Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1935

Pap & Rosalia went to Red Bud to John Schumacher’s funeral, so many people, the church was crowded; 11 priests with Fr. Stern. Fr. Schumacher & Harbaugh said mass; Fecklenburg sermon. Rose & Berti went out to Blackburn’s School, to see the program; It was pretty good; Alf. May’s boy was Santa. Quite a few people were there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, she went to church, he went down to Red Bud. They went home & came back again, stayed in town all nite. Henry & family also came up awhile, got overalls, tablets, & tops etc. had candy, nuts, apples, cookies. Received Christmas card from Duddenhefers.

Saturday, Dec. 21, 1935

Pap got crushing done. Mr. Rennecker got 1 qt. milk for 5¢. Mr. Kettler of Paderborn was here, looked at the mare, pap went to see his this afternoon, also went to Knab’s. Henry & Leona went to Belleville left the boys here they went skating on the pond. Pap took chev. to Probst’s got a new battery put in $7.00 & fan belt put on 65¢.

Saturday, Dec. 7, 1935

Leona brought the boys up, stayed all day, dinner & supper. Henry got them this eve; the beef didn’t sell so good, to many going around town with beef; we took 11¾ lbs; had roast for dinner. Made cream pies today. We went to Renneckers this evening, played 4 game pinochle, his brother Jake of Belleville was also there, visiting for several days. Pat May is having a free dance at Donahue’s tonite.

Wednesday, Dec. 4, 1935

Papa is working in the woods. Rose went out to Henry’s again, Leona got up this afternoon. Berti baked cookies all day. We went out to Uncle Freds this evening; she made lunch; listened to the radio.

Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1935

Rose went out to Henry’s. Leona is still in bed & Henry had to butcher at Uncle Adam’s; she was out all day; cleaned & ironed. Pap hauled load wood, & went out worked in the woods this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up. Ed & Carrie Brand went to Hy. Kessler’s tonite & leave in the morning for Alalabama [sic], taking her along.

Monday, Dec. 2, 1935

We washed, ironed. Papa went out trading; went to Waterloo & got the Whip curtains. Berniece brought the mail. Henry brought a load corn & Toptsy up, pap bought the horse for $100.00. Leona is sick in bed again, chills & feaver. Rose stamped a pair pillow cases to stitch.

Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1935

Cloudy & raining a little. Berti went up to church. Wedding mass of Clarence Braun & Verna Stiehl, she turned Catholic, single ring ceremony, bride wore dark blue, blouses & skirt, coat, & hat shoes; white crystahemums [sic], & bridesmaid Marie Braun wore the same only tan color; yellow flowers, Hugo Ray was best man; wedding dance at Kammler’s tonite, we went, had nice time; cake, Schmidts Orch.; of Herb & 2 sons, 2 Braun Wms. girls, & Edgar Wittenauer. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came bought 2 roasters here, 9 lbs. @ 15¢; cleaned & dressed them ready for tomorrow. Pap & Rose hauled bad old wheat to Waterloo got 91¢, lot is 96¢ today. Mr. & Mrs. Ed Brand of Alalabama [sic] visited us this afternoon, had supper here. Henry & family came this evening. Mamie came down then we went to the dance together. Bert Thompson was here to see Henry; so much company. Henry received a letter from Barrenphol’s lawyer on account of the colt business, he wants $25.00 if paid in short time. Oscar Birkner’s have a baby girl born yesterday evening, also Armin Geodelle’s have a baby girl. Otto Horn, suit agent at Waterloo, also Justice of peace 38 yrs. old was killed in an auto accident in town on Tues; Archie Wiehl was the one that had collision with him, on Fourth St. Libory  he was thrown out of car, & never regained conscience; both cars turned over, & completely wrecked; they say; it is terrible, had left his home about ½ hour before it happened; John Hieken was with Horn at the time, but not hurt bad.

Monday, Nov. 18, 1935

Henry & Leona, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here butchered 2, one for us & 242 lbs. & one for Uncle Freds 250 lbs; the boys went to school; Uncle Fred took load home & came back again for supper; it is his birthday 61 yrs. old, we went out this evening. Henry & family, Chris Buehlers family & Oscar Birkner & 2 boy’s & Kenneth Neff, were there, played pinochle, games, sang songs, had cake, cookies. Fredrick Fritsch was here wanted eggs, we had none. Hy. Armstutz brought load corn. Hecker school has visiting day; no school here.

Sunday, Nov. 17, 1935

Went to Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed up for dinner chicken; he & papa went out to Joe Henkel’s to look at the pigs, going to get 2 from him & butcher tomorrow. Leona came brought the kids up, we went along with them to Waterloo to Pautler’s, to the Rythm [sic] Kings, dance new orchestra, Laf. Geoddel Glessmer, & V. Keim, accordion, guitar & drums, sure good & crowd.

Thursday, Nov. 14, 1935

Pap went in the woods. Henry & Leona came & Billy. Henry went to Sam Mosio’s to get the corn & hog checks. his is $7 – 3.11, & paps one is $6.54 & $2.92; very little. Mehrman came & borrowed hammer; Wagner’s & Mehrmanns came over this evening had pinochle game. Mr. Mehrmann had 1500 trump again & also Berti had 1500 in clubs; different games.
