Awful hot. Pap dug 2 rows potatoes. H. Wittenauer was here, going to thresh here tomorrow. Transfer in paper of Barney Kaiser to Joe Kaiser. We received the books for pinic [sic] at Red Bud from Fr. Spors. Henry Grossman 62 & Clara Keim 18 of Floraville were married last Sun. in St. Louis, dance in eve. at Keimes. Lightening last Sat. nite; stroke several places at Waterloo Hermans. Country Club; Johanning had 3 cows killed. Bill Weitkamp & Vivian Ripley beauty operator of Waterloo were married last Sat. in St. Louis. Some W.P.A. workers are back on job & others of [sic – off] for good; they had dynamite laid for quarry here by Hecker if they started in working, they would blow things up, so they didn’t work. We went to Leo’s awhile this eve; threshing at M. Mueth.

Bert finished cleaning upstairs. Baked cake etc. Pap took lime dust spreader home out to Henrys with team & wagon, was going to help him spread but he wasn’t ready to start yet. Transfers in Waterloo paper Homringhausen Bro. to Chr. [unclear] Buehler. Going to be a free wedding dance at Log Cabin & one at MidWay Inn tomorrow nite; don’t know who is getting married. Went to Leo’s this eve. cut lawn etc. Leo took his dad home.

Raining a little. Bert [Bertille] planted house flowers, from the basement out, cut lawn etc; planted 48 sweet potatoe [sic] plants out. Roy Staufenbiel has sore foot, horse stoped [sic] on it, bruised pretty bad. Lester Gregson’s boy, Virgil has diptheria, sign up. Lester stays by Emil, he don’t go in the house. John Kessler from Alba. is here, going to start farming at Kesslers. The Mueth property that was sold last week, or rather Euler ground brought $5.50 acre, bought by Phi Mueth. Hy. Koerber stoped [sic] on business, for Uncle Fred; till about 10:30 eve.

April Fools. Pap went in woods finished hauling wood. Bert [Bertille] cleaned bedroom, & hall etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, were at Belleville brought a curtain stretcher along for me [Bertille]. Transfer in Waterloo paper of Dav. & Joe. Donahue to Bill Donahue. Huber McDermott is selling the furniture etc. of Catherine McDermott at Log Cabin on 16 Apr.

Had nice shower today. Waterloo paper states there were no marriage licenses there, not in Belleville & E. St. Louis since the law to have a physical ex. [exam] of both parties; in Mo. 64 licenses, were it is no law for that. Mr. Ray Paulter cashier in First National Bank & lady of St. Louis were married there July 6. in Holy Innocents Church, attended by S. I. Paulter brother & Esther McCarthy friend of the bride, going for honeymoon to Chicago & Wisconsin; will make there home in Waterloo, she was employed as cashier in St. Louis First National Bank; also the wedding of Clarence Stehl Anna Cohran of Granite City, took place in Immaul [sic] Church June 30; young couple will make there home in Granite City. Emil is appointed Admin. settle the estate of Uncle Adam on Aug. 22, it is in paper. Peter Sensel purchased the Ben Jung residence, & will move to Waterloo in near future Levi is to get married; transfer was made, also of Bruno Winkler & wf. to Arch. Wiehl & wf. & Elmer Winkler sold his residence on Morrison Ave. to Bucher manager of Monroe Service Co; & is now building a house in next lot to it; on Morrison Ave. Send Chev. Ins. of $5.60. Mr. Hill was here collected telephone dues $1. Bert painted front porch benches. Awful warm after rain. Mrs. A. Brown & daughter Marcella & Mrs. Hy. Doyle have taken over the Log Cabin, formerly run by Leo Horrel who is now at Gregsons Restaurant in Red Bud; she will have an opening dance tomorrow nite. Frank Finnerty of Waterloo has or is prop. now at Oak Grove; Nic Joseph is back at Burksville again. Leabig [?] the fisherman of Boxtown that shot Joe McCarthy was giving a hearing before Justice of Peace, bound over to Grand Jury fixed at $7,500, not being able to furnish bond was returned to Co. Jail, held on charge of intended murder; a peace warrant for $1,000 has been sworn out against the prisoner; paper says.

Went to Belleville, pap got his teeth again, ain’t much better so far. Another beautiful day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. We got 132 chicks, from 12 hens. Clarence Braun’s have baby girl born Wed. at Belleville hospital. Mrs. Adam Eckert sold her house in town here to Adam Eckert, transfer in paper. We have 2 ducks, 1 egg didn’t hatch & the another 1 is broken. Set 5 more.

The soap got nice. Bert finished cleaning upstairs, all but washing curtains yet. Pap took dinner along went out in woods with wagon. Sewed some more lettuce, radish & tomatoe [sic] seed, the garden is rather wet. Some guys here from Valmeyer looking for old iron. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he bought ½ bu. timothy seed 10¢ lb. Mertz has a new electric refrigator [sic] in store, its a dandy. Wheat $1.40. Mrs. Caroline Deueker sold some ground to Geo. Erle seen in paper. also Dr. Pautler bought Kropp land & Chas. Lenhardt place that was sold public auction last Sat. brought $4,986 – 100 acres by Geo. Biffar. Leo & Rose & Mr. Orlet came this evening, also Henry & family. Mertz gave Leo a dripolator for wedding present, its nice; 8 cup size.

Bert cleaned, pap went to Red Bud to see Hartmann. This afternoon hauled a load wood in basement. Mr. Davies was here yesterday, wanted to trade; he took 2 doz. eggs along 19¢. Seen in Times that Joe Freund had auto accident last Sun. morn, near Booster Station, says he was crowded of the slab, car turned over landing on radiator, & quite a bit damage to the car, but he only has a few scratches. Transfer of Owen J. Fahey & wife to Ed. Fahey & then again Ed. Fahey to Amie, his mother. Tipton presents “Taming of Tuffy” tonite there. Leo & Rosalia & Jake came this eve. played pinochle about 6 games.
