Sunday, Nov. 7, 1937

Went to mass. Jake Neff came to see Uncle Fred. We went to Smithton to see Stehl & Nic Schaefer, came out on oil road stopped in at Leo’s awhile; came home. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came looked at our horse, then we all went to Uncle Fred’s for supper chicken, & played 5 card pinochle, had popcorn, nuts & refreshments; looked at picture.

Saturday, Oct. 2, 1937

Rained this eve; in morn. We went to Oswald Neff’s sale this afternoon, lot of things for sale. we didn’t buy anything. Henry brought 2 sacks potatoes. Feherez looked at the barrow. Pap burned potatoe [sic] straw this morn. Went out to Uncle Freds, then they & we went to see Emil awhile. Cooler this eve. again.

Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1937

Catholic Schools open today. Canning peaches cooking catsup, etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed for supper last nite, then we all went to Smithton to Catholic Church pinic [sic]. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Floraville dance, Viola Kaburcek birthday all free. Skaers Orch; nice crowd present. Hy Miller of Lords Corner is being buried at Stehfests cemetery this afternoon, Elsie Spalts husband 41 yrs. old had cancer nothing left to him, didn’t weigh 100 lbs. they said. Pap was at the cemetery; he belonged to Broad Hollow Grange & was a soldier, so they all had there ceremonies at cemetery; awful large funeral. Henry brought load of corn on frame wagon Billy [Willis] also. Levi Feurer stopped in looked at pigs. We went to. Ignatz Neffs got bottles & cans & bought 2 doz. jars 20¢. went to Leo’s got some grapes for wine, took peaches along & peeled & canned 4 qts.

Saturday, Aug. 28, 1937

Picked peaches, etc. Mrs. Jake Neff got bu. this morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to sales at Hoffmann at Red Bud then out to J. Mays by Oak Grove; some things brought fair price. May Auctioneer, James clerk. Free dance at Keimes tonite; musci [sic] by Skaers Orch. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came Bert went along, nice crowd & hot. Schoenborn & Rehling had scrap.

Thursday, July 15, 1937

Bert [Bertille] went to Henry’s got jugs; he isn’t feeling well, stomache [sic] trouble. Jac Erle came on business, we canceled the Whip Ins. Sally Neff came this eve. Pap went over to Geo Napier’s, she & kids were at Chas. Wagners threshing. Sally Neff was at Probst’s.

Thursday, May 20, 1937

We paint chicken house etc. Pierre got milk. We planted 53 cabbage plants. Oscar Birkner have 18 mons. Muriel’s picture taken at Belleville Studio it is in the paper, also Jerome Cortner’s girl’s picture to be 2 yrs old in Aug. 31. Gypsy Joe sang a song for Lorraine Cortner by Ray Neff.

Monday, May 10, 1937

Cleaned chicken house & barn, worked in garden. Pap went on business trip & also to Waterloo to a big sale on Pautler’s farm west of town; people from Marrissa [sic] have a sale, on stock & tractors etc. Cool this morn. A fellow here selling household articles; bought fly swatter. The fire engine whistle was sounded this morn; called to the home of Andrew Mueth in Paderborn, were there house was on fire; but it was put out, before they got there. Rose came this afternoon, helped plant out flowers; took some along home, we planted all the house flowers out. Mrs. Rennecker came over awhile this afternoon. Jake Neff was here on business this evening. Cool again tonite.

Tuesday, April 20, 1937

Town Election, pap served as judge $3. he gets. I didn’t go to vote, all same officers, only J. Meng in place of Os. Neff, & Milton Wagner lost. L. Birkner & M. Armstutz each received 1 vote for trustees & A. Stuart got 2 – J. Griffin 1 for police & Gus. Frisch 20 for treasurer, he also gets in; there were in 80 vote cast. Raining all day. Bert [Bertille] washed, put in basement, to much rain. We ate our first lettuce today, certainly tastes good.

Wednesday, April 7, 1937

Bert went along with Ivo Buehler to Leo’s, helped ironed, patch, had dinner & supper there went along to Paderborn play tonite. Texas Ranger’s, boy what crowd, players were, Hy. Roth, Al & Bertha Karban, Isd. & Ceceila [sic] Watchel, Sly. Neff, Sy. Louis Schoenborn, Esther Helfrich, Marcella Schilling, Cryil Haudrich, Skaer’s Schoenborn played for dance after play, sure was good. Hermann of Columbia got the mule in trade for cow & pigs $65 booth [sic-both]. Leo has there cow & pigs. Bert Thompson was here, pap was over at Meng’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary bought Bert home this eve.

Sunday, Jan. 10, 1937

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family were all here for dinner & supper. Aunt Mary & Rosalia went to Lizzie Boll’s. We went to Pautlers tonite, Herb Probst & Eugene Neff birthday dance, sure a big crowd. Skaer Bros. played. Adm. 25¢.
