Thursday, March 24, 1932

This morning we went to church, communion at 8 oclock, & mass at 9 o clock. We had dinner over at Uncle Freds. This afternoon Bert Thompson brought 2 colts & got 3 hogs, even up trade. This afternoon we went to Mrs. Dugan to see if she would buy our eggs, but she had plenty, so we took them to Waterloo to Krogers got 10¢, had 51 doz. eggs, then papa & Gus Geodelle went out to Henry Ambrecht west of Waterloo & looked at a mule, seen him work, then tonight Henry took the buggy & went after him, we came home & papa & Uncle Fred went back to Henry Ambrecht again got 2 hogs & mule for $35.00. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had supper with us, we took Uncle Freds car & went out to Henry’s, Bobby’s birthday 6 year. old. cake, lemonade served. Rosalia got a letter from Rosie Meuth inviting us all to come to Oak Grove Mar. 30, for her wedding dance, Osie Matzenbacher. We went to church in Waterloo awhile this afternoon, till papa got back. Ella Stalheber was here but we weren’t at home.

Wednesday, March 2, 1932

Papa got 17 peach trees from Uncle Fred’s accross [sic] the street & planted them out. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this afternoon then we went to Belleville & got new dress for Easter. Henry came up this evening & got the scale, he is selling 3 of his pigs to Philip Meuth .4¢.

Friday, Jan. 8, 1932

Papa took Jac. Neff along & they went out to Henrys butchered his heifer, papa brought 54 lbs. along & Neff took 13 lbs. This afternoon papa took Neff along up to the woods, him & Paul want to make wood up there, so papa showed him where to make it at.

Aunt Mary was saying yesterday had Barbarba [sic-Barbara] Meuth was awful bad sick, she was out of her mind, they where going to take her away, she got that way since Sun. nite. they took her to Anna.

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1931

Mr. Harbaught the mineral feed man was here. Aunt Mary got the mail today. Mr. Laut looked at our pond. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Ettling, Henry, Wm. Ganley where digging the pond, they where here for dinner. They worked about 6 hrs, because it rained this afternoon. Ed Meng, H. M. Hill where here & looked at it. There was a lady here, bought 5 lb. sprs. 19¢ lb. Henry lost a heifer. Hon. Fred Kern passed away Mon. morning 4:30, got a parlyitic [sic] stroke. he was Editor of the Belleville News Democrat. Osie Neff & John Meuth had a most terrible accident today, they where crossing a bridge by Frisch korns [?] in Lord’s Corner, with a engine, when the bridge broke, the engine is still in the creek yet. Osie was scaled pretty bad on his leg, the skin was all of & his chest, John Meuth has a hole through his hand & has it in a sling. Osie say’s if it wouldn’t of been that Johny was there he, would still be lieying [sic] there. Gus. Klotz is sick in bed next thing to appendix. He has it in his side. Dr. Schmidt wife of Red Bud was buried this afternoon, she had pneumonia.

Tuesday, July 21, 1931

This morning our cistern is full again.  Papa went up town this morn.  We dug a bucket full of straw potatoes, & planted some more pickle seed, & turnip seed.  Papa & Rosalia fixed fenced this afternoon.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up again this afternoon.  We all had lunch there.  We helped her scrubb [sic] the porch & rooms.  I seen in the paper today that Clarence Rittinhouse 26 & Arthur Meuth had a serious accident last Sat. night at 10 o clock.  On the Belleville bridge right south edge of town, he met a car & the lights blinded him & he side swiped a third car coming, & his machine ran of the pavement & down the bankment of, the down in there, the machine caught fire & Rettinghouse was burnt arms & legs, he still in the hospital & the ambulance was called to take Mueth to the hospital, but he was discharged after treatment.  Rettinghouse & Zollmer the car which was damaged they will settle it between themselves.

Saturday, April 11, 1931

We all went out to Henry’s this afternoon, & took them along, went to Waterloo to Mrs. Dan Geodell’s funeral, it was rather large.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were also in.  Aunt Mary, & Uncle Adam, rode along with us to the cemetery & back again to town.  We seen Rosie Meuth today, gave her a pleasant call for a short while.  Mr. Caldwell was in Waterloo today.  He sold his farm along the hard road from people from St. Louis for $5,000.  Papa went up town this evening.  Harry Kammler’s having a dance tonight.  I don’t think the crowd was very large.  Mamie Eichenseer came down this evening & then Clarence & Mrs. Eichenseer came after her around 9 o’clock.

Friday, Jan. 30, 1931

Papa went out to work on the church farm again.  This afternoon Rosalia & Bertille went out to Aunt Mary’s.  Papa came over there too with Uncle Fred.  We all had supper there.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped in this eve. before they went down to the dance at Wiegands.  The transfer of Anna Braun’s property was in the paper today.  It was in the paper about Gregory Neff & Hedwig Watchel, they were married Tues. morning at Paderborn.  Alvin Roos & Florence Meuth were also married at Paderborn this week.  The license for Elmer Quirin 21 to Lena Roth, Hecker, 22 were in the Times.

Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1931

Today is Mrs. Boll’s birthday.  We are going to butchered today.  The last one now.  Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all here for dinner today.  Leona when [went] to Red Bud to the dentist this afternoon.  We seen in the paper the marriage license of Alven Roos & Florence Meuth, & Gregory Neff & Hedwig Watchel all of Paderborn.  Last Sun. Lena Roth & Ed. Quirin were published for the first time in church.

Sunday, Jan. 11, 1931

Henry & family were here for dinner today, after that we played pinochle.  Papa & Leona won against Henry & Bertille.  Angela Eichenseer was here this afternoon, then Rosalia & Angela & Papa & Bertille we won 4 games out of 5 that one we lost.  Fr. Grootens has a sermon about the bank this morning.  He said the Waterloo Bank.  Jas. Schmidt, Roy Gauer, Dr. Pintler & him were going to Springfield tomorrow & find out about it.  This evening Angela came back again then we played 2 more games of pinochle & Rosalia & Angela won both of them.  We heard today that Rosie & Mamie Meuth left Joe Meuth’s last Tues. evening, walked off & went to Waterloo.  There are a good many cars passing tonight I guessed there all going to the dance down at Wiegand’s, we were invited, but didn’t go.  It rained all day.

Saturday, Dec. 27, 1930

Papa went to the sale 1/2 north of Tiptown Church, it was Mike Elonka sale.  Papa didn’t buy anything.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were there too.  Harold Wagner was here this afternoon taking orders to sell flower and garden seeds.  This evening we went out to Meuth’s.  Rose & Josie were out from St. Louis.  The rest of the girls weren’t home, they had to work.
