Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1939

Becherer & Horcher were married yesterday morn. at Coloumbia [sic]. Rosalia came we stretched curtains today. Went to New Athens this afternoon to dentist. We had chicken soup dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, Bill [Klein] got Leo [Orlet], all came this eve. we repapered spots in kitchen. Henry brought load corn. They had there baby girl christened Joyce Elizabeth yesterday. Mrs. Adolph Klube sponsor. Mr & Mrs. Elmer Haudrich have baby girl born Sun. also.

Tuesday, Oct. 17, 1939

Leo & family came Marita stayed here, Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, took potatoes etc in. got 28 [cents] for eggs. had dinner here. Bert [Bertille] cleaned kitchen cupboards & shelves, bought suitcase for Henry’s baby girl. Marita stayed all nite.

Sunday, Oct. 15, 1939

Went to mass. Henry’s have a baby girl born at 4:30 this morn. Ella Simon is working there. We went out this afternoon, everybody is alright – baby 9 1/2 lbs. black hair. Bill [Klein] came had supper here, we went to Leo’s this eve. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in there to, they were going to Totsch’s to free dance. Sure beautiful day, warm.

Thursday, Oct. 12, 1939

Columbus Day. Pap hauled 2 loads wood down today. Went to Waterloo this afternoon, got mash etc. Bert [Bertille] baked molasses cookies, cooked catsup. Awful cold tonite. Henry wants to finished with wheat today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. he got the broken glass from Emils front door that broke Sun. have another glass put in now.

Sunday, Oct. 8, 1939

Went to Red Bud mass. Emil come over brought paps trousers over, Henry had brought them up, had them cleaned at Waterloo. The front door glass broke over at Emils wind blew door shut; so far isn’t fixed yet. Eichenseers have it here, to large glass. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Smithton.

Thursday, Oct. 5, 1939

Rained a little. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came from Belleville have brought truck back took Marita along home had dinner here, beef roast. Bert [Bertille] dug up flowers this afternoon. Lester Tobin & girl friend were here, he wanted to see heifers & etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve; they were at New Athens pinic [sic] yesterday, won pair pillow cases. Henry brought load corn & Billy [Willis] was also along; brought sample apple butter. Billy took flowers along to plant.

Friday, Sept. 29, 1939

Bert [Bertille] planted some more flower slips & took some up; getting colder this eve; radio says frost, put the flowers in basement. Henry & family came this eve; he is awful dissatisfied with the boys school up here. We got 9 little pigs today, born this morn; now have 25 hogs.

Saturday, Sept. 23, 1939

Nice day. Pap went out to Henry’s got few sacks of rye; took tomatoes along out for catsup. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, we all went to Manier’s sale at Griffins; brought good price, Huber Auct., & quite crowd, we bought nothing. A. [Aunt] Mary got buffet for 65 [cents] other things. 3 pc Davenette set $4.25 Chris Buehler bought. Helleshein, lot things & victrola for $1.25. Piano. Hugo Probst. $8. for Firemen’s. Ralph Ettling came on business this eve. pd. Int. $100. on note.

Monday, Sept. 18, 1939

Went to Belleville with things didn’t do so good, couldn’t sell everything, got 23 [cents] doz. for eggs. had potatoes & apples along for Orlets; couldn’t sell it all. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Henry came got apples & tomatoes. Went to Orlet’s pap operated on pigs. Leo plowing. Bert [Bertille] cut lawn this eve. nice cool weather now; if it stays.

Friday, Sept. 15, 1939

Hot again. Went to Henrys, took a load of wheat to Waterloo – 18 bus. got 67 [cents]. Top price is 82 [cents] today. Wheat is getting hot again, took load of ours from here off got 73 [cents] & took another load from out there 67 [cents]. Henry & family, Leo & family & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were all here this eve – eating watermelon had 40 lb. melon; & it was sure good.
