Bert [Bertille] baked cookies etc. Pap is finishing walks around house. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went to Red Bud, to junk yard & she stop at Chris Buehlers; living out on farm now. Seen in paper that Mueth’s got $5,000 from auto accident that they had by Columbia, while back; they sued the guy that hit them & won, Ed got $2,000 & Phil $2500 & Bertha $200 & Josie $300. Leo & family came this eve, horse is getting along fine. Eggs still 25 [cents].

Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, pumpkin pie & cake this morn. patched. Its hot again yesterday it was 98. Seen in paper that Joe Lengyl of St. Louis, she being Ethel May have a baby boy second boy now, also seen that Mrs. Eugene Fahey is going to teach Oak Grove School this term; she didn’t teach last yr. living in St. Louis. Mr. & Mrs. Otto Stadel nee Miss Norman Geodelle have moved household articles & 8 head horses by train to Waterloo, going to move with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jac Geodelle in Geodelletown, came from South Dakota. Hy Burckardt of Waterloo is going to start the Oak Grove Tavern now. Clifford Stahelheber wrecked his roadster last Sat. nite near Marrissa, hit into another car, he has a scratch on his chin; but now another car driving around already. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came awhile & Emil; It rained a little & thunder.

Went to Smithton to 7 o’clock mass; to see Ed. Heap; went to Leo’s & Rose [Rosalia] from there, had dinner there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came there this afternoon, & Henry & family at night. We went to Con. Myerscough at Ruma, this afternoon; stopped in at Bill Vogts. Hecker baseball club have a dance at Pautler tonite; musci [sic] by Keims Trio. Ben Schilling is in with them. had pretty fair crowd cleared $40.00. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. & Geo. Wagner awhile. Tony Helfrich wrecked his car last nite by Floraville, nearly got in the pond; smashed up.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to see the tornado ruins at Darmstadt & Baldwin it looks awful there to ; church tower stands, rest all down & few houses to; then we came home. A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went to Lent devotion this afternoon. It is so nice today awful warm; Bill Klein, Louis Schoenborn, Isd. Wacthel came we played 5 hand pinochle, had cake, wine. Louis has his car fixed again, Fred Schaefer wrecked it for him last Mon; driving intoxicated.

Radio keeps reporting the news of tornadoes terrible at West end Belleville, Union School, factory, many resenditals [sic – residential]. 9 being dead & 26 injured so far; 3 blocks area; not very far from Township high school; happened about 5 o’clock. Henry & Leona & Billy [Willis] came. Bert [Bertille] went along to Walter Gregsons & looks just terrible nothing left but the house, & not a whole lot of it, porches of [sic – off] etc; but no stock or any one injured, wood sticking 3 ft. in ground across the road from his house, done more damage by downs by Red Bud Vanburen’s, Gueberts; Henry & stayed for dinner. Pap went to Smithton bought 2 pigs from Ed. Heap. $10.00. Eggs 15 [cents] found 98 today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to Waterloo this afternoon, to see Rosie Kaestenier (nee) Mueth she died Mon. eve. from cancer; leaves a boy 11, who stays with Mueth girls in St. Louis; she has divorce from her husband he has remarried again; she is 47, laid out nice, pink dress at Quernheims funeral parlor; till Fri. morn. then to Hecker church & cemetery. Phi & Ed. are just recovering from auto accident, getting along fairly well at present. Quernheims have a funeral tomorrow afternoon to. Jac Rahn, Hy Rahn’s father 85 yrs. old; he is from Valmeyer; has an awful lot of flowers. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came this eve; we had popcorn. Mrs. Orlet is very low.

Valentines Day. Colder. Pap cleaned the radiator in the Chev. this morn; afternoon went in woods. Ed. Heap came got the 3 male hogs $35; Bert [Bertille] took eggs up got 14 [cents] today. They were saying about so many accidents happening, Chas. Minneman is in E. St. Louis hospital, head is crushed, & Ed. Sauer riding with him is in Red Bud, were driving a wagon, horses both dead; wagon in pieces, coming down Hill by Buheries by Red Bud, Carter’s tie hacking truck hit them, another car of the road; crippled a few people, one by Waterloo today.

Raining this morn; for about 1 hr. then after wards, nice sunshine day. Emil was over awhile this morn. We went to mass. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down for dinner & supper. Cleveland’s family were here this evening, playing solo. Bert [Bertille] went to Wagner’s along with them to Floraville Masquerade Ball, Schmidts Merry Makers musci [sic]. Prizes were won 1st group, 4 girls, Norma Etling; Edna Probst, Elvira Kroft, M. Keim. 2nd prize, dressed a best gent. Mrs. Walter Vogel & Erma Fisher lady. 3rd. Ruth Specinger. 4th. Walter Vogel comic n****r, big crowd; case beer attendance prize. Mueth had an accident this afternoon, at Columbia & Milsdadt [sic] road, car all smashed Phil. & Eddy, Phil wife; they say were hurt bad; Josie had scratches to; but they took her home, but the rest are at St. Mary’s hospital, they were on there way to St. Louis to see Rosie, who was operated on is in hospital; Phil had fractured skull & Ed rib broken. Louis Hofmeister of New Athens fell asleep tonite & ran of left side of hard road up the bank by Al. Parker’s on New Athens hard road; he wasn’t hurt, but car was damaged quite a bit; they say $95. to repair it again.

Pap got haircut. Henry stopped in got crushing done. Eggs 16 [cents] now. Henry told us Fr. Freund of Belleville, ran over a man & killed him at Belleville last Thurs. nite; he had to appear at inquest.
Monday, Jan. 17, 1938
Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed. Pap went in woods all day. Cleveland called here, for Emil to the phone, going to fix on there telephone lines today. Levi Gregson came, going to kill the hogs here & take them down in our truck, there was a accident near J. Braun’s this eve; a [unclear] truck & car from St. Louis, had the cop there, & car was taken in the Waterloo road on a wrecker; so far haven’t heard no more of it.

Put chains on Whip. went out butchering at Henry’s started 9 o clock; finished 2:30. everything went alright; Put cinders over the walks this morn. Heard on radio Bill Divian of Waterloo bus driver was arrested for reckless driving about 7 in St. Mary Hospital injured. So many accidents last nite & today, several people injured & some dead; roads terrible.
