Canned tomatoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she helped wash dishes & clean for pinic [sic] to be next Wed. 9. Threshing machines all started again this afternoon, after all rain. Chas Shad daughter of Columbia bottoms Vernet & Walter Pieper of Merimac were married at Columbia on July 29. had a dance at New Hanover. Mr & Mrs Joe Mauer are celebrating there 24 Silver Wedd. Ann. today, mass this morn. at 9. & dance at Mid Way Inn tonite; they are now living in Red Bud; paper says Misses Alfreda & Mary Wittenauer are spending vacation in Michigan.

Friday, Sept. 23, 1938

Bert finished cleaning upstairs. Baked cake etc. Pap took lime dust spreader home out to Henrys with team & wagon, was going to help him spread but he wasn’t ready to start yet. Transfers in Waterloo paper Homringhausen Bro. to Chr. [unclear] Buehler. Going to be a free wedding dance at Log Cabin & one at MidWay Inn tomorrow nite; don’t know who is getting married. Went to Leo’s this eve. cut lawn etc. Leo took his dad home.

Saturday, Sept. 28, 1935

Papa has some sores on his face now, something like Henry & them had it. Beautiful day, nice warm again. Chas. Schilling is giving a birthday dance at Pautlers tonite, Moonlight Orch. Adm. gent 25 ladies free. There is also a few birthday dance at Donahue’s Midway Inn, musci [sic] by Phil Carle & entertainers; Rose & Bert went to Waterloo this afternoon, took papa’s watch to Bersche’s to get spring fixed, it was broke. Clara Wagner wanted flower slips, we weren’t home. Rose & Bert went to see Mamie this evening; seen her quilts & etc; listened to radio.

Friday, Aug. 24, 1934

Papa & Rose put roofing on the barn, nice cool this morn. Pierre Laut is sick, tonsil’s, has 104 fever. A man here wanted to see Uncle Fred, wanted a drill; but it is already sold. Peaches at Waterloo are selling at $1.65 -75 a bu. by Al. Heyl’s; all $2. & 35 around here. Mr. James Crowe son of the late police men[,] James Crowe, was married Tues. morning to Miss Flora Wielbacher of Columbia, & at that parish, he was formerly of Waterloo, but now of Columbia were he is employed as mechanic there in garage. The New Athens & Hecker hard road route, 156 is now opened. Miss Mildred Rist 15 yr. old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joh Rist was operated for appendix; last Friday in Red Bud Hospital. Miss Elva Knapp, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Knapp was honored with a shower, given by & Misses Edna & Lavina Geodelle, she will become the bride to Mr. Harold Kloft of East St. Louis, the marriage to take place early in Sept. Last Mon. morning Bill Donahue of Midway Inn on Route 3, was awakened by a barking dog, on investigating found that his 25 half grown turkeys had disappeared, from there roosting place, he found 19 doped [sic – dropped] in a cornfield nearby.
