Another Beautiful day, pap fixing pen for little chixs. Bert [Bertille] baking bread etc. & cleaning. Light bill $1. for 9 hrs.

It is 12 above zero this morning, quite a change. We washed. Rose sewed. Pap took the chev. to Probst had him to look it over, it can stand zero he said. Henry & Leona went to Belleville left Billy [Willis] here, went in about 9:30 came back at 4 o’clock. Pap went to Bolstead bought sow & 5 pigs 4 weeks old for $17.00. Bertille went to Mertz’s store, looked for mail & she won the fruit cake, for 4¢ push the name Belle & that won the cake, some luck, it is 98¢ cake, looks good. We had no street lights for awhile this eve. alright now. Eggs 31¢ now.

Raining all day & cooler. Henry & Leona went to Belleville. Billy stayed here; boys were at school. The town lights were put up today, we had lights all over town tonite, at 5:05, turned on over at New Athens. Mr. Bill Kammler died, yesterday morn, of a cancer & stroke, will be buried tomorrow afternoon at the church & cemetery. Mr. Guker of Red Bud brought Joe Walcthel radio up $42.50 pretty nice, Philio, also brought a $17.00 here, its small Philio, nice an loud, we should keep it for a week, till Sun. morn.

Send a card to Aunt Mary, at St. Louis. We got lights now, all connected & working order, sure nice. Got letter from Aunt Mary; coming home by buss [sic] as far as Belleville, we should meet them there.

Pap went to see Alb. Monicke. Henry Huelsmann’s have a baby boy born Sat. Henry came brought the wagon & load corn fodder, took the mower home. The family came this evening, got the yeast. We had roast beef dinner today. Vic Eichenseer finished our ground wire for light; suppose to hook up tomorrow, they say. Nice rain today.

We washed, ironed. Joe Griffin finished today. Pap got load corn fodder. Mr. & Mrs. Jerome Cortner had Gypsy Joe to play “Red Sails in Sunset” for there baby 1 yr. old today Ethel May. Mildred Watchel & Berneice Wagner was here, she is news reporter for Niece Rausch, for Daily Advocate, neice [sic] is working at Clara’s in New Athens now.

Pap & Rose went out to Henrys to get feed for crushing. Joe came & Vic Eichenseer put in electric ground wire this afternoon. Nights are cool.

Pap got load corn fodder; Then worked on lights. Joe came this afternoon again, & also this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon. Bert Thompson stopped to see Joe on business.
Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1936
Ironed. Rose & Bert went to Waterloo to dentist. Bert got 1 filled by Hotz $2.00. A guy here selling apples $1.25 bu. & ones taking orders for Mitner Product Co. of St. Louis. Joe Griffin came & checked up on light switches etc. We went to Belleville, got everything the fixtures etc. Joe also was in, got it all at Haskel’s Electric Store.
