Rained a little. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came from Belleville have brought truck back took Marita along home had dinner here, beef roast. Bert [Bertille] dug up flowers this afternoon. Lester Tobin & girl friend were here, he wanted to see heifers & etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve; they were at New Athens pinic [sic] yesterday, won pair pillow cases. Henry brought load corn & Billy [Willis] was also along; brought sample apple butter. Billy took flowers along to plant.

Went to Belleville, got 27 [cents] for eggs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were also in, we helped them sell some pears etc.
Monday, Oct. 2, 1939
Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed, patched. Pap went to Waterloo took radio in to Bersche’s got 1 new tube put in, its better, but doesn’t work right; he went out on business trip this afternoon. Mr. Edler came on business for Uncle Fred. Arch Bischoff [sic – Bishop] Cardinal Mudenlin [sic – Mundelein] was found dead in bed this morn. at 7:30. Some people here selling apples 65 [cents] bu. come from Muryphsboro. Warmer today.

Went to mass. Leo & family came. Leo went to church here, then we went out to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. Mrs. Armstutz & Fred & his wife came out to. Josie Keller’s brother Fred were here, stopped in had supper here; has a new Oldsmobile, sedan; was a demenostrater [sic?]. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went out with plymouth this eve. Our radio isn’t working.

Went to Belleville with things, all sold but 2 pumpkins. Uncle Fred working up here this morn; brought bucket of peas this afternoon she [Aunt Mary] came along up. We got 25 [cents] for eggs today. Frank Kroll’s have baby girl born Sat. eve. & Dominic Roth girl Sun. at Belleville Hospital. Reports are that Aaron Papenberg is going to build a house, on Kessler’s ground next to Kammler. Hy. Fereuer brought the 3rd of potatoes this eve. 15 bus. The war business is still going strong. Warsaw is nearly cleaned out, paper says, half burning, churches were bombed Sun. during services.
Saturday, Sept. 23, 1939
Nice day. Pap went out to Henry’s got few sacks of rye; took tomatoes along out for catsup. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, we all went to Manier’s sale at Griffins; brought good price, Huber Auct., & quite crowd, we bought nothing. A. [Aunt] Mary got buffet for 65 [cents] other things. 3 pc Davenette set $4.25 Chris Buehler bought. Helleshein, lot things & victrola for $1.25. Piano. Hugo Probst. $8. for Firemen’s. Ralph Ettling came on business this eve. pd. Int. $100. on note.
Friday, Sept. 22, 1939
Nice cool day. Bert [Bertille] cleaned 2 rooms upstairs. Pap took chev. to Red Bud get oil changed. 5048 mi. this afternoon. Seen in paper, some thieves were around Waterloo on S. Market & Morrison Ave. took money from Wedel home & some others. Chris Buehlers celebrating their Silver Wedd. today 25 yrs. giving a free dance at Log Cabin tonite, musci [sic] by Irene, Wilma & Oliver Birkner & Dilbert Mueth; have posters up. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in on there way down. Bill [Klein] came this eve. On Sept. 11 Lester Gregsons 10th Wedd Ann.

Hot again. Went to Henrys, took a load of wheat to Waterloo – 18 bus. got 67 [cents]. Top price is 82 [cents] today. Wheat is getting hot again, took load of ours from here off got 73 [cents] & took another load from out there 67 [cents]. Henry & family, Leo & family & Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were all here this eve – eating watermelon had 40 lb. melon; & it was sure good.
