Rained nearly all day. Chas Helfrich got load hay. Bill [Klein] came this afternoon. Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville. & this eve. went to Marita’s 1 yr. birthday, nobody else there raining & roads pretty muddy; we planted out tomatoes & sweet potatoe [sic] plants this eve. Cleaned little chick house this morn.

Tuesday, April 4, 1939

Nice day. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, fixed chicken nests. Mrs. Jansen was here again today. Road election all over today & also in E. St. Louis & St. Louis. Leo & family came this eve, got truck, left Marita here all nite, they want to take calf 9 [cents] to Belleville tomorrow. Pap & Leo went to Kammlers hall to oil meeting, but it was 8:15 & nothing doing yet; was suppose to start at 7 o’clock, they didn’t stay. There was an accident at creek between Red Bud & Hecker, ambulance went down.

Washed ironed patched. Pap cleaned barn, beautiful day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, they were by Louis Birkners to get eggs.

Thursday, Feb. 23, 1939

Nice day warmer. Pap cleaned barn. Eggs 15 [cents] now. Nic Hess have baby girl, since yesterday. Mary Schaefer Harrison of Belleville have baby boy.

Monday, Feb. 6, 1939

Cleaned chicken house & barn. Rained last nite, but nice today. The Ladies Aid quilting in church.

Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1939

Papa went out to Henry’s farming clover seed. Cloudy this afternoon, turned chickens out today & eggs today are 15 [cents] sure dropped within the last week, because of warm weather. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went along to Floraville to card party given by Church members, & what a crowd, never seen nothing like it before all tables filled & all bingo players, we played bingo, got nothing.

Went out to Henry’s, helped farm clover seed had dinner there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up here.

Friday, Nov. 4, 1938

Cleaned chicken house, put in straw etc. Rained little this morn, & getting colder, still south wind. Waterloo paper didn’t come today. Emil came over awhile till Clara called up, said he should come down there. Celestine Neff got 1 doz. eggs this eve. No school in Hecker, Mrs. Pickett is sick.

Sawed wood 5 3/4 hrs. Leroy Haudrich had saw Shields & Leo & Uncle Fred helped; they came home for dinner, had chicken, made pumpkin pie this morning.

Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1938

Nice cool morning, after all the rain yesterday. Bert [Bertille] ironed, patched; pap. plowed orchard & harrowed it. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon working across street. Hall’s big animal circus , coming to town tomorrow nite only. Adm. 20 & 10. and elphant [sic] weighing 5000 lbs. big girl jumbo. Henry & family & Leo & family. It is awful cool this eve; with light rain.
