Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Rose went to Belleville had dinner here. Mr. Hartman of Red Bud looked at the colt etc. The Puro Product man was here; Wangelein of Belleville was here & bought dairy mare for $30.00, got it this evening. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up again brought yeast along. Koestine’s on Reheis place have a little baby boy. Lester Gregson is being sued for an automobile accident, which happened a good while back. Berti took Mrs. Staufbiel’s pattern back again.

Went to Red Bud; they made $80. clear at the card party Tues. nite. We went out to Uncle Fred’s for dinner & supper. Mr. John & Sam Krehrer, were also there, looked at implements etc. We went to Pautler at Waterloo tonite, free double birthday dance, musci [sic] by Cowboy’s, nice crowd, there was a wedding dance at Dreamland, Mueller & Shewer Jr. It rained nearly all evening. Ed Fahey said Martin May turned his car over last night at Vanburen’s, 5 in the car, went to Waterloo to get Rose, & going home, car came out Vanburens lane, & collision, May’s car is a total wreck, took Martin to the doctor, man from Renault was driving, Rose has scratches & bruised a little; that is the third car he wrecked in a short time. Mr. Robert Probst is having a dance at Manier’s tonite, musci [sic] by Vogel Bros. Adm. 25¢.

Henry & Leona & Rose & Berti went to St. Louis left 6:30, boys stayed here with papa, we got permanent waves, $2.00 apiece, & white shoes, Poetker of Smithon [sic] was here looking for hogs, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stop then went to Waterloo, this morn. Coming home from St. Louis there was an awful delay on the bridge, accident happened; slow traffic.

Went to church, colder again today, made fire in furnace again. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile then went home. Frieda Buehler called, & wanted to know if they were staying in Hecker, so most probably they will be having company today. We ate our first lettuce yesterday, dinner & supper, & today again. Boy! does it taste good. We brought Agnes Krehrer along from Red Bud, she told us that they were invited to Chas. Hepp’s this afternoon. Mildred was giving a surprize [sic] shower for Melba who is to be married to a Liefer in June. There has been 40 hr. Devotion at Waterloo these days, the closing tonite. In Chicago they had snow; yesterday. There was a collision in Hecker, in front of the church, Pete Kaiser & Frank Birkner, being Kaiser’s fault, he turned on to the road when Frank was passing, no one hurt, but cars damaged, Kaiser is going to settle it all, he just has a new V8 Ford, about a week, & now wrecked; Birkner’s fenders were torned [sic] lose, in Probst’s garage now. We went to Waterloo, attended 40 hr. Devotion, the church was filled; about 12 priests present, procession of girl’s & boy’s, priests.

Rose & Berti went out to Uncle Fred’s helped finish & clean up, had dinner there. Papa helped Henry sow oats had dinner out there. We made garden, put out onions etc.; awful warm. Melvin Wagner was over, Chas & Bernice are both sick in bed, with fever & bad cold. Dr. Eckert was there this afternoon & night. Mr. John Armbruster & Lillian had a collision on the Freeburg hard road, she is in hospital, & he is also pretty bad. We went to church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary also were up, went to church.

We washed, quilt. Uncle Fred walked home, did some work, all day. Papa went to barber shop, also went to see Stehfest, about selling his hiefer [sic]. Osie Neff was here, said it was all right to cut the tree down, by his road, so I guess he will. Bertille finished at the dentist & paid him $18.00, Rose $8.00 & B [Bertille] $10.00, rather busy today. Rose got 3 pulled & 1 filled & Berti got 3 filled, of which, killed 2 nerves. A guy from Cairo going to Mo. hit Brun’s car last night, in front of Mrs. Ida Bruns house, Machines were wrecked, but are going to be repaired. Lester & Eugene Bruns in the car were cut about the face, & Chas. Wagner also was hurt in chest; Bruns had 2 wheels on hard road, & this other guy was drunk & found a wiskey [sic] bottle in his car; his car was injured; don’t know yet, who will stand charges. Our line has telephone meeting at Hill’s, Mr. Rennecker & papa went over; Elections of officers, still have the same ones. Clara Wagner & kids, came & then George also after the meeting, we played 5 hand pinochle. The Ladies Aid have quilting in the Evangical [sic] Church these days.
Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1935
Cleaned chicken house. Papa went to Red Bud to see Mr. Bergdorf, to see our heifer. Mr. Streck was here to see it Mon. evening, he offered $22.00. Henry said Fr. Aydt & Ed Parker, where here to see us Mon, we were at Belleville, they came out there thought we were butchering out there, they wouldn’t go in the house. Papa went to Waterloo, this afternoon. Berti went up to the Dentist he couldn’t finish it yet, forgot the filling again. The paper comes with the mail carrier every day, instead in the evening, the news gets old; paper says “Colton R feischneider,” of Belleville was critically injured & in St. Mary’s Hospital, auto mobile accident. We went to Geo. Wagners this evening, played cards, Pap & Rose, & Clara & Bert won 5 games; won every game; some hot playing. It also was Clara’s birthday; cookies, apples, root beer were served. We received a card from the Post office in St. Louis, stating there was a letter there & not enough postage on, required 1½ & so we sent it over, what it is, or where its from, we do not know yet.

Started fire in furnace. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s got wheat for crushing, Mr. & Mrs. Harold Hellmer of Waterloo, are the parents of a 7½ lb. baby girl born last Wed. The Paderborn fighters had a trial at Belleville this morning, the case was settled between themselves, Edwin Neff & Leo & Wiefred Cortner & August Schaefer & Jake Orlet, the Cortners said, they will not go to Paderborn & Neff neithers, he was employed at Evansville now. Edwin Neff struck a boy at Main St. this morning, with the car, the boy wasn’t hurt, & his name was not given.

Papa went down to Buehler’s got crushing done. They didn’t crush in Hecker. Clara Wagner came. Rosalia set her hair for tonite, Edwin’s wife birthday dance at Floraville. Leona brought Berti home, she went to Waterloo. We all went to Waterloo, took lard to Schulmiester 10¢ lb., then went to Columbia bought some things at Weilbacher’s cheap sale; talked to Chas. Kern about farm implements; went to see Jac Mavers, then to Red Bud home, bought liver sausage 17¢ & soup beef 12½¢. Mr. & Mrs. Willie Matzenbacher have a little boy. first born; last week. There was a accident at the creamery station yesterday, the guy that works there & Adolph Rittmeyer, cars were damaged somewhat.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed in Hecker over night, had dinner here. She & Rose went to Mrs. Staufenbiel’s to fit on her dress. This afternoon we all went to Ruma, were thousands of people attended the Mission Rally Father Kaiser of Belleville & Fr. Sheridian of China were the speakers. K.C. Band furnished musci [sic], Benediction was held; also a microphone speaker was had to carry the voice far; the grounds were just crowded with people, & had a wonderful day; refreshment’s were sold on grounds. John Myerscough’s youngest daughter Margaret Mary who is attending school there, took us all through the convent; met several girls in there Celia Krehrer, & Isabel Forness. Jonny Kreher’s boy & a Vogt from near Red Bud had a collision, both cars damaged pretty bad, in front of church this morning being Kreher’s fault. A man stopped took 6 doz. eggs at 22¢. Nights are awful cool.
