Nice day. Henry & family came yesterday afternoon boys stayed here & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, got new dress & things. Geo. Walzbacher’s only child girl Mary Elizabeth 4 yrs. old died at St. Marys Hospital brief illness says in paper. Mr. Joe Rieckert celebrated his 98th birthday on July 9. still hole & hearty, still pratices [sic] law yet. Walter Nobbe & Al Hoffmann were here, trying to trade cars again, now he offers $150. for chev. but we won’t trade yet with him, wait longer. Harry Wittenauer came going to thresh oats here by tomorrow.

Cut lawn, washed, ironed. Mr. Walsh extension Magazine seller, we took it from him, now till 1939. took rosary premium, he will be ordained in 2 years, he says, this helps him along. We had nice shower this eve. Hy. brought 100 lbs. growing mash down. Harry Wittenauer was here, we were there by him this eve. to look at his sow & pig; didn’t buy them, to high price.

Thursday, July 7, 1938

We went to Leo’s threshing oats this afternoon – had them for lunch. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary helped to. Henry couldn’t they were helping Dan Geodelle’s for 2 days. Rose picked got 1/2 bu. pickles again today.

Tuesday, July 5, 1938

Leo got threshers about 5 ‘ o clock; had pitchers, & machine guys for supper. Henry & family helped & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had to help at Frank Birkner’s. Henry finished wheat & oats; got 791 bus. & 45 lbs. wheat, our share 263 [and two-thirds] bu. Nic Papenberg hauled 215 bus. ours to Waterloo mill got 60 – 65 & 62. docked some from 3 to 5 [cents] bu. Harry threshed here 684 bu. we got 228 bu. our share; Weigands got tractor & small outfit.

Saturday, July 2, 1938

Uncle Fred & we went to Waterloo, Uncle traded for a new 1938 Chev. Coupe – allowed $550 for his new Chev. Coupe $744. Pap went out to Henry’s combining oats, yesterday & today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went to get there chev. stopped here with it when they came home. Emil was over. New Athens home coming today.

Friday, July 1, 1938

Pap went out to Henry’s. We cut cabbage in. Leo Kern stopped here, went out to Uncle Freds got his wagon. Leo & family came this eve. & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came from Eckerts threshing. Mrs. Martin Zauzek died, buried Mon. morning at Paderborn. Walter Stahl died, was out threshing. Clem Schlotmann coming home from threshing was hit by truck, is in Red Bud hospital in serious condition.

Thursday, June 30, 1938

Pap went to Henrys. Alsace Eckert – living back in Hecker again, moved to Sparta after they were married, have a baby girl now. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Bert [Bertille] took onions out over 1 bu. for sale.

Wednesday, June 29, 1938

Pap went to Henry’s, all day. Wittenauer made hay here. Leona came after sacks this afternoon. Wheat is 65 [cents]. Nearly everybody started threshing today. Geo. Schillings, Nic Hess; Cortners run. Frischkorns. Klotz starts Sat.

Tuesday, June 28, 1938

Pap & Emil went out to Henry’s. Bert [Bertille] washed ironed etc. Emil came over this eve. waiting for telephone call from Henry.

Monday, June 27, 1938

Bert [Bertille] went to Leo’s with truck, he hauled coal Bert helped wash; they & Bert all went out to Henry’s, combining again 126 bus. afternoon. Chas. Helfrich came got oats. Emil & Steve Rennecker came over awhile.
