Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1939

Cloudy. Leo & family came down, we had chicken soup dinner; he helped pap fix fence, got 2 sows from here, took them there with Whip.; on trade for heifer from Leo, brought that home here; they did the work while home, had supper here, stayed awhile, quilted this eve. Steve Renneker came, paid for his hog $[unclear] @ $7.75. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to Euchre party, had 8 points got table cloth & Bill had 7 got can pineapple, quite a crowd present, had a dance after, musci [sic] by Jac. Schoenborn. Henry came to get black & [unclear]. Mary Grossheim was found dead in bed this morn. hadn’t been ill at all, will be 62 in May, buried Sat. morn.

Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1939

Raining all morning & nite. Emil came paid for eggs . Clara Mueth of St. Louis passed away yesterday morn, will be laid out at Quernheim’s after 6 o clock tonite, till sat. morn at 9:30 mass at Hecker & to cemetery pretty long time. Dudenhoeffer’s here. We went to Waterloo this afternoon got egg mash. Mrs. Fred Miller – Eva’s mother was buried this afternoon there, Evangical [sic] church. Went to Geo. Wagner’s played cards, ladies won against gents. Catholics got euchre tonite, raining quite a bit, after 10 [degrees].

Friday, Dec. 30, 1938

Nice day, cold it was 13 this morn. Leo & family came, we went along with them to Henry’s, played cards, checkers etc. had cookies. Mr. Ed Meng had another stroke & passed out at 4:05 this eve. Meng Undertaker of Freeburg got him this eve. he had 6 strokes & 5 yrs. since he had the stroke he couldn’t talk plain.

Thursday, Dec. 29, 1938

Cloudy this morn., & afterwards a beautiful day, nice sunshine. Went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. This eve. Orlet family came & took us along went out there again, we played cards, had candy, nuts, pop corn etc. The paper says Andrew Mueth 62 yrs. old was buried Tues. morn. with Requiem High Mass in Paderborn, & to cemetery; but he wasn’t going to church so that false report, priest was at house & prayed & also at cemetery; they say. Got our truck license 29510.

Monday, Dec. 26, 1938

Raining nearly all day. Bill [Klein] came & took us along to Leo’s. Henry’s family also went for dinner & supper; played cards, checkers etc. Pap went along home with Henry’s & Bert [Bertille] went along with Bill to there place, for him to do his work, then came home again.

Sunday, Dec. 18, 1938

Went to mass. Fr. Simon had it, sermon after mass for married people only. Seen in paper Leo Cortner is in hospital at Belleville. Eugene Neff was just dismissed, he got hurt, when working with carpenters at remodeling St. Mary’s Church. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up stayed for chicken soup dinner; we played cards this afternoon; got ready to butcher, set kettles & put water in etc. Mr. Klein & Ignatz & Frank Birkner stopped in & took Uncle Fred along this morn. down to Red Bud, to see the straw baler guy, they weren’t pd yet for there bails; but he paid up right away, no trouble.

Saturday, Dec. 17, 1938

Nice day. Fixed tree stand etc. Renneckers called this eve. to come over for a solo game. Lester Gregson Emil & Steve & pap played & Olive & Bertille & Gus & Katie Klotz played 6 hand pinochle, breaking up even. Gregson boys & Klotz’s girls played games. Served were 5 cookies & apples.

Sunday, Dec. 11, 1938

Went to Red Bud 7 o clock. Leo & family came, Marita stayed with pap, & Bert [Bertille] went along with them to Belleville to redication [sic – rededication] of St. Mary’s Parish Blessing by Bishoff [sic] & mass by Frs. Orlet, Kaiser & Hoff; beautiful church & much larger, lot of people at church; had dinner for priests. We came home, had dinner here, pap cooked. Bill [Klein] & Bert went to Henry’s this eve. playing cards; had pie cake etc.

Monday, Dec. 5, 1938

Leo’s birthday 29 yrs. old. Went there butchering today, also Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary helped; came home did the feeding. Mr. Watson was here on business about Lunter [? – unclear]. Henry & family came, we went along with them to Orlet’s to birthday; for supper; played cards. Bill [Klein] came there to.
