met Leo’s on way he took his car left it stand by Jake’s, we all went to St. Louis to Forest Park & Highlands, also called on Mr & Mrs Geo. & Gusta. Ducen, they are back from their honeymoon trip from World’s Fair. Val & family were gone out to Pinic [sic]. we didn’t see them. came back went to Leo’s, had supper there. We had dinner along we ate before we went around zoo.

Thursday, July 20, 1939

Nice cloudy cool. Went to Waterloo, sold some chances for Red Bud Church Pinic [sic]. Dr. N. B. Pautler 67 died will be buried tomorrow morn; mass & cemetery at Waterloo, was sick for 3 yrs; Bert [Bertille] went down to Wagner’s Funeral Parlor to see him, so many flowers. looks good, 2 sons were there just then. Steve & Ray. Feruer brought sack pullets for chixs down. Bill [Klein] stopped in want to go to St. Louis Sun. to Forest Park.

Raining all day, no threshing, some threshed yesterday afternoon. Parker’s & Frank Birkner’s. Awful lot of wind last nite; several trees limbs broken off. Al. Heyl stopped in, wanting to sell life insurance & fellow here selling magazines. Bill [Klein] came this eve.

Sunday, July 16, 1939

Went to mass. Raining all morning. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Ellis Grove & to Gross Peach Orchard got some peaches, they are related to Bill; we also went to Fort Gage. Ed Brand & wife & Joe Gregson came a little while to say Hello; they were all at Emils today; going to leave for Ab. [Alabama] tomorrow evening, going to Levi again this eve. tomorrow to Heyls Bus. then to Waterloo & home again, drove from Alba. [Alabama] to Waterloo in day 680 mi. trip. Susie Gal of Hills is playing at Floraville tonite.
