Went to early mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile, brought a watermelon along that they bought at Red Bud store; had real watermelon lunch, couldn’t eat half of it 28 lbs. it weighed. Ralph Wiegand stopped in & brought Rose Wedding present at tea kettle aluminum. Steve Rennecker came here awhile then went up to pinic [sic]. The Ladies Aid have there pinic [sic] today at Maniers Park; dance this eve. chicken supper. Uncle Fred & A. Mary, Leo & Rose came we ate watermelons then went to pinic [sic]; much larger crowd; quilt went to Ad. Rittmeyer’s girl, bed spread Hy Armstutz & pillow slip, I don’t know; It was awful cloudy, hot, thundering, but it didn’t rain very much, light shower this eve late.

Washed, ironed, patched, canned 5 qts peaches. Its awful hot this afternoon. Hy Birkner’s – Glenn had a song sung for him today, birthday is Sat; was requested by a friend from Belleville, on Gypsy Joes program. At Oscar’s moving yesterday they had 2 kegs beer & case root beer. At the Tipton pinic [sic], $100 – went to a fellow from Joulit [Joliet?] $35 to Dorthy Burkhardt, at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came we went along to Red Bud church pinic [sic], had supper there – 50¢; lots chicken, was pretty good supper, nice crowd. The quilt that was raffled was won by Norbert Seifert, pillow slips to Perryville Mo; center piece to Kaffoi. Stella Roscow won a beautiful quilt playing bluey, & Ben Mudd, from St. Louis, won 2 at bluey stand, sure some luck, they also played for cash, & pillow slips; we didn’t win a thing.

Went to 6:30 mass; going to have pinic [sic] soon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Chas. Mueth & Jake Orlet came looked at pigs, Jake wants to buy some. Henry came up, he says he heard Schilling’s going to thresh Wm. Ganley’s & Lohrmann’s wheat first, he is going to see Geo. Schilling see what he says. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along with them to Paderborn to Totsch’s free dance & what a crowd. Skaers Orc.
Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1936
We cleaned upstairs, after the rain; A man here want to buy white oak timber. We got the order from Chicago Mail – everything o.k. pap overalls 38 & jumper 42 rather large, Bert shoes 5 o.k. Waterloo is going to have pinic [sic] again this eve; but it is thundering & raining again now. Fr. Frankovich & Uncle Matt are advertising it. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, we all went to Waterloo Pinic [sic], sure had a nice crowd, had sold over 600 tickets for supper last nite, & had supper again tonite, Waterloo Band played. Herr Hugo German Band, Hug. Radan Orch,; all played a few pieces. We didn’t win anything, from 44 prizes; played a bingo for quilt. Mrs. Pete Kleim won it. It rained a little, but didn’t spoil the pinic [sic] any.

No rain, cooler. Hy. Armstutz came with a crop & we shipped 2 doz. chickens. Hy Kleber that lives on Meng farm is now moving again to Floraville. Today Waterloo has church pinic [sic], 75 Anniv. Fr. Freund has mass there this morning, he is now at St. Luke’s at Belleville, as assitant [sic]. Pap got load corn fodder again. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, had dinner here. Pap went to Waterloo this afternoon. It started raining at 2’o clock, & kept up all nite we didn’t get to the pinic [sic]. they sold 500 supper tickets. Pinic [sic] is again tomorrow.

We washed, ironed. Helfrich hauled lime dust 6 loads 23 ton, Pap spread it this afternoon, & we helped. Lucinda Eichenseer was here selling chances for there pinic [sic] on Aug. 5. Temperature 105 degree’s.

Beautiful day. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, awhile before mass. Mrs. Emma Eckert brought the veil back, had it borrowed for Emmie Solemn Coummioun [sic – Communion]. We went to Red Bud for 7:30 mass, but it is changed now to 6:30 & 8:30 masses, so we came to late, so stayed for high mass & benediction. The Evangical [sic] Church Ladies Aid got cold supper & pinic [sic] today, at church grounds. The Hecker Baseball Club has a dance at Kammler’s Hall musci [sic] by Schmidts. We went to pinic [sic] awhile. Pap went for supper, also Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary. Birkner’s Orch. played musci [sic]. Mrs. Milton Wagner won the free game of bluey, & also the quilt in lotto, & Mrs. Frieda Koreber won 1 quilt in bluey & 1 that was raffled out; sure luck. Edgar Wittenauer was stabbed with a knife last nite by Maniers, isn’t so bad; fellow from Athens; sheriff came out & took him to Waterloo Jail.

Beautiful Decoration Day. Pap went to see Uncle Adam this afternoon. School pinic [sic] in Waterloo this morn; all day dance in new pavillion [sic]. The Paderborn Hatchery is having a dance at Carrie Totchs Hall there tonite free; we went to the school pinic [sic] dance at Pautlers pavillion [sic], nice crowd, good time.

Papa went out to Henry’s; cut some clover hay off. Mr & Mrs. Steve Rennecker’s wedding anniversary. Sure is some hot day’s. Quite a few people from K.C. pinic [sic] at Murphysboro Sun; Eichenseer family went. Henry was using the team for harrowing so papa came home. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he took load wheat to Red Bud, got 95¢. We got the free Sacred Heart ring; that was send for through the Extension Magazine, but only one came & 10 medals.
Sunday, Sept. 15, 1935
Went to Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & Rose & Bert went along to Smithon [sic] Turner Pinic [sic], not much of a crowd, came more in the evening. We got chances on winning 15 quilts. Went to Oak Grove free dance Au Buchon’s Orch. pretty nice crowd. Hy Huelsmann & Rosilla Braun were published first time today.
