Beautiful day, washed ironed. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came had dinner here, he & Bert [Bertille] went to Waterloo on business. Emil came, he put in his lineleoum [sic – linoleum] at his place, in kitchen, all around. real pretty. Eichenseer put it in. Henry stopped in got crushing done. Lena Meng was here, see what pap tought [sic – thought] about oil leasing. A fellow here selling weather stripping for house, from St. Louis agent.

Friday, Aug. 20, 1937

Beautiful day; finished ironing, canned 5 qt peaches. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon, she helped to peel, cut lawn etc. Chris Buehler brought Henry’s 2 colts here, pap bought them from Henry $85 a piece. Lena Meng looked at peaches. We got 20 ½¢ for springs sold here to Mertz 18 – 51 lbs.

Awful hot today. Canned plums made perserve [sic]. Eggs 16¢ down again. Werner Kammler is threshing today at Meng’s.

Thursday, April 22, 1937

Beautiful day, pap went in woods this afternoon cut posts for hay floor. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came cut lawn. We went to Leo & Rose tonite, Jake was also there, we got 4 settings of eggs @ 19¢. Bert [Bertille] cleaned front room waxed floor etc, cut lawn. Pap went over to Meng’s got cap for wagon wheel, he had lost his & found again by Geo. Parkers; the last time when he was in the woods that happened yesterday the wheel came of [off] by the gate.

Town Election, pap served as judge $3. he gets. I didn’t go to vote, all same officers, only J. Meng in place of Os. Neff, & Milton Wagner lost. L. Birkner & M. Armstutz each received 1 vote for trustees & A. Stuart got 2 – J. Griffin 1 for police & Gus. Frisch 20 for treasurer, he also gets in; there were in 80 vote cast. Raining all day. Bert [Bertille] washed, put in basement, to much rain. We ate our first lettuce today, certainly tastes good.

Ironed curtains, patched. Roman Meng the acessor [sic] was here. Steve Rennecker brought the boards back what he got for papering. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came Bert went along to Waterloo to Wihelm’s sale, bought flower pots, got free can paint at Hamacher’s, advertising, also got chance to win 3 articles to be raffled tonite there. Received the benefit check – $102.03. Raining & colder this eve. Literary in Public School tonite; speaking by H. Hill, Sup of Schools of Belleville. Birkners Och. & Dor. & Osc. Lippert. Eggs .20¢ today. Wheat $1.39.

Wednesday, April 7, 1937

Bert went along with Ivo Buehler to Leo’s, helped ironed, patch, had dinner & supper there went along to Paderborn play tonite. Texas Ranger’s, boy what crowd, players were, Hy. Roth, Al & Bertha Karban, Isd. & Ceceila [sic] Watchel, Sly. Neff, Sy. Louis Schoenborn, Esther Helfrich, Marcella Schilling, Cryil Haudrich, Skaer’s Schoenborn played for dance after play, sure was good. Hermann of Columbia got the mule in trade for cow & pigs $65 booth [sic-both]. Leo has there cow & pigs. Bert Thompson was here, pap was over at Meng’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary bought Bert home this eve.

Raining a little Pap went out with buggy & horse on a trip down to Bert Thompson’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came took Bert along, went up to see Leo & Rose awhile, Hennrick of Walsh was there & got a cow, & brought a different one, but they didn’t like it. One of the Divian’s twin babies died at the Red Bud hospital; I seen in the paper, isn’t so much news this week, Winnie Ganley & husband transfer of $1. to Geo Schilling. Mr. Jerome Meng is be sow accessor this year & Ed. Frisch at Henry’s. Thunder tonite & raining.

Thursday, March 18, 1937

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, pap went along in to Belleville, to attend Mrs. Kate Buehlers funeral from Reumer’s [Funeral Home] to Ruma Church, at 9 o’clock; there were 8 cars from Belleville. Pallbearers from Ruma Congregation, pretty large funeral quite a few people of around here went down to Ruma. She was keeping house for an Ins. [Insurance] Man at Belleville, the children all had to come in there this afternoon & get her clothes & things at that place. Lena Meng came over to see Uncle Fred on business. Pap took the team, went after load of posts. Eppinger was here again but pap didn’t want to sell it today, he has a sore leg, limbs. Mrs. Staufenbiels said today that Alice Brand in California was going to buy land & house on it  & more. Miss Stella Roscow is visiting down at California now, at Kern’s, she is going by Alice.

Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1936

We washed, ironed, patched; cleaned upstairs took the tree & decorations down. Some guys here this afternoon wanted to use our sheet [? – unclear] to unload some mules, 1 had been lying down in there, they were afraid it would get killed; & they got stuck in the yard, before they even got that far; some time, cut tracks over the whole place, & didn’t even say as much as thank you, came from way down in Mo. some place. Ed. Meng came yet to & Clarence Wagner. The St. Augustine School, they have lotto & euchre tonite given by the Young Ladies Sodality. Geo. Wagner butchered today. Found 3 doz. eggs. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, & pap & Bert went along up to the euchre party, the quilt by playing 1 game lotto was won by Joe Watchel, we didn’t get a thing. Pap had 7 & Bert 4 & A. Mary 2 & Uncle Fred 12 he got a table cloth, the prizes were nice, but not very many & hall was filled, all the tables, surely nice crowd lot of N. Athens & Paderborn. Fr. Teonnies was also down. Leo & Rose went to see Geo. Orlet by Floraville.
