Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville with things eggs 32 [cents]; they left Marita here went home did there work & came back for supper. Bill [Klein] came this eve, played cards. Leo is going to trade his Ford for truck ford V8 from Bill soon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in going to euchre at Waterloo. Bert [Bertille] gave her 25 [cents] to play for her; also one at Broad Hollow Grange.

Washed. Pap went to Farmers meeting at school hall with H. Wittenauer this morn. & afternoon with Henry. Ford agent of Waterloo stopped in, thought maybe we want to trade Whip for Model A. Ford he has there now. A fellow & Pierre Laut around selling magzaine [sic] don’t want any. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in were over at New Athens took a quilt over for show next month. Leona isn’t feeling well up & down has it like Uncle Fred in gall [bladder]; eating to much pork.

Cloudy. We went to Red Bud to Ford Dealer & Chev. & there we got 1938 Chev. Coupe with heater & froster, 6 sets chains for $580 & old Chev. 1926 model $164.00. Black coupe pretty good trade. We canned 2 qts pickles & tomatoes; fixed garage for new car. Kleins got about 2 [cents] bu. for our onions & 50 [cents] bu. potatoes. last Thurs. at St. Louis. Bill [Klein] started working there today in store. Jac. Erle was here to Ins. [insure] car; also Ms. Becker, we insured with Becker for liability & property damage $16.65 yr. Henry & family came brought potatoes, quite a few bushels, & nice ones they got this year. Emil came over to look at the car; same as Uncle Fred’s.

Nice day. Henry & family came yesterday afternoon boys stayed here & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, got new dress & things. Geo. Walzbacher’s only child girl Mary Elizabeth 4 yrs. old died at St. Marys Hospital brief illness says in paper. Mr. Joe Rieckert celebrated his 98th birthday on July 9. still hole & hearty, still pratices [sic] law yet. Walter Nobbe & Al Hoffmann were here, trying to trade cars again, now he offers $150. for chev. but we won’t trade yet with him, wait longer. Harry Wittenauer came going to thresh oats here by tomorrow.

Pap went to Red Bud to the funeral of Mrs. Cowell 81 yrs. to be buried in Hecker cemetery. Mrs. Rapp’s mother. Bert [Bertille] canned 2 qt. peaches. Schriebers was here twice trying to trade cars, he would give $164. for Chev. on a new 1938, & we could keep Whip. We went to Millsdadt [sic – Millstadt] this afternoon.

Pap came to Leo’s threshing had them for lunch this morn; he got 391 bus. We stayed for dinner, washed etc. yet. John Horn came out with a Plymouth, trying to trade cars, coming again. We dug about 2 bus. potatoes. Bill [Klein] came down took 2 bus. along late to St. Louis. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came this eve. going to thresh oats tomorrow some time. Feurer threshed brought the 3rd; he threshed 204 bus. out our ground, we got 68 bus. Sure hot these days; no rain, everything drying up.

We all went out butchering at Henry’s, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Emil helped, a pretty big one he killed, to sell tomorrow again. Bertille went to town, got a money order to Chicago Mail Order for shoes for Aunt Mary. Blackburn have a different car, chev. coach, Storall’s a Deluxe Delivery. Elmer Kammler has Harry’s, he got a second hand Chev. Clem Parker has Geo Kuhns ford coupe; & several others got others.
