Pap got haircut. Henry stopped in got crushing done. Eggs 16 [cents] now. Henry told us Fr. Freund of Belleville, ran over a man & killed him at Belleville last Thurs. nite; he had to appear at inquest.

Thursday, Jan. 20, 1938

Raining all day; Pap went to Smithton this morn; Henry came up, he wanted pap to go along to see Ed. Heap at Smithton, he met him up there then. They also went to Corner’s by Paderborn. Pap went to Red Bud this afternoon took sample of clover seed, he bump it for 8 1/2 [cents] lb. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] 1st yr. wedding anniversary today, didn’t get there, roads muddy.

Tuesday, Jan. 18, 1938

Emil & Bert Thompson came after the hogs, 2 – Emil took our truck; they weighed 217 – 239. @ $8.65 top price today. Pap went out in woods this morn; Bert [Bertille] stayed at Henry’s, they finished working on telephone lines this morn; we had dinner there & butchered this afternoon, got home about 4:45. Started in sleeting & raining. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, got a few things from store. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down, we played cards. They brought 15 doz. eggs.

Saturday, Jan. 15, 1938

Pap went in woods, came home for dinner, & went back again this afternoon. A fellow here this morn; wanted some thing to eat. Mrs. Aggie Ratz Doyle was operated for appendix last week at Belleville hospital; & Mrs. Wilbur Heyl was opperated [sic] for appendix also at St. Mary’s Hospital in E. St. Louis. There is a show at Waterloo put on by Nobbe’s, advertising John Deere; implements etc, starting at 9 this morn. serving dinner & movie pictures, etc. Adm. free tickets. Henry & family came this eve. we went along with them to Uncle F. [Fred]

Monday, Jan. 10, 1938

Cloudy all day, we went out to Henry’s butchering, had dinner, finished up about 2 o clock brought load oats along. Went out again for supper; Geoddels also came out, we made gal. ice cream we took the ice & bannanas [sic] along out, played musci [sic]. Ray brought his guitar along. He said Pautlers had big crowd, Neff & Probst’s birthday dance, couple fights he said. Rhenhardts quite [sic – quit] playing musci [sic] now, Ray joined Keim’s Och. now, played first time with them Sat. nite; at Dreamland Palace; have several jobs.

Thursday, Jan. 6, 1938

Fried in bacon & pork sausage. Henry & Leona went to Belleville with a calf left Billy [Willis] here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up after the batteries by Probst’s this evening. We went to Renneker’s, paid up telephone dues, 50 & extra for drop tax; Emil came there & we had pinochle game – 10 games 9 to 1. Mr. Hy. Stahlebeher died, will be buried Sat. afternoon; the bell rang this morn. It is getting awful cold rapidly.

Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938

Butchered 2 hogs, 223 lb. each. Henry, Leona & Billy [Willis], Leo & Rose [Rosalia], Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, all helped. had lunch & dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed for supper, sugar cured meat this eve. Hill was here collecting telephone dues, got meeting at Kammlers tonite, pap didn’t go, electing new officers this eve. for the new year. John Horn is pretty sick; doctor was there this morning. Eggs 23 [cents] hogs $8.40.

Went out butchering at Henry’s had dinner. Oliver Ruhel was here, working on agricultural problems. Nice day.

Friday, Dec. 31, 1937

Cleaned etc. Henry stopped in, got crushing done. Mrs. Geodelle is sick. Bert [Bertille] got mail, New Years Greeting from Helfrich girls, & card from Dupo, having the last raffle, for the church forbid it now, 1st prize quilt 2 $25 – 3 $20 – 4 – $10 – 5 – $5 to be raffled tonite but we got it to late, can’t send it back – $1. they wanted. Seen in Waterloo paper transfer of 105 acres from Emil Brand to Ed. Brand; never heard nothing about it; Received enveplope [sic] from Fr. Spors for Sunday collections 50 [cents] every Sun. it says.

Monday, Dec. 27, 1937

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had breakfast & supper here going to stay over nite again, awful warm out. Went out to Henry’s butchering, had dinner. Boys got piona [sic – piano] accordion from Santa Claus for Christmas. Lena Meng was here to see Uncle Fred. Uncle Fred fixed the pump for Emil, after we came home from butchering. Frank Emery died this morn. 2 oclock is by Wagners. We played cards this eve. pinochle. Lena Meng stopped in on way town.
