Went to mass. Fr. Simon had it, sermon after mass for married people only. Seen in paper Leo Cortner is in hospital at Belleville. Eugene Neff was just dismissed, he got hurt, when working with carpenters at remodeling St. Mary’s Church. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up stayed for chicken soup dinner; we played cards this afternoon; got ready to butcher, set kettles & put water in etc. Mr. Klein & Ignatz & Frank Birkner stopped in & took Uncle Fred along this morn. down to Red Bud, to see the straw baler guy, they weren’t pd yet for there bails; but he paid up right away, no trouble.

Raining this eve. Pap went to see J. Hempe, & to Waterloo got egg mash. Wm. Ganley was here on business. Perry May & the hacker guy was here; still didn’t sell our timber yet; they went up in woods & came back here again. J. Keller wrote a letter, putting in an order for sausage & meat, when we butcher next Mon; she is coming out in afternoon.

Went butchering at Henry’s, so did Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary; was done by 2 o’clock; with sausage & everything. Berniece Wagner got 1 doz. eggs; she is going to have birthday celebration, Sat. afternoon, 11 classmates; her birthday is Monday. So many people have rabbit fever. Chas. Schillings called there girl Rose Mary. Went to Orlets, played cards, had lunch.

Nice day. Baked carmel [sic] cookies; patched. Went to Belleville this afternoon. Henry & Billy [Willis] came got things for butchering. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came brought tree up. We received a beautiful calendar for Becker Ins. Agent. Bill [Klein] was here.

Leo’s birthday 29 yrs. old. Went there butchering today, also Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary helped; came home did the feeding. Mr. Watson was here on business about Lunter [? – unclear]. Henry & family came, we went along with them to Orlet’s to birthday; for supper; played cards. Bill [Klein] came there to.

Went to Henry’s butchering 1 hog. Warmer this afternoon again. Mrs. Geo. Kammler is ill at present.
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1938
Nice day. We went to Leo’s help butcher, also Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Mrs. Orlet helped. Vic Papenberg & Bessie Parker getting married 9 o’clock this morn. We went to dance at Daabs Club House, Elmer Parker & Cecelia were best, she wore dark blue dress, Bessie white & veil. Henry butchered today also, & we didn’t know it.

Bert [Bertille] washed ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up fixing chimney, had dinner here, she got beef bone. Pap was out on business this morn. This eve went to Henry’s butchering, started about 4:30 finished 10 o’clock. Geodelle’s were also out, we made sausage etc.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to lent devotion here. Mr. Herman of Columbia was here. Henry came, he wanted to butcher tomorrow, but he isn’t anyway.
Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1938
Sent out butchering at Henry’s, took Emil along, Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary helped to, had lunch & beef soup dinner; made 69 summer saussage [sic]; 1 hog killed. Pretty nice day, wasn’t so very cold; he sold all the beef.
