Leo & family left Marita here, Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville selling things got 30 [cents] for eggs; brought Mr. Orlet along out with them, had dinner soup here. Favre’s moved yesterday, had farewell party last nite there for them. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up she went to church. had supper here. Halloween tonite, some are going out playing tricks again.

Raining this morn. still warm yet. Pap went to Red Bud paid Fr. Spors $12.00 pew rent, got shoes. etc. Bert [Bertille] cleaned fruit cellar this afternoon. Mrs. Rudy Helfrich nee Otillia [Ottilia] Rheinhardt, was taken to Belleville hospital in ambulance yesterday morn; baby born at home, awful sick after. Bill [Klein] came brought Whip. Mrs. Favre came to get him.

Cloudy this morn; hot in afternoon. Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Bert [Bertille] went up to Mamies, gave her butter dish, shakers & cream pitcher & sugar bowl, for shower present, has all pretty presents. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] were here for dinner. Went to Waterloo to see parade. Then went to Smithton, Bill had to open at 2 o’clock, Favre went to Grange to pinic [sic], had to work there.

Awful hot. Bill [Klein] is starting in today, with Sq. Deal Motor Co. at Smithton, going in business for himself. Favre is going to open a shop at Freeburg. A customer of Bellville [sic] stopped in, bought 25 [cents] melon. Pap cutting corn. Bert [Bertille] canned 4 qt. tomatoes. Seen in paper Leroy Siefert & Eliz. Buss were married Wed; going to barn dance next Wed. nite at Brezzy Hill. He works in Kroger store in Waterloo. Al. Cleveland won medal $5. for Champion horse shoe pitching at New Hanover last Wed. at Farm Bureau pinic. John Koeinsbmork 70; died at Red Bud hospital will be buried Sat. morn. at Waterloo church & cemetery, manager of Waterloo Mill. We got card from Isd. Orlet, invitation to church wedding Thurs. morn. to Phylis Bugger of Belleville at St. Marys Parish. Went to Leo’s took watermelon along. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry’s family were all there celebrating Rosalia’s birthday.

Went to mass. Leo & family came had dinner here. Columbia has HomeComing today; German Band playing this afternoon & parade at 1 o clock. Bill [Klein] got Bert [Bertille], he has to stay at Favres this afternoon, or till he come home.
Saturday, Aug. 26, 1939
Nice day. Ironed, patched, cleaned, baked grape pie. Henry came got peaches. Mamie came awhile this afternoon, visit me [Bertille] before she gets married & leaves town; which will be in Sept. to Clem Parker. Emil was over. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went along home with him; after work. Favre & family left this afternoon for Hot Springs Ark. till next Tues.
Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1939
Went to Belleville, sold tomatoes, watermelon, eggs, potatoes, had Leo’s grapes along sold some. This afternoon, canned damson plums, grapes, cooked jelly. Went to Leo’s, put in order for 250 lbs. grapes for 2 people. Rained heavy again this eve; we got caught in it; up at Leo’s; rather on way going home. Sold Favres a 30 [cent] melon in Smithton. Rained nearly all nite. Eggs 18 [cents] Belleville.
Saturday, Aug. 12, 1939
Raining showers on & off today, some pretty heavy ones; 3 houses were on fire in Waterloo this morn. electric wire, ran from one house to the other. Canning peaches so many fell of [sic] from wind. Pap went along with Emil out to Joe Schillings sale; things that Hess had bought on the other sale; Kettler has moved in there alreadys Hess lives on Uncle Adam’s place now; things went cheap at the sale. Ray Schmierbach & Luella Koerber are getting married in St. Louis today; dance tonite at Turners Hall in Smithton. Everybody welcome. Wagners left this afternoon, for supper. Hillsheim painted Wagners car blue & black; looks pretty good. Plenty rain for Wedding; Koerber boy & Verita Muhrmann & 2 from his side attendants; they had Favres V.8 Demonstrator, & Elmer Schmierbach turned it over, on slab near Smithton, car was damaged, but no one hurt.

Went to mass. Celebrate feast of Corpus Christi. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile; her & Bert [Bertille] went to Minnie Staufenbiels to get her dress, its all finished now. Leo & family came for dinner, he went to church here. Bill [Klein] came this afternoon, getting his new V.8 Ford this week. coach, greenish gray; from Favre at Smithton. Ed. Helfrich & Leona Horescher were published at Paderborn. The Hecker Ladies Aid have there Cold Supper & pinic [sic] today at church grounds, pretty cool for pinic [sic], having a 4H Club band from around Waterloo. The 4 Happy Ramblers are having a dance at Kammler’s tonite. Awful cool.
