Sunday, March 31, 1935

Went to church, colder again today, made fire in furnace again. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile then went home. Frieda Buehler called, & wanted to know if they were staying in Hecker, so most probably they will be having company today. We ate our first lettuce yesterday, dinner & supper, & today again. Boy! does it taste good. We brought Agnes Krehrer along from Red Bud, she told us that they were invited to Chas. Hepp’s this afternoon. Mildred was giving a surprize [sic] shower for Melba who is to be married to a Liefer in June. There has been 40 hr. Devotion at Waterloo these days, the closing tonite. In Chicago they had snow; yesterday. There was a collision in Hecker, in front of the church, Pete Kaiser & Frank Birkner, being Kaiser’s fault, he turned on to the road when Frank was passing, no one hurt, but cars damaged, Kaiser is going to settle it all, he just has a new V8 Ford, about a week, & now wrecked; Birkner’s fenders were torned [sic] lose, in Probst’s garage now. We went to Waterloo, attended 40 hr. Devotion, the church was filled; about 12 priests present, procession of girl’s & boy’s, priests.

Monday, Feb. 4, 1935

We washed, ironed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went home after breakfast, froze a little. Mrs. Wil Klotz is very ill; eggs today is 26¢. Aunt Mary sent a dress pattern along with Louis Birkner for us; left it at Mertz’s Store. We went to Renneckers this evening, played pinochle, even games. Chas Hill & family left for Chicago for a 3 mo. job; with truck & car. Ed. Mengs butchered today.

Friday, Aug. 10, 1934

Baking bread. Put the new tires on the Whip. Went out to Uncle Fred’s, looked at his implements, that he wants to sell. It sure was hot this afternoon 106 at Eichenseers, in the paper it was that 350 persons died from heat in 24 hrs, the hospitals are all filled up, the water is low all over, especially in Kansas, Chicago; it was 115.

Tuesday, May 22, 1934

There was an awful fire in Chicago at the Stockyards, last Sat. afternoon about $10,000,000 damage the paper says. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, went to Red Bud load wheat & to doctor helped papa, had dinner, lunch, supper. Mertz finished the job, all on, for $87.40 papa paid him. Planted tomatoe [sic] plants, pickles. Wheat 78¢ today. Uncle hauled 2 loads; in his car.

Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1933

We washed. Mr. & Mrs. Ted Eichenseer & Mamie went to visit relatives at Indiana & went to Worlds Fair at Chicago left Sat. morn. Juluis Rausch called & got the package what Horn had sent here. It rained this afternoon & evening, it was nice. Grover Cleveland birthday.

Thursday, Aug. 24, 1933

Papa & Bertille finished the potatoe [sic] patch. John Griffins & Noel Roscow went to attend World’s Fair this week, Stella Roscow attended last week; she surely enjoyed it. There are quite a few people very sick, Chris Buehler, Million Wagner, Arthur Barthel all have summer flu, or thphoid [sic – typhoid] fever. There were 2 men here again, talking about the brewery at Red Bud, where is to be built soon. It is awful warm again.

Friday, July 21, 1933

Seen in the paper quite a few people from Waterloo attended the World’s Fair; at Chicago the past week. Mrs. Wm. Scheider got her divorce last Mon, he has to paid $75 alimony. Mr. Frank Finnerty is going to have a sale July 29, also Julius Stensel, Aug. 19. Ralph Collier had the Whiteside property for sale, just the place, Papenberg live there.

Saturday, June 24, 1933

Papa got crushing done this morn. Osie Neff was telling him that Bruns are all sick but one, got tyhoid [sic – thyphoid] fever. Roy Gregson of Red Bud had his machine stolen. George Schilling is going to start in threshing Mon, if it don’t rain. There is a big street dance in Chester, Ill. tonite. Miss Frances Schilling is taking her habit today & in two years [words crossed out]; Odillo Eichenseer has to take Mr. & Mrs. Joe Schilling there going to leave today. Misses Martha Schilling & Helen Kectriz left yesterday also for Indiana to take in the performance. Fr. Aydt, is going today to, to be there for tomorrow, & then go to the Worlds Fair; George Wagner & family came over this evening. A lady got 5 doz. eggs 8½¢ & selling fruit jars & bonnets.

We canned beans, baked bread & coffee cake. It is awful hot these days. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & Bertille went along to Red Bud with them to the dentist, but he wasn’t home, he is in Chicago at the hospital. Mrs. Munier is selling cabbage already here in town.

Monday, March 21, 1932

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went home this morning, then came back again, he burnt all the rubbish over there & she helped fixed Bertille’s dresses. They had dinner with us. This afternoon about 3 o clock it got right black & blue, windy, it was terrible for awhile, everything blew around, hay stack fell over, buckets, blew a window out of Horn’s house, just nearly like a storm, it didn’t last so very long, but rained, hailed a little, got colder towards evening. In Chicago they had snow storm & thunder & lightening the paper says. Papa went to Waterloo this morning there all day. Vic Eichenseer was here & delivered some feed this morning. Mrs. Eichenseer had to go into Waterloo this afternoon, it is court week. Mr. Hill went along in.
