We washed, ironed, patched, cooked catsup, canned tomatoes, pickles & beans. Ben Valentine a deaf & dumb mute was here selling moth tabs for a living, he has a wife & 2 children & lives in Red Bud Ill., his wife is also like him, but his children can talk & hear, he had 2 brothers & 1 sister that don’t hear & talk, we took one for 15¢. There was man here from Sparta selling home grown peaches for $2.00 bu., there were nice, but we didn’t take any. Mr. Jung was here & got 9 doz. eggs. 15¢. Henry & family came up this evening & got tomatoes, the yellow ones, for canning.

Aunt Mary gave us some pickles, & we canned 2 qts. Rosalia & Bertille went out to Henry’s to help can peaches, 9 qts. & 4 qts. beans, 6 pints pickles, she canned 16 qts tomatoes, got them from Aunt Lizzie for nothing, all real big tomatoes. We had dinner there. Papa was hauling wood. Osie Neff was here & Clifford Stalbber was here & got 2½ doz. eggs @ 18¢. There a lot of people working at the cemetery trying to help get it leveled off before tomorrow. Today is Creses birthday 19 yrs. old.
Monday, Sept. 7, 1931
Today is pinic [sic] in Smithon [sic], Red Bud & Tiptown. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came then we left went out west stopped at Henry’s took some peaches there, then went to Tiptown pinic [sic]. Uncle Fred’s was lucky he won $1 bill & a book of thickets [sic], 5 chances to win, 1st on a washing machine, rug, flour, groceries. There where a lot of Waterloo people present. From there we drove to Red Bud, & stopped at the pinic [sic] there, they pumped an inner tube, up til it bust, I believe 45oo lb. Joe Werts helped to. We met a few people that we knew.

We canned saurkraut, [sic] 8 qts from 2 gallons. We washed this morning, started about 10 o clock, because it looked so like rain. This afternoon we went out to Aunt Mary’s helped with the peaches. We had lunch & supper there. Henry & Leona came there too & left the kids there, while they went to Belleville. She took a basket of peaches along from her, they also got a bu. from Ralph Collier’s at Waterloo, for 50¢. This evening Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped here, they went down to see Adam Eckert he is in bed, with Rhuematism [sic] since Sat a week, it started, he had to crawl in the house, it is so in his legs. It was in the paper that Anton Buehler left Mon. for Mascoutah, where he will be the guest of Chas. Mueth’s family.

We cut in 2 gals. kraut. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was up this afternoon, her & Rosalia went down to Dr. Eckert’s & each took 1 peck of peaches for 15¢ a peck. There where some people strangers from St. Louis, stopped in & wanted to buy chickens, we sold them 17 lbs. spring for 20¢ lb. Aunt Mary sold them 2 gals, greengages 10¢ gal. She gave George Wagner’s a basket full. Papa got crushing done this morn.

Today is washing, iron & patch day. There was a truck through here from Chester selling peaches, 80¢ bu. picked over. Mr. Harbough the Moorman’s Mineral Agent was here this afternoon. It started raining again.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up this afternoon & Leona & the kids where also here, she came up to get a bu. of peaches from Dr. Eckert for 60¢ bu. nice, she & Aunt Mary & Rosalia went over to George Wagner’s & looked at them first, she got hers there too. Bill Lehr was here, he is going all over town taking orders. Aunt Mary helped to peel the rest of ours & we got 6 more cans, we got 40 cans about 20 to a bu. we would have about 42 cans with those what we ate. Al Rittmeyer was here trying to sell brushes & the like. We sure had lot of rain & nice.

Papa & Rosalia went after the peaches this morn, they got 2 bus. from Gross Orchard for 65¢ a bus. there where so many trucks there loading. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up to help to peel them, we caned [sic] 32 qts. so far, the green ones we layed back, they where here for lunch & supper, we also canned 1 qt. pickles, 2 tomatoe, 1 greengage. This evening there was a big truck around with peaches from Ava, Ill. they sold quite a few in town here, the Eichenseer’s got 8 bus. they where also 65¢ bu. Aunt Mary & Bertille where at George Wagner’s this evening. Henry & family where all here, he went to Eckert’s, & Kessler’s, looking for peaches. Eggs 15¢ & wheat 42 at Red Bud today.
Saturday, August 15, 1931
Papa went to Belleville church this morning. Emil came down a little while. About 10 o clock this morn.- we started out for a trip, all of us, & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, took our basket along. We drove to Red Bud, Ruma, Evansville, then to Mike Gross Peach orchard, & ordered 2 bus. 75¢ bu. they gave us some to take along, then we drove to New Palastine & went to Ed Hale sale, we didn’t stop long, then went to Walsh, from there to Baldwin, Preston, then to New Athens, Freeburg, where we took in the parade of 40 floats & 7 bands, sure was nice, then to Douglas, Smithon, [sic] Hecker, then had supper. We exactly covered 120 miles. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went home. Meng got his horses this morn.

Papa is picking the potatoes through. Today is wash day, but it ain’t so very nice yet. It rained again last night, so threshing is stopped for awhile. Alsa Eckert was here, she wanted to know if we wanted some plums or peaches, the little peaches they sell for 50 bu. & the big ones next week for $1 bu., we didn’t order any yet. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up again this afternoon. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s, & then came home & fixed fence. Uncle Fred went up to the priest & paid pew rent.
