Thursday, Jan. 8, 1931

Papa went to church this morning & then he went down to see Jos. Braun a little while.  We washed & ironed today, baked bread.  This afternoon Mamie called up  & wanted to know if any of us were going to the quilting in the School Hall.  We didn’t know anything of it at all so Rosalia went up to Mamie’s & then they went.  There is Trustee meeting over at Elmer Kammler’s this afternoon.  This morning the ground was all covered with snow, but it is so warm today, that the snow is all most gone already.  This evening Papa went down to the telephone meeting at George Kammler’s & Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie’s & played pinochle.  Angela & Bertille were partners & Mamie & Rosalia, we played 2 games & each won one.  Greg. McCarthy went to a show with Ralph Wiegand.  Odillo went over to Ed. Neff’s & the 2 Schilling’s boys too, they had a game of pinochle there.  At the telephone meeting they elected the old officers again, & the next meeting will be in April at our place.

Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1930

We all went to Belleville this morning & sold 16 doz. eggs for .35¢, $5.60.  Papa went in the woods this afternoon & also stopped in at Henry’s & brought the thread in for her, what we brought along from Belleville.  Rosalia is fixing up the doll & stuffed it.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here this evening & then we all went up in the School Hall & there Oh! what a time, it was a dance.  Isadore Helfrich went home & got his accordion & then Uncle Fred Roy Staufenbiel furnished music.  There were a few outsiders there.  Papa bought a cake.  Uncle Fred got 2 cakes.  The dance was over about 11 o’clock.

Thursday, Dec. 18, 1930

Looks like snow this morning.  It started snowing & kept up all day.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville this morning & left the kids here.  They were back again for dinner.  We baked delicious cookies this morning.  Harold & Virgil Eichenseer were here this evening and brought us a letter for an invitation for a play in St. Augustine’s Hall next Tues. afternoon given by the school children, admission fee says 11¢ in this letter.  We got a Christmas card today from Creses Freund.

Saturday, Oct. 25, 1930

Today is Jake Reheis’s wife’s birthday.  They are going to celebrate by having a dance in Breezy’s Hill.  Today Gambach is to start his sale.  This evening Rosalia and Bertille went up & took Mamie along & then we went to the Republican meeting in the church hall, or in the new school hall.  Archie Weihl & A.C. Bollinger, A.H. Friedichs & Meader from Columbia were the main speakers & Luis Weihl was chairman.  Free sandwiches and soda water were had & gumo (?) for the ladies from Casey Leep, blotters from Louis H. Zimmer.

Friday, Oct. 24, 1930

Bertille was at church this morning.  The Catholic School children didn’t have no school all this week, because the furnace isn’t fixed yet.  They took Mrs. Lutz to the hospital this morning, she is in a pretty bad condition, she is swollen up so bad she can’t hardly breathe they say.  Mr. Zimmer the candidate for School Superintendent was here this morning.  The Monroe Co. farmers Institue is going to be held at Columbia this year.  This evening the bell of the Evangelical church tolled 58 strokes for the death of Mrs. Lutz, she died at 3:30 this afternoon.  They was to operate on her, but she was too weak, when they brought her to the hospital.

Monday, Oct. 20, 1930

We washed this morning.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville & also to the coal mines & got a load of coal for the church.  They left the kids here, they came back about 4 o’clock, they left at 10am this morning, but they had to wait so long to get a load of coal.  Sister Several call up this morning and wanted to know if Papa would go to Red Bud this morning & get a school desk for the sister, so he did, this afternoon he went to get a load of coal for the church, but there were so many trucks waiting at the coal mine that he went over to Freeburg’s coal mine & there he got 19 bu. 70 lbs. for $1.56.  Rosalia took 8 doz. eggs to the store & got .26¢.  The Catholic School children didn’t have no school today, because it was to cold & the furnace isn’t fixed yet in the new school house, & it is to cold with out fire.

Sunday, Oct. 19, 1930

We had our first snow this morning for this year.  Today is shooting matches all over, George Boll’s, Martin Doyl’s, Mike McCarthy’s.  There is also a picnic in Smithton fish fry and dance tonight.  Henry and family were all here for dinner today.  We had roast beef.  Tonight Rosalia & Bertille went to the picture show in the new school hall, the name of the show was “Noah’s Ark” in 10 reels.  There was a good crowd there.  Admission was 10 and 25¢.

Wednesday, August 27, 1930

Rosalia went up to clean school today.  Papa is cutting corn.  Tonight is a dance at Weigands in the brick house.  Milton Wagner & Henry Hillischeim is giving it.   Milton & Lester Bruns stopped here last night when they went home from work and he invited us to come.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening and we all went down to the dance.  Karl Boll furnished music.  There were quite a few women cleaning the school today.  Leona & Frances Schilling came up together.  She left the kids here with me.  Papa is cutting corn this afternoon again.

Friday, August 22, 1930

Papa, Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Rosalia went up to help clean things again.  Hecker played ball with Waterloo Sunday.  Hecker won.  There is a big piece in the paper about the dedication of the new school.  There were 40 priests here and 12 sisters.  Gusta Dudenhoeffer and some people came she came with from St. Louis were out, they were down at the house a little while.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here for dinner.

Friday, July 25, 1930

Today is Peter Melhauser’s sale by Burksville, Ill.  Papa thought he was going.  Today is also Clarence Pabsts birthday.  The way they say there is a bunch going to surprise him tonight.  Uncle Fred helped at the school today and Aunt Mary was here all day.  Uncle Fred came down here for dinner then afterwards Papa went along up & worked at the school too all afternoon.  We went out to Henry’s this morning.  Rosalia & Bertille got a hair cut.  We took some plums along too for jelly.  This evening Wm. C. Heyl came & wanted his money for lime dust.  Papa paid him $117.65 by check.  Mamie & Clarence Eichenseer was down a little while this evening.  Mamie said there was a big bunch went down to Clarence Pabst birthday.  He is 22 years old today.
