Went to Belleville with things, all sold but 2 pumpkins. Uncle Fred working up here this morn; brought bucket of peas this afternoon she [Aunt Mary] came along up. We got 25 [cents] for eggs today. Frank Kroll’s have baby girl born Sat. eve. & Dominic Roth girl Sun. at Belleville Hospital. Reports are that Aaron Papenberg is going to build a house, on Kessler’s ground next to Kammler. Hy. Fereuer brought the 3rd of potatoes this eve. 15 bus. The war business is still going strong. Warsaw is nearly cleaned out, paper says, half burning, churches were bombed Sun. during services.

Raining all day, morn. & afternoon. Mrs. Kroll was buried this morn. Chas. Hepps sale & Mehrmann sale this afternoon, makes bad for both; everything cheap.

Raining this morn; pretty heavy rain to. Today is funeral at Waterloo of Andrew Dietz of Burksville & Mrs. Walsh at Tipton – Vincent mother; & Mrs. Kroll to be tomorrow morn. at Hecker, all at Quernheims parlor. We went to Waterloo this afternoon, took wheat in got 70 [cents] bus. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped, he went to Red Bud, & she went to Buehler’s. Warm this evening.

Went to Leo’s helped plant patch corn & make hay this afternoon; had lunch & chicken dinner there. We also had first cabbage of season of ours today. Rained this afternoon, but not so much, we need it alwful [sic] bad day. Mrs. Willing Kreher came home from Belleville Hospital yesterday, after giving birth to a 3 lb. baby, which is still in hospital in incubator. Planted out tomatoes & pepper plant last for season, sprayed potatoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, she went to Mrs. Staufenbiels, to see about her dress. Mrs. Agnes Kroll died of a stroke this morn; while Kate was at mass; she has been blind for good many years.

Good Friday. 28 degrees; warmer again for today. Went to church 7 o clock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in. Pete Hoffmann of near Waterloo died at Querheim Parlor & Mrs. Glessener, Kroll’s sister, passed away to [sic]. Mr. & Mrs. Farbers were here looked at mare. Bert [Bertille] fixed doz. eggs & 9 for A. [Aunt] Mary’s. Went to Red Bud 3 o clock church. heard Fr. Ore Service on radio. Went to Waterloo to see Pete Hoffmann & Mrs. Glessner, they have 3 people laid out, being awful busy all week. Mr. Hill came collected telephone dues. Bert Thompson & family going to move on Weber Farm & Webers moving to New Athens.
Monday, Sept. 27, 1937
Bert [Bertille] went to mass funeral of Kroll; rather large, all girls pallbearers, Pearl Griffin, Mary Arns, Alvera Braun, 2 ladies of Waterloo, Theresa Frisch. Mrs. Francis Eichenseer is being buried at St. Louis this afternoon, that is his second wife she formerly Ziebold girl of Red Bud but had married before; she has been ailing for 3 yrs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert [Bertille] helped them paper there kitchen ceiling across the street. One of our horses Barney is sick, had Doc. Miller out for him, he had supper also Uncle & Aunt Mary stayed Leona’s birthday but he didn’t get out, had company & sick horse.

Went to Red Bud took Roscow’s along to church, have 2 collections every Sun. during mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile, they went in to Waterloo see Milly Kroll also Mrs. Schrader. Mrs. Nick Welzbacher’s mother; was also laid out. Totsches have free dance.

Rained last nite, pretty nice shower. Henry stopped in, got crushing done. H. Wittenauer working on the land. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were here. We went to Waterloo church, & Columbia to see Hermann. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] were also at Waterloo, bought second hand sewing machine from Bersche for $18.50 delivered in good condition Singer, it doesn’t make a bit noise, runs smooth. Miss Amelia Kroll died Thurs. eve. at hospital from operation on gall stones, will be buried Mon. morning at Hecker church, & Waterloo cemetery. she & her mother kept house together here, her mother is blind.

Beautiful day. Bill Fritsche look & fix our furnace. Pap went up in woods, got load corn fodder. Frank Kroll wanted to see him, about lots at cemetery, so he had to go out there. Henry Schaefer of Waterloo died, to be buried tomorrow, at Hecker cemetery. Fr. Aydt to have mass at Waterloo at 10′ o clock then out to cemetery, there is 3 funeral masses at Waterloo, 2 are Stackels, one being Hy. Emery’s father in law, & Schaefer. Joe Gregson & Lester bought 2 acres of land from Wil. Harbaugh, $800.00, going to operate & build a filling station, it is already staked of. We went to Belleville this afternoon, pap went to dentist again.

Raining all day. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile. Leona’s birthday, they went to Waterloo, Geodells cleaned there cistern. Ray Wittenauer is still the same yet, unconscious. Frank Kroll’s have a baby girl since last Thurs. the paper says.
