Report came over the phones this morning that Hershel Blackburn was dead, he was lying beside the plow yesterday, kicked by a mule, this morn. is dead. Papa went up town. Mr. John Whiteside had a run away with horses & wagon, & he was drug along under the wagon, his skull is split, & in a poor condition. We went to Belleville this afternoon, Rosalia got a spring coat for $1.95 6¢ sale tax; at Quality Store. We received a card from Creses, saying that she is spending a few day at home, we should come & see her, she is going to Chas. Sensel’s barn dance May 6. It is the paper the marriage of George Whitkamp 33 & Hilda Fritz 22 where married last Sun; afternoon Apr. 30 in the Evangical [sic] church, Mrs. Joe Geodelle & Gus Fritz the attendants.

We planted 4 bus. potatoes this morning. We all went out to Henry’s took the mule along out. Papa & Rosalia took some wheat along into Waterloo. Mr. & Mrs. Rudy Geodelle & Mrs. Fritz & Hilda came out there too. Bill was working there yesterday & today, sewing oats & today is was to wet, so they shocked corn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & her & Rosalia & Bertille went along to church in Hecker & took the pattern along for Levi Gregson’s. Joe & Josie are both in bed, sick with flu.

Josie came up for church this morn, & she came down here & brought papa glasses along, he forgot them last night, Papa is sewing clover seed. It is cloudy & cooler today. Mr. & Mrs. Joe Geodelle nee Fritz have a little baby boy Joe Jr. born Feb. 24 Friday. Mrs. Kreitner of Edison Place obtained a divorce from her husband, lawyer Eugene Kreitner, charge cruelty. The Farm Bureau Office at Waterloo is moved 2 doors west in Ruch’s building, on account lack of space. A transfer of Christian Betsman & wife to Dominic Klein in in the paper. Dr. Werth & A.A. Brandt, where purchasers of new Chev, Coupes. There where 2 fellows here looked at our mules. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie came up for church, we played cards, 2 games.
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1932
We went out to Henry’s butchering today. Uncle Fred & Emil helped; they butchered a 500 lbs. one. Rossevelt [sic – Roosevelt, Franklin] got elected, & all the rest democratic except Ervin Boo he got in, so far. Mrs. Fritz won the turkey given away at Schmidts dry goods store. We had lunch, dinner & supper, out at Henry’s, & brought some fresh saussage [sic] along home. Mr. Jac Neff & Ed Neff came there too, he wants to use the team tomorrow haul wood together. Joe Hilpert is working for Fr. Grooten’s again, he came down here awhile this evening. Henry won basket groceries given by Schmidt’s.

This afternoon we started out for a drive & landed at Fort De Chartres & viewed everything there, we made 48 min. Hilda Fritz was the only one we knew there that we seen. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up for the show this evening. Bill & Creses came too, we all went too the show. Ben Schilling was here this evening then he came there too Creses along with him. The blanket winners to-night were, Levi Gregson again, & Edwin Reheis. Oliver Birkner was the 8 yr. boy that played the violin with the [racial slur omitted], he played 2 tunes, he was to get 50¢ but that he played 2, I think he got $1.00.

Papa and Rosalia went to Waterloo with a load of wheat. Wheat is .75¢ a bu. Bertille stayed at home and cleaned house, baked bread, cake and peach pie. I saw in the Waterloo Times today that Albert Heyl’s have a little boy. Miss Hilda Fritz resigned from Rex’s confectionary & is working at the knitting mill & Miss Edna Geodelle is working at Rex’s now. Archie Weihl got married last Thurs. July 10 in Chicago to Miss Helene L. Swanson. They will return to Waterloo on July 28 to make their home with the groom’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Louis Weihl of Waterloo.
