Thursday, Nov. 17, 1938

Geo. Wagner’s butchering today came to get there hog, Hy Armstutz truck, & also J. Kammler, weighed 280 lbs. Got the check from Strecks, one weighed 305 lbs. & 7.40 & 340 lbs. .07. Pap went out on trip this afternoon, took scales back out to Henry’s, he is going to kill a beef this evening. Went to Herman Kettler’s this morn. bought mare from him for $10.00; pap walked home & Bert [Bertille] went to Orlets awhile. Ms. Crocker came got 2 bus. potatoes 50 [cents] bu. Raining this eve.

Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1938

Beautiful weather. Pap went out looking for pigs. Hy. Armstutz brought the rest of corn, maybe bus. or so. Went out to Henry’s this eve. got scales. Leo & family came here then came out to Henry’s to. Edgar Cox is presenting a show in school hall tonite about Admiral Byrd Exp. Adm. 10 & 25 [cents], wasn’t so crowded they say. Uncle [Fred] & Aunt Mary were up to see the show. Eggs 28 [cents] now. Oliver Birkner delivered 100 lb. chicken & hog pellets.

Sunday, Nov. 13, 1938

Went to mass. Henry & family were up for dinner & supper. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon & also Josie Keller & friends & landlords, 3 folks that live upstairs; took eggs & chickens along; she was operated on while back. Fr. Flanagans Boys Town picture is now being on at Lincoln.

Saturday, Nov. 12, 1938

Pap got load wood sold it to Emil for $2.00; he came over & paid this eve. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville this afternoon. So many flies, so warm today. Teurer [? – unclear] brought load corn, also Wittenauers brought a load; this morn. Leo & family came, they were out at Henry’s, they wasn’t at home.

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1938

Nice day. We went to Leo’s help butcher, also Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Mrs. Orlet helped. Vic Papenberg & Bessie Parker getting married 9 o’clock this morn. We went to dance at Daabs Club House, Elmer Parker & Cecelia were best, she wore dark blue dress, Bessie white & veil. Henry butchered today also, & we didn’t know it.

Tuesday, Nov. 8, 1938

Election day. Bert [Bertille] washed ironed, patched, scrubed [sic] basement & cleaned smoke house. Henry came, brought his calf hide up for Christ Buehler to take to St. Louis, he stopped here & took it. Jac. Neff came to pay Int. for Uncle Fred. left it here. Pap & Bert [Bertille] went up to vote after dinner. Susie sang song today for Louise Wittenauer by Ethel Staufbenbiel; Susie sings twice a day now. Took turnips out, about 1 bu. 1/2 large. Leo & family came, brought the truck back, going to butcher.

Saturday, Nov. 5, 1938

Isn’t so cold after the rain. Bert [Bertille] 24 yr. birthday. Wittenauers brought load corn shocked here today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, Henry’s family, Leo & family were here this eve. played cards, had popcorn, lemonade, wine & cake, apples etc.

Wednesday, Nov. 2, 1938

All Souls Day. Went to Red Bud had no mass till 8 o clock; went down for 6 was none, so went to Waterloo – high mass. Stopped at Henry’s & Shields. Geo. Schilling going to saw wood tomorrow for us. Shields is also going to help. Went to Leo’s this afternoon he is going to help & Uncle Fred. They are helping down at Chri. Buehlers today, papering I guess. etc. Henry Bruins have a baby girl born Sun. morn. Uncle & Aunt stopped in.

Friday, Oct. 28, 1938

Pap went up in woods stopped at Henry’s. He brought load corn, this afternoon, & told us about the fire at Jerome Cortner’s house burned to ground not much saved we didn’t no [sic] nothing about it, happened 12:30. Lorena was at Belleville, at hospital where her mother is a patient, when Jerome got to the house flames were coming out the window they say. Hecker fire department was out.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1938

Cooked kettle soap, made 3 qts. Picalia [sic], had beef soup dinner. Bert [Bertille] put flowers on windows. Henry brought load corn this afternoon, took scales & block & tackle along.
