Went to Smithton to 7 o’clock mass; to see Ed. Heap; went to Leo’s & Rose [Rosalia] from there, had dinner there. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came there this afternoon, & Henry & family at night. We went to Con. Myerscough at Ruma, this afternoon; stopped in at Bill Vogts. Hecker baseball club have a dance at Pautler tonite; musci [sic] by Keims Trio. Ben Schilling is in with them. had pretty fair crowd cleared $40.00. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. & Geo. Wagner awhile. Tony Helfrich wrecked his car last nite by Floraville, nearly got in the pond; smashed up.

Cold this morn. but beautiful this afternoon, 60 [degrees]. Leo came, twice, went to doctor for cough medicine for Rosalia, she has an awful bad cough; he wasn’t home this morn. when he was down, had to come again at noon; was at Monroe Probsts, who has also pretty bad cold. Bill Vogt stopped in looked at our pigs. Here at Hecker church they have lenten devotion on Wed. eve. & Fri. afternoon.

Patched & quilted. Pap went over to Emil’s went along with him to Ed. Heap’s sale at Smithton, lot of people there but things didn’t sell; Bill Vogt had some pigs there to, but took them back home again; Vogt bought them back.
Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1937
Washed, ironed, canned peaches. A man here collecting for poor people. Mr. James Tobin & Leona Vogt getting married this morn. at Red Bud 8:30 high mass; dance at Oak Grove tonite, only daughter of Bill Vogt. South of Red Bud. Catholics here have card & lawn party tonite at School grounds. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, we all went to social, didn’t win nothing; Uncle had 7 got dresser scarf; played 12 games & couple games of each bingo, had cake walk, 15 cakes @ $1.25. Uncle Fred had to play accordion for cake walk; not much of crowd about 8 tables euchre, 1 pinochle, 1 solo. Mrs. Emmet Cowell while on her way to attend the wedding Mass this morn. was struck by auto. Leifer of south Red Bud, she also had with her a girl, who was also hit, had few teeth knocked out, & Mrs. has leg broken, side all bruised, were car had drug her about 30 ft. they say; is in Red Bud hospital, hurt pretty bad.

Pap went out to Henry’s helped saw logs in the woods, & haul them to Schilling’s; had dinner at Henry’s. Bert baked pie etc., we got lot of milk, about 1 gal. to a milking. Uncle Fred & A. Mary were up working this afternoon; & came back again this eve. Bert [Bertille] went along to Red Bud to Catholic euchre. Uncle got pr. house slippers, had 8 points & played paps card, he got dresser scarf. Bert had 7 got rug. A. Mary 3 points; quite a few prizes & nice crowd pillow slips attendance prize by Mrs. Ed. Vogt. Fr. Stern is very low, but he said they should have the euchre; he talks yet but is very weak; pap stop to see him last Mon; he knew him right away. A man here looked at cow; to high for him. Bert Thompson send him here.

Pap went to Red Bud; to Wm. Vogt bought a sow 165 lbs. @ 12¢ – to have pigs in a week, he delivered here. Henry came, went to Belleville & got the rest, brought Floyd home, he looks pale, hand all tied up, have to bring him back next Thurs. Mrs. Pete Matzenbacher is in the hospital at St. Louis, for cancer.

Last day of the year. Pap & Berti went to Waterloo this morning, got egg mash, went to see Bershe & Ziebold’s Radios. Mr. Jerome Vogt came, counted our pigs & pap had to sign contracts. Papa went to Chris Buehler’s this afternoon, he bought 3 heifers $42 from him. An egg peddler Moll stopped looked at our cows, the one is sold, he might come back again later on, but the time the other one will have a calf. Mr. Streck came out & looked the cattle over, but didn’t buy.

Election today, just 2 commissioners running, Vogt & Teonjes. Bertille’s 21 yr. birthday. We washed, hung it in basement. Chris Buehler stopped in, to tell papa about some hogs. Chas. Wagner came with some corn for his hogs here, Geo. Lorberg was going to get them this afternoon, & he did. Geo Boll was also along, they had taken stock to East St. Louis, then went to J. Friedrichs, had bought a heifer & brought a cow along for A. Eckert. Painted a few window frames this afternoon. A Wind Power Electric Agent was here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening, called for Christ Kern’s to came here also, wanted to speak with them, so Mr & Mrs Kern & boy Leo came. We started fire in furnace for first time this year.

Rain all morning. Yesterday was Mr. Mrs. Joe Neary’s 1st year wedding anniversary. Ida Braun 2 yrs. dead. Bill Vogt & man was here, they went to Blackburn’s, delivered a hog, then went up to Henry’s & looked at the mares. Werner & guy from over by New Athens was here, looking for a drill & other tools, but ours was already sold. Papa was by Renneckers awhile, she gave him some flower slips for us to plant out. Eggs 24¢ today.

Hy Volkmann gave us a visit this morning. We went to Foster Pond, to R Vogts sale, bought nothing, horse brought $115.00 etc., little calf $18.00, implements went cheap, it was all cash sale. We stopped at Waterloo got a beef bone for soup.
