Raining this morn; for about 1 hr. then after wards, nice sunshine day. Emil was over awhile this morn. We went to mass. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down for dinner & supper. Cleveland’s family were here this evening, playing solo. Bert [Bertille] went to Wagner’s along with them to Floraville Masquerade Ball, Schmidts Merry Makers musci [sic]. Prizes were won 1st group, 4 girls, Norma Etling; Edna Probst, Elvira Kroft, M. Keim. 2nd prize, dressed a best gent. Mrs. Walter Vogel & Erma Fisher lady. 3rd. Ruth Specinger. 4th. Walter Vogel comic n****r, big crowd; case beer attendance prize. Mueth had an accident this afternoon, at Columbia & Milsdadt [sic] road, car all smashed Phil. & Eddy, Phil wife; they say were hurt bad; Josie had scratches to; but they took her home, but the rest are at St. Mary’s hospital, they were on there way to St. Louis to see Rosie, who was operated on is in hospital; Phil had fractured skull & Ed rib broken. Louis Hofmeister of New Athens fell asleep tonite & ran of left side of hard road up the bank by Al. Parker’s on New Athens hard road; he wasn’t hurt, but car was damaged quite a bit; they say $95. to repair it again.

Ground hogs day, & he didn’t see his shadow. We went to see U. [Uncle] Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, then went to Gasser’s & Stifflers on business. Bert [Bertille] ironed, patched etc. pap cleaned barn. Al. Gasser & Steve Stiffler came this eve. got the team $135.00. lead them behind the truck. We went to Geo. Wagner’s tonite; the quilt was finished, at 3:30; played 9 games pinochle.

Nice day. Pap went in wood; hauled some together, & brought load home. Bert [Bertille] washed. Went to Wagners quilting this afternoon; Mehrmann came got 6 doz. eggs @ 16 [cents]. Steve Stiffler & Al Gasser were here, looking at the horses again bought them, going to get tomorrow afternoon $135. team. The Catholics got card party in hall tonite; isn’t so cold tonite. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came; Bert [Bertille] went along up to the euchre, but none won a prize Bert [Bertille] had 7, they each 5 points. Mrs. Geo. Grossheim won attendance prize, cake cover; crowd wasn’t to large.

Pap went to Red Bud took 443 lbs. clover seed to Schrieber’s. for 8 1/2 [cents]. Melvin Wagner has the measles, got a sign up, Osies Neff’s, Weigands, Geodelle’s, Klotz’s kids all have them now. Bert [Bertille] send an order to Chicago Mail Or; one to Si & Freckles at Quincy, describing Hecker; one to Ohio to a Oxydol Advertisment [sic]. A fellow here to see about clover seed again. Myrtle Neff is pretty sick.

Pap went up in woods, came home for dinner & went up again this afternoon. Geo. Wagner came over to get eggs we didn’t have none to sell, only got 1 doz. Some people here from Smithton selling beef, didn’t buy none. Berneice brought 5 [cents] over for eggs for Mehrmann, they were 21 [cents] last week he said. Mr. & Mrs. Arch. Whiel have baby born born Jan. 10 – St. Mary Hospital, now have boy & girl. Mr. & Mrs. Frank Hoffmann of Tipton have a baby boy born Jan. 9 also at St. Mary’s Hospital; have a boy & girl now.

Rained a little today, & Boy the roads, terrible mess. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary wanted to go to Belleville, got as far as Sphalts’s land, turned around, & went home again, couldn’t make it she said. Pierre Laut came, asked for permission to go hunting on our ground. Geo. Wagner butchering today. Rennecker & Laut helping got it from Hy. Armstutz. Sure warm, but cloudy & south wind. The mail carried Schmidt has been going around the last several days, well all week, so far with the buggy & horses; some trip, & some mud. We got Christmas card from Fr. Joe Orlet Mon. Sun starting to shine.

Foggy day again. Bert [Bertille] washed. Emil came over awhile this morn. Pap & him walked up to Frank Emery’s funeral this afternoon 2 o’clock services at house; then to city cemetery, he was 63 yrs. of age. had been ruptured some time ago; Pallbearers were Vic Eichenseer, Jac. Neff, Steve Rennecker, Oscar Klotz, Adolph Lother, Bill Fritsche. Wagner boy’s came got 4 doz. eggs for Mehrmann 25 [cents] today. Mrs. Bill Kaiser was taken to hospital in ambulance yesterday, double pneumonia, for 6 days; had Dr. Frein & nurse out yesterday also. Mr. Martin Fritsche here in town also has double pneumonia; so much sickness around & real weather for it to. Miss Kate McDermott who was making her home in St. Louis past while, suffered stroke Sun. morn, was taken to Red Bud hospital, were there she died, will be buried tomorrow morn, at Tipton church & cemetery at Koch [? – unclear]. Wagner’s family came this eve; we play 7 games pinochle, ladies winning every game.

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary had breakfast & supper here going to stay over nite again, awful warm out. Went out to Henry’s butchering, had dinner. Boys got piona [sic – piano] accordion from Santa Claus for Christmas. Lena Meng was here to see Uncle Fred. Uncle Fred fixed the pump for Emil, after we came home from butchering. Frank Emery died this morn. 2 oclock is by Wagners. We played cards this eve. pinochle. Lena Meng stopped in on way town.

We went to Waterloo, pap ordered an overcoat from Priper [?- unclear] $13. Bert [Bertille] went along with Wagner’s to Floraville, to Hilda Keim’s & Horn wedding dance, at Keims hall awful large crowd. girls played musci [sic].
Saturday, Oct. 23, 1937
John Braun came talking oil leasing again. Wagner kids got ½ bu. sweet potatoes 50¢. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert went along to Floraville to Keim’s wedding dance of Clarence Keim & Lydia Doerr, attendants were Miss Keim & Horn boys Waterloo; such crowd received few presents; bride had blue dress. Henry & Billy [Willis] came, brought beef up. 55¢ for us & A. [Aunt] Mary he as roast & ours soup. 16 & 18¢ he sold it for; at Waterloo. Ed. Scheinader was the butcher. Pretty cold froze ice last nite.
