Went to mass; took quite awhile had to read a letter from Bischof [sic – Bishop], & read yearly account. Leo & family came took us along to Uncle Freds, had dinner & supper. Bill [Klein] also came in afternoon, took us home. Went to Belleville to play given by St. Mary’s players; Name “Busy Honeymoon.” Steve Orlet was also in it; directed by Fr. Ratterman, & musci [sic] by St. Mary Choir & Glee Club & children was good. Steve Rennecker came here, Gus Edler was out & left money there by him for Uncle Fred. Mrs. Frank Birkner is pretty ill with flu, they don’t let no one in to see her, pretty weak. Named there baby Marlene – Maggie Schaefer & Ben Schilling were the sponsors. Beautiful day warm.
Saturday, Jan. 21, 1939
Pap went up to mass of Mary Grossheim funeral, pretty large, pallbearers were Gus Kabureck & son, Fred Neff, Con. Mueth, Jake Schaefer & Henry & one pap didn’t know. Frs. Orlet & Fr. Ratermann assisted Fr. Aydt; Mary wanted that way; Fr. Aydt made a very nice sermon, praised her. she was awful generous towards the parish, she bought & donated The Mother of Perpetual Help Statue. Josie Keller came out bout 11 o’clock had dinner here, called Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary to come up, played cards all afternoon & part of eve. All had supper here, she brought a cake out for A. [Aunt] Marys birthday celebrating it today. Hecker general telephone meeting brought a quite a few people to town this afternoon to elect officers & operator. Lizzie Boll received it again against Geo. Wagner 14 – Rapp 5. Lizzie got 23 votes.

Cold this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came took Bert along to New Athens to see the quilt show, about 68 quilts are on display. We worked in the garden, made paths & spaded a piece. Aunt Mary stitched quilt is sold $7.50. to a party from St. Louis; there is so many pretty quilts present. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening. Bert went along to church service with her, Fr. Rattermann has the sermon.

Beautiful day. Pap hauled 2 loads wood. Frisch came & got 17 bus. 17 lbs. oats @ 60¢, that is all we are going to sale for awhile. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he went to L. Birkners, she helped quilt all afternoon, had supper here, she went to church this eve. Fr. Rattermann has the services on Wed. nite. Leo & Rose came down this eve.; she helped quilt. Geo Orlets girl Cecilia was rushed to the Belleville hospital Sun. was operated within half hr. time, had appendix; she isn’t so good wouldn’t let no one in yesterday. Mr. Orlet is out at Leo’s now, helping with the work; last nite Martin Karban, Geo & Emil Helfrich, Jake’s family & Mr. & Mrs. Orlet & Isidore, were all by them; played card; Mr. Orlet stayed out.

Cleaned; baked bread. Papa went to town, bought things for tomorrow, 10¾ lbs. beef 20¢. etc, cabbage, celery & things for salad. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came had supper here & helped line things up. Lizzie Boll helped also. Leo, Isd. & Rose & Bert & Mrs. Orlet went to Belleville, shopping & by Fr. Orlet; Instructions & confession by Fr. Rattermann. Very Beautiful day.
