Raining again all day. Pap went to Probst’s paid for repairs on Whip. Eichenseer’s have a new clerk Hy. Huelsmann is working there now they say. Berti got the mail, The ex post master Leohr died & buried last week; he had been ailing for quite a long time. Mrs. Walter Jauger was to taken to St. Mary Hospital for treatment, Pete Hoffmann is back at home again, but still unable to work.

Pap went in woods all day. Rose & Berti went out to Henry’s went along to E. St. Louis with them got permanents at Esther Beauty Shop on Sinclair Ave. for $2.50 a piece, pretty good so far. We got bu. apples for $1.25 willow twigs. Pete Hoffmann is in St. Louis hospital pretty sick, they say; we went shopping at E. St. Louis. stores this afternoon, met Maggie Grassheim & Pour brothers over there.

Pap & Rose went out to Henry’s got feed for crushing. A lady here wanted to know were [sic] Clarence Braun lives. Mr. Hoffmann Chev. dealer was out at Uncle Fred’s then came here, so far they haven’t made no bargain. Papa went out to see Uncle about it. This afternoon he went to Waterloo then to a Mueller sale by Foster Pond. It is pretty warm again today. Mr. Jake Friedrich of near Waterloo had a sun stroke Thurs; & isn’t well yet. There was an awful hail storm, west from here, one of Henry’s corn field is striped [sic], lying all ways they say, looks awful; worse yet closer by Waterloo. There is a free dance at Floraville at Keim’s tonite.

We washed, ironed. Cloudy day, no sun shining. Henry was up all day plowing had lunches & dinner. Papa is hauling coal 1 load this morning & 17 bus. & hauled 2 in afternoon. Bernice Wagner was here. Schools started all around today, Emil Hoffmann teacher here, boards by Oscar Klotz. Mrs. Kruse the Blackburn School again, have 10 children, Bill Geodell’s 2 & Al – 1 – Screviners 1 – Fehrs, Defenbaughs, Wilkerson, Rob [Robert] & Floyd.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Red Bud to Kirsch’s sale, this afternoon, stopped here awhile, they didn’t buy nothing; brought sack chick feed along. So many birthdays today, & many dances. Karban & Buss has one at Pautler’s; free one at Burksville. Walter Reheis has his at Manier’s Hall. Henry & family came, kids stayed here & we went, Gents 25 ladies free. Birkner Orc; not much of a crowd; he had to pay $5. for hall, besides the musci [sic]; people came paid & went again. Dudenhoeffers & Gusta’s niece & family, Lester & Margaret were out. Frank & Henry came down by Papa awhile. It started in raining at 12 o’clock. Rosalia got chain letter from Ruth Hoffmann. We planted our house flowers out.

Papa went out to Levi Ganley’s, & stopped at Henry’s; he came up & plowed the orchard, & potato ground; had dinner & lunch here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up again this afternoon, worked up here, Rose cut her striped dress & sew some this afternoon. We got 50 cabbage plants from Manier’s set them out this evening, surely are nice. Mr. Allan Mudd & his mother & Mrs. Phil Purtle of Red Bud stopped in & solcited [sic] for euchre prize, & selling chances on a hooked rug; we took one. Henry took load hay along home. Uncle Adam & Emil came awhile about 1 hr; paid for there oats 6½ bus. & 60¢..Mr. Herman Straub & wife of near Burksville, on Bozzoy place came & looked at the binder. The old officers of Road Dis. 3 were reelected; difference of 8 votes, Melching & Hoffmann, & Vogt & Wirth. John Heiken received it by 25 votes, in Reheis etc District through there.

It rained this morning. Meng’s couldn’t thresh, till this afternoon. We baked bread etc. Papa took the Whip to Probsts to get it fixed. The Waterloo paper has that Albert Niebruegge residing 7 miles from Valmeyer, was instantly killed when struck by lightining [sic], last Sat. at 5:30 & also rendered his farm hand unconscious for some time. He was carrying a hoe at the time & had just passed beneath a tree. George Hoffmann, who resides 3 miles east of Waterloo died last Wed. night, aged 61 yrs. illness of 2 weeks. Mrs. Richard Butler (nee Curran) of Burksville passed away last Thurs. June 28, after a long illness, aged 64 yrs; was buried at Waterloo, also funeral with Father Kuhl’s, Nonaghan & Traynor Eschmann, were Deacon & sub deacons; she leaves 7 children & husband Richard at home, & James, & Mrs. Ray Schmidt of Waterloo.
