Rained this morn. & heavy & little hail, no threshing here today. Bill [Klein] stopped in this morn. We went to Waterloo this afternoon to church & Farm Bureau Office. Barney Kaiser & Joe got Matt Crowe’s place through forclosure [sic]. Went out to Uncle Freds & A. [Aunt] Marys this eve. awhile.

Wednesday, July 12, 1939

Cleaned chicken yard. Went to Paderborn to funeral of Isd. Watchel 23. Gardener Undertaker, nice flowers, large funeral, thresher all quit so long up there. Fr. Weskamp didn’t make no sermon; pall bearers were Bill Klein, Cyril Haudrich, Jonny Mueth, Jerome Haudrich, Sly. Kabureck & Sly Neff. Went to Waterloo got check for wheat allotment $31.20. Feurer farm $6.29 & Henrys $24.91. Bill [Klein] came this evening.

Monday, July 10, 1939

Washed, ironed & patched. Pap went to Red Bud to get lumber for wheat bin. Bill [Klein] came told us that Louis Schoenborn & Isd. Watchel had accident last nite at around 12:30 Isd. driving his Louis V8 – run in ditch & turned it over, & Isd. going through top & was killed & Louis has only few scratches, car is wrecked, happened on oil road between Floraville & Paderborn. Isd. is at Millsdadt [sic] Funeral Home 23 yrs. old. Hy Armstutz was here wanted potatoes, we didn’t have none dug now. Mauff kroger man was here, didn’t need nothing. Some are threshing today, anyway south of here Klotz’s threshing today. Leo & family were down. Emil came over a little while.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Smithton Turner Picnic, afternoon & eve.

Wednesday, July 5, 1939

Went to Leo’s, canned apples, prepared for threshing, so hot today. We took Marita along home; they came this eve. going to thresh tomorrow, have them for dinner. Bill [Klein] came Henry brought wheat money, so far $65.45 for 134 bus. only got for some 48 * 53-45-50-52[cents]. to Waterloo & E. St. Louis; he got about 580 bus. wheat don’t weigh out; & no price. Lewis Kumke was buried at Evansville this morning.

Went to mass. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went out to Henry’s this afternoon. Leo & family were also there & Geodell’s they were combining, doesn’t go so good we had lunch there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were at Leo’s they weren’t at home, so they came here had lunch.

Nice day. cloudy & little rain this afternoon. Ed Helfrich & Leona Horcher are being married at Columbia today, wedding dance at Pautler’s tonite. Wm Braun was here, signing oil leases for another 3 mons $1. Pap signed again. cut lawn, cut in 16 qts. kraut this morn. Pap went to meeting at Kammlers. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] was here this eve. Leo’s they had heavy rain.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Pap went over to Emil’s awhile this afternoon, he is invited to Lesters for ice cream. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s, they are cutting oats today. Sure lot of people working. Krehers & Watchels combining, some working corn; Renneckers lawning. Mrs Bruns working garden. Isn’t seem like Sun. Floraville have fish fry pinic [sic] & dance benefit of there church there. Henry came this eve. going to combine tomorrow, has been started since Sat. afternoon, & also today he said.

Lot cars passing with priests & Bischoff [sic – Bishop] to celebrate 50th Golden Jubilee of Fr. Van Dieft at Praire [sic] Du Rocher today; being 50 yrs. in priesthood. Raining mostly all day. Bill [Klein] stopped in on way going to Belleville. Man here cleaning out wells & cisterns, wanted $3. clean well so we didn’t have it done yet. Cleaned basement & garden. Rita Braun while coming home from work at Vera’s Tavern & riding with another girl, stepped from car while going & was injured face & shoulder was taken to East St. Louis Hospital. German Band played no. for Wagner Twins, he said. Charles & Melvin birthday.

Sunday, June 18, 1939

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Orlets came & Bill [Klein] this afternoon, & we took a drive in V8 to Fort Chartres & Renault, Waterloo home; had nice drive & hot. all had supper here. John Schaefer’s new home, that is going up in Waterloo was boombed [sic] by chimney $200 damage had just gotten roof on same day. Crook boys had accident at Leohr Station but reported getting along well, were taken to hospital.
