Uncle Fred & Papa went down to Mr. Albert Gregson’s sale, didn’t get anything. Starr Auc. & Russel Gregson clerk, everything brought pretty fair price. Two fellows here from Wartburg, Dunn, bought our 3 heifers $57.50, going to get them Mon. morning; wanted to buy Jersey Bull from Henry also. We & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went out to Roberts birthday 8 yrs. old; the only ones present had cake. Brought Mr. Cleveland & Grover along out from Hecker, they got there machine in the Ed Neffs garage, broke the head, pouring hot water in while cold, & Emil froze his radiator up, the last cold spell. Oh, Boy!
Monday, March 5, 1934
Papa hauled hay. We washed. Ed Neff repaired our Whippet this morning. Papa got the mules hoofs trimed [sic]. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening, went up to see Louise Birkner, she is getting along pretty good; then they & Rosalia went to Belleville to John Breutigams to see Mr. John Birkner, 78 yrs. old; his wife nee Armstutz died 5 yrs. tomorrow. Mrs. Anna Helfrich, died yesterday morning at the home of this daughter, Mr. Joe Karban of Paderborn, we’ll [sic] be buried tomorrow morning 8 o ‘clock mass there. That is Nic Helfrich’s mother & George Neff’s grandma, there boy is the only great grandchild. Mr. Hill was here for news. Mr. Valentine Berg died this morning & will be buried Wed. morning 9:30 Catholic Church here, & then to cemetery. He was making his home with Ed his son, in Blackjacks age 84 yrs.

We didn’t go to church today; snowing & sleeting all day. George Wagner & Steve Rennecker came over to sign hog papers for the processing tax, $2.23 for Jan. Steve stayed & we played cards, 4 games, he won 3. Monroe Co. C. W. A. are laying men off now till down to 6, stayed working: Osie Neff, Pete Watchel, all them are off, from Hecker, is only Jack Reagan, Hy. Meng, Hy. Braun working & there is Chas. Helfrich, Wilhelms, Leifer & some yet from Round Prairie working the snow plow went down & up, several times, but didn’t help much.
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 1934
We patched, ironed, quilt patches. Papa went up in the woods. The St. Michael’s Church of Paderborn are giving a euchre to nite in the Church Hall there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we all went, but none of us were lucky. Mrs. Berniers won the quilt that was raffled; Adm. 25, & crowd dance after, musci [sic] furnished by Rheinhardt’s orchestra. Ed Neff’s have a little baby boy born this afternoon, talk is on, married 1 mon. 2 days.
Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1934
We washed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & Josie, here for dinner & supper, played pinochle this evening then had midnite lunch 11:30. Josie held 1500 trump twice hand running, & 600 queens & round house all in same game. Bert had 600 queens. Papa & Uncle Fred got Josie’s machine up from Ben Heyl’s, pulled it up behind Uncle’s car. Ed Neff started it today & put in alchol [sic] all for $1.00. Josie took cheese, butter, sausage & things along, Mr. Talbot delivered 5 lbs. here for 22¢ a lb.
Friday, Jan. 26, 1934
Pap went to Hecker. Vic Eichenseer came & fixed our pump at the straw shed. the E. W. A. roadworkers started again today, only work 15 hrs. week. Seven were fired, & 4 new ones put on, they are Chas. Helfrich, Hy. Brown, Philip Jatho, Osie Neff put on, & those fired, where Robert Laut, Hecker & 2 guys from Waterloo. Meyer’s, Hy. Emery, Bill Sensel. Rosalia went after the mail. Pierre Laut was here yesterday evening, said we could come & help quilt this afternoon; Rosalia went; Mrs. Rennecker, Mrs. George Kammler were the quilters for today. It is sun burst quilt they had lunch. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up awhile this afternoon. We had cooked cheese from Mertz store, lb. Adam Eckert’s butter; all was good. This evening we went out to Uncle Freds, Aunt Mary’s 57 birthday, cake & orangeade was served to the following: Mrs. Oscar Birkners family, Frank Birkner’s family, Christ Buehler’s family, Wm. Birkner’s family, Miss Josie Keller, Pinochle & lotto was played by the kids, got prizes; Frieda got attendance prize again. Miss Josie spent the day by Lizzie Boll’s.

Osie Neff is here butchering a heifer for us; for 75¢. George Schilling was here to see Osie; A quarter of beef weighs 80 lbs. & 83 lbs; Robert Laut & Chas Helfrich’s got each a quarter. Mr. Ed Meng got some beef; here. Levi Gregson came up to see about some hogs. Milton Wagner got beef here. Mrs. Wm. Gregson & Mrs. Rennecker was here, Mrs. Gregson got a piece for soup meat.

Nice day, froze last nite. Papa & Rosalia took load to Waterloo, got 73¢, & sack soft wheat flour for $2.95. We quilted this afternoon. A dirigible went southwest, right low. There was a bunch went to Ed. Neff’s & chivaried him this eve.
Sunday, Jan. 7, 1934
We went to Red Bud, took Helfrichs along. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner, played pinochle, left about 2:30 went to see Wilfred Eichenseer, they was to bring him home about 2 o’clock. There was a bunch going to chivari Ed Neff last night, but on account of this accident they didn’t. We all went to Eichenseer’s this evening, stayed till 8:30, after the rosary was said; there were quite a few came in & out; some stayed. Angela [the deceased’s sister] takes it awful hard; not so bad on the rest of the family.

Papa went to see Pete Watchel’s. Harold Wagner was here wanted to sell & take orders for seeds. Ed. Neff 26 & Bertha Helfrich 20 were married at Paderborn Hecker, this morning at 7 o clock mass. Mr. Vogt, Kroll’s son in law will move to Hecker, & is going to start, hauling milk for Peveley Diary [sic], he will come & take the milk right from the house; he told Henry, but Henry had sent to Waterloo, & now he can’t sent none at all till 30 days; he was supposed to give St. Louis Dairy 30 days notice & didn’t do it. Mr. Henry Acker of Lords Corner died this afternoon at 1’o clock will be buried Sun. afternoon, there. Louis Dehn butched [sic] by Renneckers.
