Pap got haircut, & got crushing done; took string down to Mike Armstutz, he is shocking corn today. Cloudy today. We baked cake & mince pie; Pap hauled home corn fodder 2 loads. Hy. brought corn 2½ sacks. We washed chev; pap took it to Probsts & got it repaired. Alois Havey was here, pap spoke to him about chimney fixing, he will next Mon. afternoon if the weather is O.K. Bertille got a letter from R. Pautler, everything O.K. for a free birthday dance there on the Nov. 3. Cowboy of Rythm [sic] to play. Hot Dogs. Eggs 27¢. now.

Cleaned house, & painting. Baked bread etc. Uncle Fred came took onions out; then went to Frank Birkner’s threshing, Aunt Mary was helping there. Clara Wagner & kids came & got our yeast; they brought a glass cooked cheese yesterday, sure is good. Papa was helping Vic Eichenseer fixed the pump out at Henry’s took nearly all day well pump was just about done; put everything new on it. R. Schmidt tinner of Waterloo is in Red Bud hospital with pneoumina [sic]. Miss Mathilda Schilling bought new chev. coupe. The carnival at the Country Club started this evening, stunts diving etc, band concert, dance.

Baked bread; painting etc. Cleaned basement. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here from Hy. Birkner’s threshing & had dinner here, he went along with papa in the woods, to see what kind of a job those guys are making in Uncle Matts woods; after dinner they left for Oscar Birkner’s threshing, for supper. The boss of the wood workers came by this afternoon papa went out & showed them where to work in our woods. Uncle Fred’s got his chev. just a year today. Pour’s called babies Leo & Louis.

Saturday, July 13, 1935

Papa went up & got Osie Neff to look at the place, were he wanted him to set the engine for threshing, he then went out to Henry’s; worked the mares, work fine, wagon, corn cultivator etc. had lunch out there. We went to Belleville & home by Millsdadt [sic], Waterloo & Red Bud, to see several parties on business. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, stopped a little while, & went to Praire [sic] Du Rocher to Jennette Ronnenberg’s & Fink wedding dance. We went to a free dance at Oak Grove, & nice crowd, Blossom City Boys playing. Oliver Pour has a new car chev.

Wednesday, June 26, 1935

We painted another little girl. Had spring chicken dinner. It rained all night, this morning yet; can’t cut wheat for awhile now. There was a beautiful float went by, advertising an auction sale to be held at Belleville Sat. & one car to be given away free; the float was shaped like a boat; radio in it, sure was a dandy. Mr. Edgar Prediger oldest boy Cletus was operated for appendix at Belleville, & died yesterday, 7 days since operation, appendix was grown on to liver they say, Jos. Gregson’s neighbor. Rained most terrible this afternoon, just a cloud burst, there was so much water on the road here, splashed all over when the cars went through it; after the rain, kids were all lined up walking in the water in the gutters, also Mrs. Wagners. Papa went over to Rennecker a little while. Henry sends milk to Waterloo New Athens now, Helfrich hauling it, got a new chev. truck & hauls to Athens now. We cleaned basement.

Cloudy this morning. Papa went up to get skim milk. We made out 1 spring [chicken] today; & boy was it good. We went took a drive to Burksville, etc to see some people. Clara Wagner came to get her hair set. Papa took the Chev. to Probst, oil changed; 28144 miles, pump gauge didn’t work.

Strawed potatoes, cleaned chicken house. Papa got the chev. again this afternoon, all fixed up, new oil rings, etc. greased & labor, all $8.00. Omer Schilling is giving a birthday dinner at Paulters Hall to nite, gents 25 ladies free; Moonlight Orch.; playing; we went in, & Boy! was it a crowd. Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon & got his hog check cashed $33.58. Sure some dust, today, it is terrible in Kansas dust storms.

We went out to Henry’s, helped clean house, moved the bed rooms; waxed floors; had lunch & dinner. Rained this afternoon heavy showers; planted out cabbage & tomatoe [sic] plants. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here; papa took Chev. to Probst’s garage, got repaired.

Thursday, April 25, 1935

Papa is fixing fence again, will soon be finished now. The Y.P.L. of Hecker, are giving a play intitled [sic], “Gates to Happiness” tonite at Kammler’s Hall; Adm. 35¢ dancing after play. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, we all went up, but it wasn’t so nice, no pep at all; Characters were: Hy. Spalt, Clarence & Ralph Rausch, Harold Wagner, Floyd Thompson: Carol Papbenberg, Vernice Rausch, Marjorie Rausch, Mrs. Arthur Hepp, Alsace Eckert. The hall was crowded. Irene Reheis, furnished musci [sic]. Rev. Hasto painted the backgrounds, furniture came from N. Athens. Papa took load wheat to Red Bud, 90¢, got sack chic mash. Mrs. Gambach & daughter have a new 1935 model Chev Sedan; today. There were gypsies at J. Kaltwasser’s today, ransacked the place, took coffee & bread.

Monday, April 1, 1935

All Fools Day. We washed, was cloudy, we hung it in the basement, sprayed fruit trees. Paid Int. to F.B. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he went to Waterloo to get oil changed in his Chev; she stayed here, cut Berti striped dress out. Papa set posts this afternoon for his shut, he is making. Eggs are 19¢. Fred Voges of Lords Corner died will be buried Wed. tomorrow afternoon.
