Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed patched, cleaned front room. Windy & cloudy today. We got chicks for hogs from Strecks got $6.95 top $7.10, Mr. Englerth 83 is being buried this morn. at Smithton church & cemetery. Bill [Klein] is pall bearer all grand children to carry him. Leo & family came brought molasses, lard, eggs, to sell.

Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came this afternoon, to get car & Marita. We went to Smithton church this afternoon & rained heavy mostly all day & nite, getting colder.
Monday, Sept. 5, 1938
Labor Day. Took trip this afternoon, went to Walsh & through New Athens home, stopped at Smithton church pinic [sic], wasn’t much doing. Went to Paderborn Totsch’s Dominic Roth 28 & Annie Mueth 33. wedding dance, John Mueth & Olivia Roth the attendants; big crowd & lots of presents. Fahey twins won a prize at Red Bud pinic [sic] today, being the oldest twins there; & Clara Heck nee Hess, there being born last week. 3 lb. each one at the hospital incubator; doing fine, have to be there for 5 weeks.

Papa got hair cut; him & Rosalia went out to Henry’s got a load oats. Baked Oatmeal cookies & pie this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, we all went to Red Bud to Mass. Jake Mauer’s sale, large attendance, papa bought rope & things, it was late till they started the household goods, we left afterwards. Buel Rascow was sale cryer, & John Schumacher, clerk; Mrs. Mauer is going to move to the city & her 2 daughters that are not married, will live with her, Bertha & Stella; everything brought a fair prize for bring cash sale. Mrs. Lizze Peiffer, 53 yrs. of age died last Tues. evening & buried this afternoon at Millstadt Cemetery she was Lizzie Hollerbach; married Chas. Peiffer, have 1 son & 2 daughters. Mr. Elmer Rittmeyer 32 & Miss Edna Rieso 19 are being married at Smithon [sic] Church by Rev. Hoste [? – unclear] at 3 oclock, wearing white dress & veil. Mr. Al Rittmeyer & Alice Mantle are the attendants & Miss Mabel Rieso Maid of honor & Aaron Papenberg groomsmen; one wearing peach, & the other green, with slippers to match; they will live in St. Louis, where the groom is employed, a private reception is held in Daabs Club house this evening for, invited several hundred guests. Santa Claus was in Hecker, Mertz store from 3 o clocks on.

Went out to Uncle Freds had dinner there, then left the car stand by church lanes & walked down the hard road to where they are working by Cleveland’s House, we walked up to Henry’s but no one home there, so went back home again, it started in raining. Harry Kammler has a dance tonite musci [sic] furnished by Mac Ocr. [sic] of Red Bud. Ed Neff traded his old car in for a new one, also Joe Wacthel, R. Stauenfbiel. Ed is building a new garage, wrecked his old one, & putting it up modern. Mr. Peter Reheis got the place from Ralph Collier, known as Whiteside farm, sold on forclosure [sic] sale $7500.00. Mrs. Collier & children are in St. Louis. Mr. Jo. Neff 45 yrs. passed away was buried Fri., sick 2 days in hospital. Mrs. Joe Schilling brother, Smithon [sic] Church, Green Mount Cemetery. Mrs. Neff 86 yrs, his mother lives in Old Folds [sic – Folks] Home, Belleville; he married Lavin Buehler, and have 3 children, all living on farm near Smithon [sic].
