Monday, Oct. 26, 1931

It rained a little this morning, a little.  Ralph Etling was here after dinner a while he paid papa $100 Int, still $98 due yet.  He said ain’t much work in St. Louis, he works 3 days week.  Today is Buddy’s birthday he is going to celebrate it Sat. night dance at the brick house.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up brought 2 doz. eggs along.  The egg man came, he got 8 doz. from us & 2 of there’s, pays 25¢.  Henry & the boys where here brought a load of corn up.  He took our kettle along, he is talking about butchering Wed. & peddle out the saussage [sic].  Our egg man say’s he will take 2 lbs.

Thursday, Oct. 22, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up all day, cleaned there garden.  They had chicken soup dinner with us.  Papa shocked the last of our popcorn today.  There where 2 ladies here this afternoon wanted to buy some White Rock hens, but we won’t sell any of ours now.  George Emery when coming home from the dance at Brezzy [sic] hill the other night ran in the ditch by Parker’s, he was sleeping, he smashed his car, the radiator especially.  Henry & family came up this evening after there a dance in Kammler’s Hall, Herzog Orchestra.

Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & then we all went up to George Neff’s funeral, his brother’s & sister’s weren’t all here.  It was a large funeral.  Querheim had the burial.  During the Show week last, they had baby & lady contests.  Bill Fristch’s baby got first prize a ring & Pete Watchel’s second a ring.  The ladies first Lucille Rausch & second Eunice Scheinder both a ring.  Henry & the boy’s where here with the wagon, he brought a sow pig up here.  Papa went down to the Molasses Factory & got the 2 gal. crock, this evening Steve stopped & said he could fill the 4 gals. so papa took it & him down in the car, & brought it back again.  Tonight is a dance at the brick house, the baseball team is giving it.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1931

Leona & the kids where up we washed, all her quilts & ours.  She took a basket green tomatoes & some ripe ones, along home.  They & Bertille went down to the molasses factory, she left at 2 gal. jar there to get filled with foam.  They told us down there about Bug Schaefer getting married & a wedding dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill tonight.  We all went & had a good time, the Melody Club furnished the musci [sic].  They had double bridesmaids, & a crowd, the hall was packed.

Monday, Oct. 19, 1931

They tolled the bell this morn for George Neff, he must off died in the night sometime.  We all went out to Aunt Mary’s was there for dinner, we picked about 8 bus. apples, sack of walnuts & took them along home, they have so many apples this year.  The egg man got 10 doz. eggs 26¢.  This eve. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family all where here, they all, except Leona & the kids, & us two went up to the wake at George Neff’s, he was 57 yrs. old. & was laid out so nice, looks natural, there where quiete [sic] a few there.

Thursday, October 1, 1931

Henry & Leona & the kids where all here all day, for lunch, dinner, lunch & supper, they where sewing wheat.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner.  We had 2 spring chickens.  Uncle Fred & papa went to Waterloo on business to meet Bestmann’s family.  The egg man pays 21¢ today, he also bought a ½ bu. turnips for 30¢.  Aunt Mary, Rosalia, Bertille & the boy’s went down to the molasses factory & watched them cook awhile, we got ½ gallon for ourselves for 5¢, & got Henry a gal. for 10¢, foam.  Rennecker’s got apple picking frolic this eve.

Friday, May 8, 1931

Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to get some lumber to make a pig shoot.  It rained today.  Henry & family came this afternoon, the kids stayed here & they went to Belleville, & bought them new shoes & Bobby a straw hat.  Bertille cleaned the bedroom & hall today.  This evening Rosalia & Bertille went to church.

Sunday, March 29, 1931

Today we received the palms.  They were all up for every mass this morning.  Henry & family & we all ate lunch, they we left for St. Louis.  We stopped in East St. Louis & spoke with Mr. Caldwell.  Then drove on over to the bridge, we ate dinner first then we went to Sigmund Dudenhoeffer’s, there we had lunch.  Jac. Bachle was there & George came too.  He is a Aviator now.  Papa, Henry & Jac. went to over to see Val. Adam, but he was working in the Pretzel factory.  We came home by Waterloo, & then helped Henry do his work first, then came on home.  Bobby was at Aunt Mary’s all day.  This evening they all was up for church & after church we had supper.  Philip Freund was here too.

Tuesday, March 24, 1931

Today is Bobby’s birthday, he is 5 yrs old.  We all went out, this evening.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were there too, but that is all.  Cake & lemonade were served.  Papa is fixing chicken pens for our little chicks, they are hatching today.  Ted Eichenseer’s kid & Pours, Reagans, kids were here & asked for permission to play ball on that piece of ground here by the house.  Papa told them no they couldn’t.  Henry was in Waterloo this afternoon to the doctor, he told him he should go home & go to bed, he had tonsilitis.

Tuesday, March 17, 1931

Today is St. Patrick, there is a euchre in Tiptown tonight.  We are going to saw wood this afternoon up in the woods.  Henry is going to saw it & Uncle Fred, Uncle Joe, & Emil are going to help.  Rosalia & Bertille drove out to Henry’s this morning, we were all out there for dinner.  Aunt Mary was there this afternoon too, she & Bobby went too Uncle Adam’s.  They didn’t get started sawing for wood until about 2:30, before that the pulley broke.  So we will have to finish tomorrow morning.  We have too take dinner out to Henry’s.  Bertille baked a cake this evening.  Bertille went to church this morning, was mass for Aunt Bridget Dunn.
