Pap went out & helped Henry bring his mares up; brought 1 along to leave here, so he could plow a few patches. Pap went to Dr. A. Wagner’s sale this afternoon, selling all things. Congratulations was heard on the radio, german band for Arthur Mehrmann by sisters & brothers of Floraville, & for Mary Wagner of Belleville by Bernice, Charles & Melvin Wagner of Hecker. Sam Mosio has a free dance & fish fry, tonite music by Webers Bros. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here, he is hauling rock again & she stayed here. Mamie Eichenseer came down awhile. Manier has fish fry.

Cloudy this morning, but is nice again. Rose finished her dresses, & we cleaned front room, washed windows put on screens, cut lawn for the first time. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon, planted out cabbage plants etc. Primary Election today, we didn’t go to vote. Pap & Henry hauled wood all day. A fellow from Belleville looked at the oats, but didn’t take any Boul was his name, Henry bought a pig from him for $9. Henry Hepp was here wanted to borrow lime dust spreader; going to get it tomorrow. Hy. Feurer was here wanted to know if Pabst rented the ground again, if not he take it. Arlene Klotz daughter of Gus Klotz was taken to Belleville Hospital this morning, & was operated on appendix at 11:30, she is sick since Sat. evening, had no bowels moving since; Uncle Fred got a letter from Baldwin saying they should get there gas engine what they bought at her sale, & they wasn’t even at the sale of Mrs. Muench on Mar. 21 last. They have ball games on radio every day.

Pap went out to haul wood again this morning. Lot of news on the radio of Hauptmann; & flood all over in Southern State & a tornado passed through Georgia & South Carolina, quite a few injured, & killed, 1000 are homeless, houses blewn [sic] to pieces. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came he went in the woods to get rock. R. Zipfel of Red Bud brought us our chicks – 305 – 280 @ 9.25 – $25.90 & 25 that pap won as attendance prize; we got 75 lbs. slartine [unclear – possibly starting] a mash along free, 25 lbs. with every 100 chicks; there all pretty nice White Rocks. Joe Griffin came & put us a new A. battery radio for half price $1.50, it works pretty good now, Steve Rennecker was here, collecting telephone dues. Eggs are only 15¢ now here; 16¢ on radio this morn.

Boy! some weather, cold, freezing hard is to be 20° tonite, we covered things in the garden; started fire in furnace again & in brooder stove, getting chicxs [sic] Sat. Mr. Jake Erle stopped in. Salger from Horse Prairie came, looked at our cultivator & bought it for $35.00; will get it soon. Berti went to see Joe Griffin about our radio; he is coming down tomorrow; we sewed aprons, caps & Rose cut her print dress & sewed the skirt.

Pap got crushing done, & got hair cut. Henry came up got yeast, & brought a pr. [pair of] Billy [Willis] shoes to be exchanged. We went to Belleville this afternoon, went to church. Joe Griffin came & looked at our radio, repaired it, works fine now. Henry & family came this evening got the shoes again. Warm today.

Rain this morning. We got radio now, Joe Griffin fixed it. We bought apples from a guy from Muryphsboro [sic] this morn. Pap went out in the woods, stopped to see Uncle Adam first, he is pretty good. Berti got 16¢ for eggs. Thunder, lighten [lightning] & rain this evening.

Nice day, Rose has a swollen cheek, but doesn’t hurt & don’t get any larger, guess it is the mumps. Uncle Fred went to Waterloo to get his car fixed, she stayed here, her & Bertie went to see Wm. Birkner’s, & to Minnie Staufenbiel. Joe Griffin came looked at the radio, the B. batteries are shot, & A. is good, he put in new ones, going to take the others to Belleville, get them looked after. Uncle Adam rested pretty good last nite pap came home at 5:30, him & Emil stayed up all nite; Josie went home, Clara is coming this morning again. Josie has a sore leg. Rob. Lauts family was here this evening; had radio.

Beautiful day, we wore spring hats, & coats. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped a short while, after church, she wanted to get the Sun. paper, but Mertz had no more there. Mrs. Jerome Cortner was taken to Belleville hospital in an ambulance last nite; she got a hemmorhage [sic], took the baby to Nic Cortners, they had been visiting Ben Neffs she felt sick, & went home at 8 o clock, not long after took her to the hospital, she worked hard yesterday yet. Olive Laut came got 1 lb. butter, there going to plant potatoes out at Boll’s today. Omer Schilling brought our clover seed, this afternoon. We went to Foster Pond to see a certain party, then went to see Davis, to Belleville, looked at cows. Rose went to Joe Griffin’s to see about radio batteries.

Pap sewed clover seed down below in Hy Armstutz oats patch, then went to help Henry sew again. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up, planted 7 rows potatoes. We went out & listened to there radio tonite. Mrs. Bill Rahn Red Bud died of fractured skull, they said Emett Cowell took her to Columbia, & she fell from the car, door flew open, going 30 miles, happened last Mon. some time; we had heard it on the radio, that she was hurt. Ivo Buehler is 18 yrs. old today. Ligntening [sic] & cloudy weather.

Cold wind; Bernice brought the mail. We painted the screen window frames, in basement, all for downstairs so far, all finished; this afternoon cleaned chicken houses, put in clean straw. We get 5½ doz. eggs; now & there only 16¢ today. The radio batteries is about done can’t hear nothing, papa didn’t go out to Henry’s today, to windy to sew oats.
