Nice day, little cloudy. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Jake Neff has small pox, put sign up today. We went to see Leo’s this afternoon, has supper there, Marita still has a little cold yet; quite a few people are still being vaccinated all around here. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to St. Louis to Audoritium [sic] to see Hill Billy Show, & it was good, seats were all filled 12, 000 then were so many standing.

Cloudy again today. We cleaned chicken house; painted chairs for Marita, had piegeon [sic] for supper. The Christmas card I send to Ed. McDermott at Washington D.C. came back unclaimed, it sure is funny it came back. Klotz’s family & Wagner’s family all got vaccinated for small pox.
Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1939
Washed, ironed, pap cleaned barn, nice day, warm again, it is past spring weather, & an awful lot of sickness, paper has so many dieing [sic] of pneumonia. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, put there meat sugar cured here, she said Probsts family all got vacinated [sic] for small pox & some more from town are going to get vacinated [sic] yet, no cases here. Red Bud schools are all closed; only Ganley’s & Grabs had it around here.
