Pap got haircut. Nice day from top, 19 [degrees] this morn. Went to Smithton to church this afternoon. Berniece got 1 doz. eggs this afternoon. Susie Gal of Hill’s is playing with the Ozark Ridge Runners at Valmeyers tonite for dance & floor show at 10:30. Adm. 30 [cents] per person; Advertised in paper.

Warm, & started raining this eve. windy all day. Bert [Bertille] washed, hung it in basement, ironed baked pies. Young Ladies have card party in hall tonite, its raining. Eggs keep going down every day; 1/2 [cents] now are 14 [cents] here.

Nice day. Ironed, patched, quilted. Mertz delivered 100 lbs. hog pellets. Eggs 14 [cents].
Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1939
Leo & family came, he helped pap haul hay in barn; we put in quilt & started quilting; had dinner here. Snowing all afternoon & evening; Pap & Leo went out to Henry’s to get clover seed. Eggs went down 1 [cent] again 15 [cents] again. The boys [Henry’s children] got vaccinated this morning; all are alright.

Snowing this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville. Steve Renneker came got some straw for his chicken house. Eggs 16 [cents] today. Henry & family were up this evening.
Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1939
Papa went out to Henry’s farming clover seed. Cloudy this afternoon, turned chickens out today & eggs today are 15 [cents] sure dropped within the last week, because of warm weather. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went along to Floraville to card party given by Church members, & what a crowd, never seen nothing like it before all tables filled & all bingo players, we played bingo, got nothing.

Uncle Fred’s butchered 2 hogs here today – 206 & 214 lbs. Henry & family & Leo & family all helped, raining nearly all morning. Emil came over awhile. A. [Aunt] Mary gave him some liver. Marita has a little cold. Eggs sure down 15 [cents].
Saturday, Jan. 7, 1939
Nice day. 51 [degrees] again. Went to Waterloo to funeral of Clara Mueth 44 yrs. old; left Waterloo 9 o clock to Hecker church cemetery, wasn’t very large funeral. The Pallbearers were Ben Schilling, Levi Ganley, Simon Havey, Joe Brauch’s boy & Annis & Teve’s [names unclear] boy friends. Mrs. Manier is getting buried over in St. Louis this morn also at 8:30, she had rabbit fever, took her over to hospital were then she died, so they just left her over, buried her there anyway; was sick quite awhile. Geo. Wagner got 1/2 doz. eggs. @ 20 [cents]. Mcarthy’s – Helen & Gerald are giving a free dance at Oak Grove tonite.

Raining all morning & nite. Emil came paid for eggs . Clara Mueth of St. Louis passed away yesterday morn, will be laid out at Quernheim’s after 6 o clock tonite, till sat. morn at 9:30 mass at Hecker & to cemetery pretty long time. Dudenhoeffer’s here. We went to Waterloo this afternoon got egg mash. Mrs. Fred Miller – Eva’s mother was buried this afternoon there, Evangical [sic] church. Went to Geo. Wagner’s played cards, ladies won against gents. Catholics got euchre tonite, raining quite a bit, after 10 [degrees].
