Went to Orlets, sprayed potatoes had lunch. Bert [Bertille] had to go to Totschs to get arsenate [? – unclear] of lead 4 – 80 [cents]. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. planted corn today. The Ladies Aid got euchre party again tonight – in church hall. Awful warm & no rain, a shower sure would be good. German band played a no. [number] for Henry birthday & Wedd. Ann. last nite at 7:30 & today for Mrs. Hy Birkner & Leo Cortner. Bill [Klein] came this eve. said his Uncle Ignatz died at about 3:30 this afternoon, got out of bed went outside & had stroke.

Went to Red Bud; raining all day & nite an awful wind. Bill [Klein] came, we played cards this evening. Aloys Roth have a baby girl; Fr. Spor’s wasn’t satisfied with the results of the euchre Thurs. nite $42. clear.
Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1939
Cloudy. Leo & family came down, we had chicken soup dinner; he helped pap fix fence, got 2 sows from here, took them there with Whip.; on trade for heifer from Leo, brought that home here; they did the work while home, had supper here, stayed awhile, quilted this eve. Steve Renneker came, paid for his hog $[unclear] @ $7.75. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to Euchre party, had 8 points got table cloth & Bill had 7 got can pineapple, quite a crowd present, had a dance after, musci [sic] by Jac. Schoenborn. Henry came to get black & [unclear]. Mary Grossheim was found dead in bed this morn. hadn’t been ill at all, will be 62 in May, buried Sat. morn.

Leona & Bert [Bertille] went to Red Bud to Raffle’s Beauty Shop. Leona got end permanent for $1.00 & Bert [Bertille] all $1.50 got oil changed in Chev. & gas etc. Fried in gal & 1 qt. port sausage this afternoon. Billy [Willis] stayed here this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon, had to help clean dishes etc. Awful cold radio says will be 18 [degrees] tonite; freezing right along. Went to Paderborn to euchre party, got sauce pan had 9 points out of 12; crowd was small. Schmidts furnished musci [sic] for dance. Boy! did it snow, so bad couldn’t see were [sic] to drive, terrible ground’s all white & weather man predict more snow.

Beautiful day. Pap went up to woods. Rose [Rosalia] came this morn. helped quilt; Leo is butchering at Jake’s. Uncle Fred brought A. [Aunt] Mary up to help quilt this afternoon, he came this eve; had supper. Emil was here awhile. Al. Hoffmann came to see A. [Aunt] Mary. Bert [Bertille] went along home with Rose [Rosalia] with our Whip; went with them to Paderborn euchre, didn’t win nothing had 5 points; they had 5 points; they had a dance, also had been the priest was sick, couldn’t be there.

Went to Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, she went to church & to meeting, for the Thanksgiving Turkey & chicken dinner. Clara Wagner & kids came awhile; John Henkel came for his money for the hay 242 lbs. @ $9.75, highest this week. We went to Waterloo to Hy Roth’s birthday dance. Boy! nice crowd. Schumacher & Carle played. We put sleeper tickets here at the Firemen’s euchre party & dance; pretty nice crowd but mostly all elderley [sic] people. Wm Birkner’s Orch. played; none of us got prizes, we gave bridge set.
Monday, Sept. 30, 1935
We washed, ironed, patched. The Ladies Aid of the Evangical [sic] Church is giving a euchre party at Kammler’s Hall tonite. Werner Kammler is hauling coal in for Geo. Wagner. Al. Eckert had a accident in Belleville Fri. night, fender, & wheel smashed, to the corner to fast & upset on curbing, has the car fixed now. Milton Wagner’s called there little boy Darwin & Geo. Lorbergs called there girl Romona. Rose & Bert went to Waterloo, took papa watch in again & left it there for awhile now; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we went to the euchre, Uncle had 11 & got sauce pan, & Bert had 10 got little rug; not much of a crowd, & no prizes, 7 euchre tables.

Mary Fahey of Red Bud & John Dougherty of Renault were published for the 3rd time, wedding mass to be Tues. morning May 8. & Linus Merz of Red Bud & girl from [blank] were published also 3 rd time. Uncle Fred was by Louis Birkner this morning, who is sick with bad cold, fever & chills. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, then we went to Tiptown to euchre party, Aunt & Bertie didn’t play, the rest did, played 6 games. Rose won 5 got jar honey. 13 tables with euchre & pinochle & bunco & 13 prizes. Oh! some euchre; we stopped at Uncle Adam’s on way home, his birthday 85 yrs. old, they had so much company today, Levi & Joe Gregson’s, Lesters & family J. Myersough of Ruma. Papa asked Emil to help build & Cleveland also. Henry is sick, has fever & stomach trouble, got a tooth pulled Sat.
