Thursday, Jan. 26, 1939

Nice day warm. A. [Aunt] Mary’s birthday 62 yrs. old. We went out this afternoon, had supper. Went with Whip. roads aren’t so nice. Pap went to Larsons by Burksville bought 8 pigs $34.00. Leo & family, Bill [Klein], came this eve; we quilted & played cards. Red Bud church has euchre tonite. Frank Birkners have a baby girl since Tues. also Oliver Quirins a girl Belleville hospital since Jan 21. Billy [Willis] has got pink eye now. Floyd arm is sore.

Thursday, Dec. 15, 1938

Went butchering at Henry’s, so did Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary; was done by 2 o’clock; with sausage & everything. Berniece Wagner got 1 doz. eggs; she is going to have birthday celebration, Sat. afternoon, 11 classmates; her birthday is Monday. So many people have rabbit fever. Chas. Schillings called there girl Rose Mary. Went to Orlets, played cards, had lunch.

Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1938

Nice day, washed ironed. Went to Waterloo, Columbia, Milsdadt [sic – Millstadt] home; out on business. Eggs down to 27 [cents] now. Verniece Rausch have a baby girl since yesterday; also Chas. Schilling & have baby girl. Berniece Wagner was here got basket.

Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1938

All Souls Day. Went to Red Bud had no mass till 8 o clock; went down for 6 was none, so went to Waterloo – high mass. Stopped at Henry’s & Shields. Geo. Schilling going to saw wood tomorrow for us. Shields is also going to help. Went to Leo’s this afternoon he is going to help & Uncle Fred. They are helping down at Chri. Buehlers today, papering I guess. etc. Henry Bruins have a baby girl born Sun. morn. Uncle & Aunt stopped in.

Friday, Sept. 30, 1938

Nice day. Mrs. Lena Zoeller is being buried this afternoon. Mr. Bill Curran have baby boy makes 4 boys & 1 girl to family.

Friday, Sept. 16, 1938

Pap took 11 bus. wheat to Waterloo, got 58 [cents]. brought 50 lbs. flour along. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, cake & biscuits. Nice cool day. Man here wanted old underwear & things. Al Rausch is hauling coal for H.M. Hill this afternoon. Mr & Mrs. Alb. Crook of Poe Station have a baby boy born in Red Bud hospital last week. Mr & Mrs. Joe Schaefer left Wed. for honey moon to Nigera Falls & going to stop at Chicago visit relatives on way back then go housekeeping in there new home, just recently built by Mr. Schaefer near E. St. Louis, he works for New York Railroad Co; at E. St. Louis. Radio is good these nites, & on day time all you hear is war, don’t know yet whats going to be.

Saturday, Sept. 10, 1938

Pap got crushing done. This afternoon it rained, we didn’t go to sale of Mrs. Martin Fritsche’. Mr. Hy Kleber is being buried at Floraville this afternoon; ill for sometime, at hospital had tonsil removed, had poison system. Barber Pinic [sic] at Marissa Farm Bureau Picnic at Country Club today, starting at 10 A. M. Orlando Skaer’s have baby girl, now have 3 boys & 1 girl formerly Lorena Mehrmann.

Friday, Sept. 9, 1938

Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, pumpkin pie & cake this morn. patched. Its hot again yesterday it was 98. Seen in paper that Joe Lengyl of St. Louis, she being Ethel May have a baby boy second boy now, also seen that Mrs. Eugene Fahey is going to teach Oak Grove School this term; she didn’t teach last yr. living in St. Louis. Mr. & Mrs. Otto Stadel nee Miss Norman Geodelle have moved household articles & 8 head horses by train to Waterloo, going to move with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jac Geodelle in Geodelletown, came from South Dakota. Hy Burckardt of Waterloo is going to start the Oak Grove Tavern now. Clifford Stahelheber wrecked his roadster last Sat. nite near Marrissa, hit into another car, he has a scratch on his chin; but now another car driving around already. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came awhile & Emil; It rained a little & thunder.

Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1938

Another hot day, last two days it reached 100 [degrees] at 4 p.m. Wittenauers cutting weeds; here with the mowers. Hy Sauer 88 the old wagon maker died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Chas. Minmaman will be buried this afternoon from Dashner’s funeral parlor, to Hecker Village cemetery. The Dougherty twins were called by James Joseph – Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Haudrich sponsors, & girl Doris Lorretta, a lady of St. Louis & Celeste Haudrich of Paderborn. The German Band played at no. yesterday for Uncle [Fred] & Aunts [Mary] Wed. Anni. Bert [Bertille] send in. Walter Stahl’s Jr. have baby girl born hospital at Belleville about 2 week ago. We cut lawn this eve; then went out to see Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary once.

Wednesday, July 20, 1938

Cleaned chicken house. Pap went to Henry’s, threshing clover seed with combine, he had lunch & dinner. Bert [Bertille] canned 5 1/2 qts. beets & 1 1/2 tomatoe. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, went to see Armstutz’s on a visit. Henry Spalt have another baby boy, July 18. this makes 2 boys in family, born at Belleville hospital. Sieberts called there girl Delores Norma Lena Siebert born July 8; sponsor Norma Siebert; sister of Leslie Siebert.
